Joe McCarthy: Gone But Certainly Not Forgotten by Michael M. Bates

May 25, 2007

It would be remiss of me not to note that this month marks 50 years since the death of Senator Joe McCarthy. What would Commies, pinkos, socialists, leftists, liberals, and their lackeys and handmaidens have done for the past half century if they didn’t have old Joe to kick around?

Even after all this time, the Wisconsin Republican is in the news. Recently, the Los Angeles Times ran an obituary for Bernard Gordon, described by the newspaper as “one of the younger screenwriters blacklisted during the McCarthy era.” Mr. Gordon, we’re told, was “unable to find work because of the blacklist.”

There was a blacklist, but it existed a long time before McCarthy jumped on the anti-Communist bandwagon. The House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) investigated Red infiltration in Hollywood and called “the Hollywood Ten” of writers, directors and producers to testify in 1947. McCarthy started his crusade against Communism three years later.

Bernard Gordon was subpoenaed by HUAC in 1952, but was never called to testify. That was also the year of his first produced screenplay. So did he actually find himself out of work because of the blacklist?

Not according to the Writers Guild of America, West. Using other people’s names, he kept quite busy. The Corrected Blacklist Credits list, as maintained by the guild, shows Mr. Gordon worked on a picture in 1954, one in 1956, five in 1957 and one in 1958. The LA Times obituary states he made more than 20 films. That doesn’t suggest he was unable to work because of the blacklist.

Another fresh reference to Joe came from an Atlanta Journal-Constitution columnist earlier this month. She wrote of a Republican congressional candidate who “sounds as though he’s running to replace U.S. Sen. Joseph McCarthy, the notorious Wisconsin Republican whose Commie-baiting smear tactics ruined lives. . . ”

The claim that McCarthy destroyed the lives of many innocent people is a preferred refrain of those who don’t know what in the world they’re talking about. The respected author M. Stanton Evans has an excellent reply when challenged with that assertion: “Name one.”

When Ann Coulter asked Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly to identify a McCarthy-tormented innocent, the best the former history teacher could come up with was Dalton Trumbo, one of HUAC’s “Hollywood Ten.” You might think the self-proclaimed no spin genius would know that senators don’t chair House Committees. You’d be wrong.

My own experience with McCarthy detractors is they’re no better informed than O’Reilly. Long in loathing for Joe, they’re invariably short on facts. One acquaintance told me he could just never forgive or forget how McCarthy attacked Bert Parks in a televised hearing.

Only it wasn’t Bert Parks, the longtime host of Miss America pageants, it was an actor named Larry Parks. And it wasn’t McCarthy, but HUAC. And it wasn’t televised. And it was years before McCarthy kicked his struggle with Communism off in his 1950 Wheeling, West Virginia speech.

Otherwise, the acquaintance had all his facts right. Besides, the McCarthy era encompasses anything bad that happened and relates to anti-Communism, regardless of when it really occurred. It could just as easily have been coined the Truman/Eisenhower era or the Willie Mays era or the Bishop Fulton J. Sheen era. Those, however, simply wouldn’t have conveyed the genuine horror of the period when Tail Gunner Joe purportedly rode roughshod over everyone’s civil liberties.

Shortly after his Wheeling speech, Democrats insisted McCarthy name names, right here and now. His response on the Senate floor:

“The Senator from Illinois demanded, loudly, that I furnish all the names. I told him at that time that so far as I was concerned, I thought that would be improper; that I did not have all the information about these individuals. . . .I have enough to convince me that either they are members of the Communist Party or they have given great aid to the Communists: I may be wrong. That is why I said that unless the Senate demanded that I do so, I would not submit this publicly, but I would submit it to any committee - and would let the committee go over these in executive session. It is possible that some of these persons will get a clean bill of health. . . .”

Yes, he was so very irresponsible, making outrageous accusations and annihilating blameless people. Little wonder that only last month a Colorado Springs Gazette sportswriter wrote: “In the early 1950s, Sen. Joe McCarthy recklessly - and often inaccurately - accused hundreds of Americans of Communist sympathies. His name will forever define a savage, sad time in our history.”

And this was in the sports pages for heaven’s sake. A Google search on “McCarthyism” today shows over 300 news articles using the term. “McCarthy era” brings up more than 150. Buried for 50 years, Joe McCarthy’s still taking a beating from the fellow-traveling press. He was no saint, but the mainstream media rarely takes the time to get their details straight. Any similarity between what we read and historical reality is strictly coincidental. Mike M. Bates has written a weekly column of opinion - or nonsense, depending on your viewpoint - since 1985 for the (southwest suburban Chicago) Oak Lawn Reporter Newspapers. Additionally, his articles have appeared in the Congressional Record, the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Sun-Times and the Mensa Journal.

Reminds me of the story the other day of a high school kid being forced to watch Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" in 4 separate classes, including twice in one class -- and that class was Phys Ed!!

I remember that my father had a “crazy old aunt” that thought the
US guvmint was loaded with Communist spies/operatives in the 1950s.

The family generally humored her and just thought she was a little
over-fevered on the issue.

After seeing the PBS NOVA episode linked below (”Secrets, Lies
and Atomic Spies”), I realized how on-target the “crazy old aunt” was.

I almost had a heart attack because the PBS production says that McCarthy
was right about the Communist infiltration, even though his aim
for specific targets was sometimes in error.

This show aired multiple times on the big PBS station in Los Angeles...
I wonder if some of the current Hollywood crowd was interested to
see what REALLY happened in the time of “The Black List”.

Just an historical question. Wasn’t the committee’s real name THE HOUSE COMMITTEE ON UNAMERICAN ACTIVITIES? The Left likes the other name: THE HOUSE UNAMERICAN ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE.

Interesting sidebar on Trumbo: he was a self-appointed FBI informant
that “named names” in reporting people (pacifists and right-wingers)
that requested his book “Johnny Got His Gun” during WWII.
(presuming those wanting the book would promote a diminuation of
the war effort, especially to the USSR)

Tip of the hat to David Horowitz and Front Page Mag for the linked article!

The next time you hear some leftist bash McCarthy ask them to explain how Senator Joseph McCarthy had any control over the House Committee on Un-American Activities and why this committee was not abolished until 1975, 18 years after the senator died.

Joe McCarthy was a great American patriot, and if you ever find yourself in an argument about McCarthy with some liberal, ask them to explain why Bobby Kennedy not only worked for McCarthy, but McCarthy was a family friend of the Kennedys, and there are very few (if any) recorded instances of ANY Kennedy saying anything critical of Joe.

Don’t expect them to have an explanation, they will most likely sputter, drool, turn purple and rip their hair out, lol.

McCarthy's worst failing was an inability to see the surge of celebrity culture rising through TV (led by CBS).

That's why Ed Murrow was able to beat him.

That's a good question. I've seen HUAC identified different ways. According to the National Archives here it's the House Un-American Activities Committee.

It was also called "the house committee on un-American activities" in this 1952 Chicago Tribune article on Comrade Studs Terkel.

Because of the Congressional hearings inspired by McCarthy’s activities, hundreds of communists and other security risks were flushed out of high places in government.

McCarthy, a twice elected senator from Wisconsin and a WWII war hero is still hated to this day by the left because he chased so many communist spies out of Washington. Somewhere Alger Hiss is still hissing.

True...newspaper reds had been attacking McCarthy for years. However, McCarthy largely soldiered on undaunted.

But the advent of TV journalism led by CBS changed things IMO. TV catered more to the masses and the lefties there were able to demogogue through appearance and pictures. I believe McCarthy began to lose his steam when Murrow took him on because it was impossible for McCarthy to compete with the "glamour" of TV.

Sort of the same principle by which many say Nixon lost his debate with Kennedy because he didn't appear have to same movie-star qualities on TV (however, many of those who heard the debate on the radio thought Nixon had won).

Waves of immigrants who came to the USA from 1880-1920: the poles the italians the irish the jews. Most of them voted for FDR by large majorities in 1932, 1936 & 1940. Today only the jews still vote democratic by hefty majorities. Why? The reason for this dates explicitly to the McCarthy period from 1950-54. The reason this is so is because Hollywood still strenuously maintains the communist lie about that era. This lie is maintained by movies in the last years called “A Beautiful Mind,” and “Good Night and Good Luck”.

There are various reasons given as to why Stalin initiated the Doctor’s Plot in the early 1950’s before he died. The KGB hated Israel. Many Americans who were enthusiastic supporters of the UN were Jewish.

Edvard Radzinsky in his book “Stalin” argues that while at one time Stalin hoped Jewish financial capital would help rebuild the Soviet Union after the WWII, Stalin hated the prospect of suborning himself to the Baruch Plan and he flat out rejected IAEA nuclear controls—presented in 1946. The Russians were working on their own abomb based on stolen US designs. (Stalin’s attitude is not entirely dissimliar to that of Iran today.)

Whatever the reason, Stalin fomented the Doctor’s plot hysteria and broke off diplomatic relations with Israel. He was within days of preparing to exile the Soviet Jews to the Gulag (as was done previously with various other ethnic minorities such as the Crimean Tatars, Chechens, etc.), and initiate another great purge along the lines of 1938.

The important thing to recall is that the Doctor’s Plot happened at the same time as the McCarthy anti communist business from 1950-54

Stalin already had the concentration camps set up. And some of the preliminary accusations had gone out for the Doctor’s Plot when he died in 1953.

At the same time the Rosenburgs were tried and executed for treason in the USA in 1953—and this less than a decade after the Holocaust. This naturally caused fear and suspicion in the US Jewish community. This fear and suspicion was played upon by knowledgeable communists and leftists—large numbers of whom were jewish. These folk not only knew about what Stalin had done in the 1930’s and was about to do with the doctor’s plot—before he died— but also saw the Rosenburg trials as show trials american style ... that is, a prelude to an american pogrom.

What Stalin had planned to do— in a brilliant piece of jujitsu —leftists and communists imputed to Americans on the right. But it was done soto voce. Basically a blood libel was perpetrated on Americans without their knowing it. Worse, protestant america were painted as tribal enemies tooth and claw of the US jewish establishment without protestant america even knowing it. Never again! — Was the battle cry. But there weren’t any protestant tribal enemies of Jews in the USA. If this were so then the founder of the JDL, Meyer Kahane would have provoked them into a bloodletting. Why? Because he heard the same thing as everyone else. He also heard about enemies of the jews in the heartland. When he went to give battle, the only sorts of fights the JDL could find resulted in unintelligible court disputes in places like Idaho. In the end, Kahane married an american woman & helped expedite Stalin’s last wish—to rid Russia of Jews. When Kahane died it was at the hands of a Moslem in 1990.

While the American public outside NY/LA were generally given the view that the McCarthy era was an age when innocent men were unjustly tried by suspicious anti semites like McCarthy & Nixon—the NY/LA Jewish establishment was given a very different story. They were given to understand that the democrats/liberals had prevented the US from visiting a holocaust on them. And that therefor American Jews owed their loyalty to the liberal democrats because the liberal democrats were the protectors of the Jews.

And this Meme went on untouched for decades after McCarthy.

This dual track story line didn’t crack until the early 1990’s when the kgb/nkvd/gru opened up their files on the WWII-McCarthy Period. In 1995 the US’s NSA agency opened up their Venona files. Both Russian and American spy agency files showed that McCarthy was right. The US government —as well as the Manhattan Project—had been at one time soaked with Russian Spies. The Rosenburgs were guilty. While McCarthy was wrong in most the details he got the general outline of the story right. Why did McCarthy get the outline right and the details wrong? The reason is McCarthy’s relationship to Hoover was the same as Hoover’s relationship to the NSA.The NSA told the FBI about the Venona intercepts but insisted that the FBI could not use NSA intercepts as evidence in court. The FBI had to develop their own leads. As a result most of the spies escaped prosecution. The FBI did not get their man.

In 1950 J Edgar Hoover began weekly meetings with Joseph McCarthy. Those meetings ended in 1954. The beginning and end of those meetings coincided with the beginning and end of McCarthy star turn in the national spot light. McCarthy got most of the details of the spy story wrong but he got the general outline of the story right. His predicament was the same as that of the FBI. Whatever Hoover told him—McCarthy could not use in the senate hearings. To this day the FBI denies that Hoover told McCarthy anything about the Venona Cables and maybe Hoover said nothing explicit to McCarthy for which Hoover could be liable in court.

Needless to say, an American style shoah was never in the cards.

The reason that hollywood hated Ronald Reagan so much was that he was an anti communist in hollywood during the McCarthy period. During this period to be staunchly anti communist in Hollywood or NYC was to be at least vaguely anti semetic because in the 30’s to the 50’s communism was considered to be almost a secular form of Judaism in the Jewish communities of NY/LA. Why? In Russia, communism was a way to get ahead for the jews. As well, there was a biblical antecedent for jewish communists in the bible in the person of Joseph in Egypt. Why? Because the relationship between jews to joseph’s Egypt maps over well to jews in Russia. And the history of the jews from Joseph to Moses looks very similiar to the rise to prominance of many jews in the soviet communist bureaucracy from the 1917-1970 and the decades long expulsion of Russia’s jews after 1970 when it became clear that communism was not working. The Russians blamed Russian jews for the failure of communism.

Reagan was among the first wave of FDR democrats to switch parties. Reagan’s star turn in Hollywood ended after McCarthy. However, his experiences in Hollywood served him well when he went into public service. He always understood the jujitsu of media talk of the age. Something that cannot be said of Nixon.

When I hear American based Moslems talking about McCarthyism being visited on them. I have to laugh. They don’t know that they have pronounced themselves guilty in the eyes of many Americans.

As for the democrats, part of the reason for the loss of their inner coherence has been that part their foundational raison d’être steming from the McCarthy era was revealed to be based on a lie. So now the core of the democratic party is the sodomites. Those folks are not just confusing. They are confused.

David Horowitz interviewed by Rush Limbaugh a couple months ago talked about how his parents were communists and he was a communist in college. He said when he was in college his views were always treated respectfully by his professors. But he said recently a young christian college student told him that his homosexual college professor had singled him out in class and asked him “Why do you christians hate queers.” Asked why he continued to do what he did in the face of all the abuse he gets, David Horowitz said like Rush he took public political positions because he had to. But also he said he did it as a matter of atonement.

He gets it.

“In the early 1950s, Sen. Joe McCarthy recklessly - and often inaccurately - accused hundreds of Americans of Communist sympathies. His name will forever define a savage, sad time in our history.”

From the review of Ann Coulter’s book “Treason” on Amazon:

“Reexamining the sixty-year history of the Cold War and beyond—including the career of Senator Joseph McCarthy, the Whittaker Chambers–Alger Hiss affair, Ronald Reagan’s challenge to Mikhail Gorbachev to “tear down this wall,” the Gulf War, and our present war on terrorism—Coulter reveals how liberals have been horribly wrong in all their political analyses and policy prescriptions. McCarthy, exonerated by the Venona Papers if not before, was basically right about Soviet agents working for the U.S. government.”

Yes.

(snip)

This brings us to Senator McCarthy’s death. He was in his 40s when he died on May 2, 1957. He died at Bethesda Naval Hospital, the same hospital from which that other great Patriot, Secretary of the Navy, Forrestal, fell or was thrown to his death. Senator McCarthy’s death certificate reads “Hepatitis Unknown.” There were so many conflicting reports concerning his death that it is very confusing. Medford Evans, the man who wrote “The Assassination of Joseph R. McCarthy” was convinced that the Senator had been murdered, and I’m inclined to agree with him. But I hope his life will encourage others to learn the truth, and I pray that the truth will lead America back to a Christian government. Joseph McCarthy was buried at Appleton, W.I., where every Spring there is a Memorial Service. These Memorial Services are held under the auspices of the McCarthy Educational Foundation, which has been doing an excellent job of keeping his memory alive... The Foundation would like to continue the placement of the Senator’s two books in high schools and colleges... Both Senator McCarthy’s “McCarthyism, The Fight For America” and “America’s Retreat From Victory,” the story of George Catlett Marshall, are available from the Joseph R. McCarthy Educational Foundation, Inc, 2219 South 65th Street, Milwaukee, WI, 53219... Thank you so much for listening, and thank you for helping to bring some truth back to America. May God bless the memory of a great Christian Patriot, Joseph R. McCarthy.

I have always thought that the correct name of the committee was The House Committee on unAmerican Activities. My understanding is that the left, playing their word games back then as they do to this day, was trying to redefine the committee itself as un-American because it was investigating communist activities. If there is a way to access the early documents of the committee it would be interesting, as well as enlightening, to know for sure which title was the original.
