The ambassador reiterated his view on Pollard and said, "I certainly do not personally believe that Mr. Pollard should have received capital punishment- I was appalled to learn that I had given that impression."
An odd statement. It is as if he had no idea what he said. Not that there was anything outrageous in what he said, but why act shocked that anyone understood what you said?

No need to apologize; he was right on target. Pollard should never be released.
