Breaking into the exclusive Highgate property market in north London is notoriously difficult. But yesterday a homeless man apparently did the almost-impossible, managing to secure his very own slice of prime real estate on Hampstead Heath for free.

Harry Hallowes, 70, says he has been given the title deeds to a piece of land on the edge of the heath on which he has been squatting for more than two decades. The 65ft by 131ft plot has been estimated to be worth up to £2 million.

Once upon a time lived in La Jolla, California, a super beautiful and somewhat expensive area on the beach. Had a buddy that lived in a storage room 5x12 of an apt for 5 years. No toilet, no shower. He would walk to the public toilet (you may have read Thomas Wolfes The Pump-house Gang, same spot) by the beach and shower off at the surfer shower every morning. I don’t think he got the title to the place though.

Ha- of all places, Southern California, he certainly would have had a shot at it if he would have brought it to court. I had a lesbian friend who lived with a gay man for years, as roommates and one day she said— “Hey, we’ve lived together for 7 years— we have a common law marriage!” and they’d giggle

Its all relative that is for sure - had a neighbor from La Jolla move to South Texas at that time, he said he could buy the entire town for what he sold his house for.
