Edwards: Move Past 'War on Terror' May 23 11:36 AM US/Eastern By BETH FOUHY

Associated Press Writer NEW YORK (AP) - Democrat John Edwards Wednesday repudiated the notion that there is a "global war on terror," calling it an ideological doctrine advanced by the Bush administration that has strained American military resources and emboldened terrorists.

In a defense policy speech he planned to deliver at the Council on Foreign Relations, Edwards called the war on terror a "bumper sticker" slogan Bush had used to justify everything from abuses at the Abu Ghraib prison to the invasion of Iraq.

"We need a post-Bush, post-9/11, post-Iraq military that is mission focused on protecting Americans from 21st century threats, not misused for discredited ideological purposes," Edwards said in remarks prepared for delivery. "By framing this as a war, we have walked right into the trap the terrorists have set—that we are engaged in some kind of clash of civilizations and a war on Islam."

Apparently, there really are two Americas: one that believes that radical Islam is a threat to us, and another that doesn't.

What lah-dee-fricking-dah, Mr. Edwards.

What would you call it? “The War On Exceedingly Rude People”?

I cannot believe anyone with a sound mind can see this weasel as “presidential timber”. And “he” (of course I use the masculine term generously in the context of this hypocritical, ambulance chasing twerp) is considered a “frontrunner” by the so-called MSM.

Breathtaking in his ignorance!

It’s taking important time away from his “War on Split Ends”.

A “frontrunner?” I thought he was way behind the other two socialists.

"Breathtaking in his ignorance"

What scares me is that, lately, the American people seem all too breathtaking in their ignorance and completely capable of electing someone like him in '08.

Is this the guy we want answering the phone at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, at 2 AM when bad things happen?

I don’t think so.

“Edwards is nuts!”

***

He’s a reasonably good looking man. But he has the brains of a kumquat.

Come to think of it, a kumquat is probably a lot smarter.

Sure.

(As long as he's the guy at the switchboard and not the guy to whom the call is directed.)

Funny, that's what I said about Bill Clinton when he was running for his first term.

we have walked right into the trap the terrorists have set—that we are engaged in some kind of clash of civilizations and a war on Islam.

What clarity of vision. What did he have to say in the past?

Which way is the wind blowing?

Senator John Edwards
Center for Strategic and International Studies
Washington, DC
October 7, 2002
Remarks as prepared for delivery

...Today I want to focus on America's role in the world, and especially, how the exercise of American leadership around the world is critical to protecting the security of Americans here at home.

...But the first responsibility of any government is the safety and security of its citizens. I believe that, today, that responsibility imposes three challenges above all others: first, to eliminate the threat of chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons; second, to win the war on terrorism; and third, to promote democracy and freedom around the world, especially the Middle East.
