Jimmy Carter: The Worst President In American History

In this exclusive 10-part series, IBD takes a hard look at Jimmy Carter’s administration and compares it to that of George W. Bush, which Carter has called the worst ever.

Installments will cover the economy, foreign policy, human rights, dealing with dictators, fighting Communism and the Democratic leadership in general during times of war.

Part One Look Who's Talking

Leadership: So Jimmy Carter calls the Bush administration "the worst in history." This from the man who wrecked the world's greatest economy and made a nuclear Iran and North Korea possible.

Part Two 'Malaise' Maestro

Leadership: When it comes to economic performance, there's no contest: Apart from the early years of the Depression, Jimmy Carter's brief tenure as president was the worst in the 20th century.

Part Three Carter Planted Seeds Of Al-Qaida

Leadership: After being told over and over by President Jimmy Carter that America's ability to influence world events was "very limited," the Soviet Union believed him and invaded Afghanistan. And al-Qaida was born.

Part Four

Iran: Carter's Habitat For Inhumanity

Leadership: In the name of human rights, Jimmy Carter gave rise to one of the worst rights violators in history — the Ayatollah Khomeini. And now Khomeini's successor is preparing for nuclear war with Israel and the West.

Well, I’ve always been torn over whether Pres Carter or President Clinton was worse. I tended to put Pres Clinton as the worst, due to selling the missile secrets to the Chinese. Certainly the wreck of Iran is due to Pres Carter, as is the loss of the Panama Canal. But the point about Afghanistan happening due to Pres Carter then leading to al-Qaeda probably tips the balance toward him. And he did all this in 4 years—Clinton had 8 years.

If he was tried for his real crimes ... national security arena ... rather than sex and perjury, it would be a much different story. Another lesson in the GOP caving to the Dems.

Carter is better at fighting rabbits than Bush.

Carter also sees flying saucers better.

I am not torn. President Carter was the worst President in History!!!!!! I will stand by that til my dying day. There was NOTHING good at all during his Presidency!!! President Clinton at least had some highlights (I know you won’t agree, but I stand by Carter being the worst!!!!).

This series is so damning to Carter. I can't believe how much damage this guys 4 years in the White House did to world peace. Imagine if he hadn't thrown the shah to the wolves. Would Iran conceivably be a western-style Islamic democracy today? It would be interesting to see an alternative history where this occured. Instead we get to live in a much more dangerous and deadly world. It's also interesting to see how ignorant liberals are.

This is so revealing that Carter was doing things in the 70's that didn't work and that liberals are proposing the SAME DAMN THING: "import quotas, windfall profits taxes and increased spending on alternative fuels — to combat higher oil prices charged by OPEC." I wonder how people will like it when there are gas shortages because gas stations won't sell at a loss. Just like the freakin' 70's.

What do you mean there was nothing good during his presidency...the marijuana trade exploded under Carter ;-)

But seriously it was precisely because of his weakness that we are in the mess we’re in.

I second that! Clinton may have committed adultery with others; Carter said he did adultery in his own mind. Yes, Carter was always f*k'n himself up! I hated him and those 4 years he was president.

At first I thought that perhaps Clinton was worse because he was operating out of pure venality, he was in it for the money, while Carter was just a bumbler.

In retrospect and having watched Carter lowering himself further and further in a desperate attempt to be relevant, I can clearly see that he has been one mean incompetent little chit right from the start.

Clinton wasn’t close.

Jimmuh was the worst foreign policy President of modern times, LBJ the worst domestic policy President. It’s a toss up which was worse, overall.

I, too, used to think Carter was well-meaning but stupid. I’m in your camp, now.

Another Carter disaster I just remembered.

Mariel Boatlift.
Castro cleared out his prisons and sent them to us.

That was my take also. He was too nice to step on anyone's toes, leading to indecision.

But he really is a nasty little man.

The highlight of his Presidency was following the escapades of his brother Billy.

I always thought that irreverent Billy, like W in his drinking days, would be a great guy to have a few beers with. (But please God, not Billy Beer!)

Then I remember just who he (Billy) was riding around with when he stopped the limo for a leak. Seems even back then, the Carters were in bed with the Saudis.

I still put Clinton ahead as worst President.

Giving away missle secrets significantly contributes to a future problem that is bigger than Islamic fundamentalism.

Clinton did nothing...NOTHING...to stop Al Qaeada or Bin Laden. His apathy was a significant contributor to 9/11.

He allowed the UN “Food-for-Oil” fiasco to continue without restriction.

I also suspect that the FBI files issue influences a lot of the unusual political decisions we see today (like, Senator Kyl supporting amnesty?!).

Don’t dilute the seriousness of perjury and obstruction of justice - these were serious crimes. People in the Bush administration are being forced to resign for far far less serious infractions of judgement.

His presidency may very well give us Hillary as President; there is no way that she would win if she wasn’t a Clinton.

He had 8 years of prosperity that was handed to him by prior Republican management of the economy...and did nothing with it. His only significant accomplishment (welfare reform) was a Republican initiative that he rejected twice before being faced with a veto override.

And yes, the sex thing was an embarassment.

Carter was a classic example of the Peter Principle.

He rose to the level of his incompetence.

And then we had the press trying to canonize his mother, Lillian.

I always thought of Lillian as fairly honest, in that she took a look at what she had begot and promptly took to drinking herself into oblivion every day.
