Murtha's misstep (LA Times Editorial slams Murtha and Pelosi)
Los Angeles Times ^

Posted on 05/23/2007 2:36:44 AM PDT by Princip. Conservative

The Pennsylvania Democrat tarnishes the party's image and nearly receives a reprimand playing 'earmark' politics.

WITH DEMOCRATS like Rep. John P. Murtha of Pennsylvania, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi doesn't need Republicans. After Pelosi promised that Democrats would preside over "the most honest, the most open and the most ethical Congress," Murtha, whom Pelosi unsuccessfully pushed for majority leader, described a Democratic lobbying reform proposal as "total crap." (He graciously added, however, that he'd support the legislation because "that's what Nancy wants.")

Murtha's latest gift to Pelosi is a confrontation in which he allegedly told Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.), who had opposed one of Murtha's pet projects, that "I hope you don't have any earmarks in the defense appropriation bill because they are gone, and you will not get any earmarks now and forever." Rogers, a former FBI agent, asserted that Murtha had turned the House floor into an episode of "The Sopranos," and he filed a resolution accusing his colleague of violating House rules. On Tuesday, the resolution was tabled on a largely party-line vote, but not before Democrats were put excruciatingly on the defensive on what Pelosi has made a signature issue. Expect Republicans to continue making "Sopranos" jokes.

-- SNIP --

Unfortunately for Democrats, Murtha's confrontation with Rogers was public, as was the vote by which the complaint against the master appropriator was put on procedural ice.

It doesn't help the Democrats' image that this dispute over Murtha's comments originated in an earmark, a special-interest provision widely seen as part of the "culture of corruption" decried by Democrats in the last election.

Well, this is interesting. Sounds as if Pelosi and Murtha are showing their true colors, even to the left-wing LA Times. It'll be interesting to see where this goes.

What the liberals forget is that no one can master the art of corruption quite like a Democrat.

I am afraid what will happen is that when some Republican brings it up at election time, it will be “old news” and “everybody does it”.

I think that a key question is, is there anyone at the RNC that has the sense to file and index all these democrat shortcomings for use in the 2008 campaign. I don’t mean that they should be used in the form of a fund raising letter to their mailing list either. There is so much here that should be in paid for television/radio/dinosaur ads—Murtha, the pork laden surrender bill, the amnesty bill, Hairless Reids comments about US having lost in Iraq, the list goes on. I know that the Michigan GOP doesn’t have the sense to use stuff pertinent to our state, I suspect the RNC doesn’t either. I’m getting ready for the wilderness.

You are correct. The way to avoid the ‘old news’ scenario is to play like the Dems - send the Repub version of Chuckie Schumer to the microphones EVERY DAY and hammer away on this issue until the Dems decide Murtha is a liability and has to go.

I knew when I first read this that the Democrats would find a way to avoid any repercussions for Murtha. So, they tabled it ,huh? Dosnt tabling mean they can bring it up later?? Thats exactly what the republicans should do. Bring it up again the next time old Murtha steps in it,and he will.

Democrats cried about Republican antics, The Republicans were pikers compare to this bunch, and another thing Murtha’s promise will still be carried out Mike Rogers wont be getting any earmarks. The Dems know how to hide these things ,Murtha just let his big stupid mouth run and got caught.

The LA Times is losing circulation share these days at the same rate as a fire hose.

They are probably trying a little "outreach" to everyone who is an ultra liberal in the hopes that someone will read their rag.

Well, with all of the hot air I would go with explosive gas emissions as the cause of the stain.
He might need carbon drawers instead of carbon credits.

If Murtha gets into serious trouble, the Republicans will rally around him and bail him out. It’s what they do.

Is it surprising that the LA Times attacked the Democrats in Congress one day after the Democrats caved over the Iraq funding. This article is meant to send a message.

Time to update the symbols. Donkeys and elephants ought to be replaced by coyotes and turkeys. Except a coyote has more shame than a Dem, and a turkey is less self-defeating than a Republican.

Cleaning, with Nancy

Pelosi was flapping her gums,
While her face hinted she needed Tums.
She longed to clean House,
To squash-dead each louse
Alas! She’s learned Libs are the bums.

I think if Americans can be drug/alcohol tested in their everyday jobs then so should members of Congress & the Senate. I also think that after a certain age the members that show signs of dementia ought to be tested for that too. Maybe we could rid ourselves of some of these people who act so crazy.

Whose morals were greatly in dearth-a.
As committee’s main host-a
He runs Casa Nostra.
He shouldn’t hold power no furtha.

It will never happen...there is an unwritten rule about prosecuting one of your own, since both parties may get caught violating a rule or two. Therefore, a prosecution or other punishment only occurs when you have stepped on enough peoples' toes...example is that guy from Illinois that went to prison (I cannot recall his name).

The Soprano jokes are funny because there is so much truth in them. I see the Dem presidential primaries as a rivalry between two crime families.

Imagine hanging around the House for 12 years in the minority. Only real losers would do that. Anyone with something going for him would have other options. So is this the change Americans wanted? grouchy old men like Murtha, Rangel, and Waxman?

Bring it up again the next time old Murtha steps in it,and he will.

That's exactly what the Repubs should be doing. Murtha can't help but lose it, and often because of his loss of mental capacity. He's really been slipping mentally in the last year or so.
