Police kill coyote in N.J.
chron.com ^ | May 23, 2007 | WAYNE PARRY Associated Press Writer

Posted on 05/23/2007 8:15:13 PM PDT by DJ MacWoW

Police shot and killed a coyote Wednesday less than a mile from where a 5-year-old boy was attacked this week but cautioned that at least four others were roaming nearby.

It was not known whether the animal that was killed was the same one that bit Brayden Gazette as he and his sister were playing near their home on Monday.

"It's somewhat of a relief, but I'm still going to be watching out for my kids every minute," said the boy's mother, Joann Gazette. "Who knows how many more are out there? And how can anyone be sure if this is the one who bit my son?"

The animal was killed about three-quarters of a mile from her home, she said.

Police cornered the animal and chased it along a fence of the Earle Naval Weapons Station before shooting it with a .40-caliber handgun, said Township Administrator Robert Czech.

"It was apparently trying to find an access point back into the Navy property," he said.

Police spotted at least four other coyotes before the animal was killed, he said. Traps are still in place to capture other coyotes.

"I'm relieved we got one so that we can get some information about the population that might be out there; whether she was nursing or had pups," he said. "But this underscores that there are other coyotes out there. We saw at least five."

The coyote that was killed was a female that weighed about 35 pounds. The carcass was to be tested for rabies.

Brayden got 46 stitches in the back of the head and two rabies shots after a coyote bit him Monday.

Another boy, 22-month-old Liam Sadler, was grabbed by a coyote while playing near the naval station April 6. The toddler had to undergo rabies shots.

What pissed me off about the Middletown attack was that one of the neighbors PUT OUT FOOD for the coyote! It was only a matter of time before someone got hurt.

Folks who put out food for bears, coyotes and gators should get slapped upside the head by a 33-degree Freemason (they wear VERY big rings).

FWIW: Since moving to NJ, I have seen pheasents, wild turkey, foxes, opposums, beaver, muskrat (in Flemington), and, yes, a coyote. Don't get me started on the rats with antlers...

We hear coyotes frequently at night, but I haven’t actually seen one here on our property. We’ve lost geese in the past, from, I think, coyotes. I’m going to keep an eye on my grandchildren.

Maybe they were stupid and thought it was a dog. We have coyotes up here too, just north into rural NY. They stand in the bushes across the street and watch us. Scary.

We’ve been killing them here in central Virginia for several years now. One of my co-workers who lives in a neighboring county has killed three in the last two years alone.

We don’t have any coyotes around here anymore. The mountain lions have all but driven them away. Keeps a check on the local cat population too.

Shouldn't put out food for feral dogs either. Call animal control, ya old hags! ;-)

But seriously, other than bird feeders, folks who attempt to habituate wild animals to humans by "an act of compassion" are doing the rest of us a disservice.

Feral cats were a big problem when I lived in Miami. Was kinda cool to see a mom give birth to a litter behind the dryer, however.

I used to kill them for the $5 bounty.

About 30 years ago you could get a dressed out lamb from the ranchers in Utah for a pair of cayote ears.

In Wilkes County, GA I have two different packs near my house, the dogs have fought off one black bear in the yard, and I saw one mountain lion (with tracking collar) less than 1/2 mile from my house. I am told I can not take preventive measures to stop any of these from killing my dogs and cats.

We only feed birds and keep the extra seed indoors because of rodents. But being rural, we have a problem with people dumping their cats here. I find homes for most of them. The ones that I can’t catch are coyote food. Which must be why they watch my house. Smart people take their pets to shelters and don’t feed wild animals. Too bad the “compassionate caregivers” don’t realise that they’re tempting an attack.

That sux. But REDWOOD99 has the cure if they'd just come near the road. Well..........except for the bear.

We had new neighbors chase a bear down the creek trying to get a pic. The fool had his 2 young daughters with him. They didn't live here long. And no one got hurt.

I killed seven last Sunday and considered it a bad day hunting. Of course there are about hundreds of them nearby. Can’t shoot them in populated areas and they have figured that out. Live is tough in the West!

A related story.

COYOTE ATTACKS TODDLER 04/10/07

And while officials have not yet received independent confirmation, because of Friday's attack, and based on the description and behavior of the animals, it appears coyotes are roaming in the neighborhood near Normandy Road, the private thoroughfare that connects the main base of the Earle Naval Weapons Station with the weapons station's pier on Sandy Hook Bay, Township Administrator Robert Czech said.

"They didn't think they were dealing with a pattern, or series of incidents that related to a pack of coyotes, until we put pieces together (after) Friday evening," he said.

The other cases include four puppies that were killed and a pet cat that was attacked, he said.

as they say, the garden state. We have a lot to offer here in NJ. I always thought it was against the law to leave food out for wild animals. I hope the parents of the boy sue their stupid neighbors.

What’s the saying? “Shot, shovel, shut-up” Have lots of coyotes in rural East Texas. Our 2 young dogs keep them away without a fight. Have lost cats, but never heard of any coyote attacking anyone, although have had an obvious cross-breed (dog-coyote) come pretty close to the house in daylight.

Here either. The cat though, that's another story. There was one, last year, I think that was within 30 feet of my horses.

The horses were leaning over the fence to see what it was. I grabbed my brother-in-law's rifle and the box of shells next to it and had my wife drive me down to where she saw the cat. I had her circle around and drop me off in some brush and then go back to drive through and flush the cougar out, past me.

It all seemed like a pretty good plan until I tried to put some cartridges in the rifle. They didn't fit. I looked at the box and it made perfect sense. .300 Magnum shells will not fit a 30-06. Boy did I feel stupid and was mighty glad that the cat had already left the vicinity. It had doubled back the other direction and ended up tearing up a few of my neighbor's horses about a mile down the road and almost killed his stud.

I wouldn't call it a ranch, just 40 acres. The whole story about the rifle gets a little more in depth. I already had my pistol but my wife wanted to get her rifle. I told her to grab my 30-30 while she was at it. I swear, it took her 40 minutes to get back outside. She must have changed her clothes and freshened her makeup while I waited for her. Maybe she made a phone call or two as well.
