BAGHDAD - A day after radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr resurfaced to end nearly four months in hiding and demand U.S. troops leave Iraq, American forces raided his Sadr City stronghold and killed five suspected militia fighters in air strikes Saturday.

U.S. and Iraqi forces called in the air strikes after a raid in which they captured a "suspected terrorist cell leader," the U.S. military said in statement.

The statement claimed the captured man was "the suspected leader in a secret cell terrorist network known for facilitating the transport of weapons and explosively formed penetrators, or EFPs, from Iran to Iraq, as well as bringing militants from Iraq to Iran for terrorist training."

Those always do good work, they are the best in the world. All you need do is get rid of the politics and the “winning the hearts and minds” nonsense, and they can do the rest. You win by putting the bad actors on the express lane to getting their 72 raisins. :)

When will the US get serious and kill Muqtada al-Sadr? The troop “surge” is just a waste of time, money and lives as long as that A-Hole is alive.

Hope this works out. I get the feeling he was allowed to return as long as he said what he did about stopping the violence so the “occupiers” had no reason to stay and would leave Iraq.

Good news.

I still remember Byrd and Kennedy trading quotes back and forth with Muktard the Satyr about how Iraq was the new Vietnamesque quagmire.

This was happening while our soldiers and Marines were cornering that filthy sack of nasty and taking his “militia” apart in Najaf.

Byrd and Kennedy gave the impression of being big fans of that particular lump of enemy.

Do they have orders to either shoot or detain this guy? Detaining him would only ignite revolt. They should kill him.

I recently watched an excellent documentary on the Military Channel called the “Alpha Company.” I was very surprised by the “rules of engagement” they had to follow. Especially when they explained that the clerics carried an ID card which US troops called a “Get Out of Jail Free” card. They were not allowed to detain a cleric without approval of a US General even when they find clear evidence of anti US activity in his possession.

War is hell.... While I’m sympathetic to both sides in any engagement, giving diplomatic immunity to your enemy every time you catch them is like using a hav-a-heart trap to catch the rodents in my barn so I can let them loose again. A catch & release program does not solve the problem!

Hmmmmm, I agree with you. There is “sympathetic”, then there is “stupid” and then there is “bloody hell stupid”. In my mind this particular ROE falls under the very last category. I wonder how many fake “Get Out of Jail Free Cards” are floating around Iraq? I wonder how many U.S. Generals are wondering around Iraq ready with a “Detain This Mullah Stamp” handy? I wonder who thought up this particular rule? I wonder if we would have given Hitler a “Get Out of Jail Free Card”? And why not if not?

Yes- and it should have happened years ago. Iran should have gotten an early message in the summer of 03 that we weren’t going to tolerate any destabilization games.

The US Military should have made an example of Sadr and his merry band of dirtbags- as well as the scum in Fallujah.

You’re right. Leave the soldiering to soldiers and they’ll deliver every time. This is why I advocate a complete disconnect between politics and war. Once the “trigger is pulled” (military action is taken), Congress should have no ability to interefere with said military action in any way until the pre-specified conditions of victory are met.

We'll never get close enough to the Chicken Man for that. A .50 BMG probably is too short ranged.

Which I would have not have hesitated to drop on the Mosque in Najaf when he was ranting there yesterday. Although for various reasons a .50 BMG round might have been better in that instance.

They’re taking exactly the right actions to win the ‘hearts and minds’ Iraqis who, as a rule, always help whoever presents the greatest risk to them. When the word gets out that letting a terrorist stay in that spare room can result in your house disappearing, they’ll be less willing to help terrorists. The concept of actions having consequences is alien to them, so it’s an important one to teach.

BAGHDAD, May 26 (Reuters) - Eight more U.S. soldiers have been killed in five attacks in different areas of Iraq over the past four days, the U.S. military said on Saturday.

US, British forces battle Mehdi Army

American and British forces have battled Mehdi Army fighters in Baghdad and Basra after their leader, Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, used a rare public appearance to call on US troops to get out of Iraq.

Five gunmen were killed in an air strike during a pre-dawn raid on Saturday (local time) in the cleric’s Sadr City stronghold in Baghdad, the US military said.

A militant leader suspected of ties to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards was captured.

The US military said eight of its soldiers had been killed in five attacks in Iraq since Wednesday.

In the southern oil hub of Basra, the British military said “a number” of militia fighters were killed in an air strike overnight after they attacked British troops with rocket-propelled grenades, mortars and machine guns.

The attacks were believed to be in retaliation for the killing of the top Mehdi Army commander in the city on Friday (local time) by British-backed Iraqi special forces, the British military said.

The fighting came a day after Sadr appeared in public for the first time in months and repeated his demand for a timetable for US troop withdrawal.

In Washington, the White House played down a report that the Bush administration was considering sharp cuts in troop levels.

The New York Times said the administration was developing concepts in which US combat forces would be reduced to around 100,000 by mid-2008 from close to 150,000 now.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino noted that 30,000 extra US troops ordered to Iraq as part of a security crackdown had not all arrived yet.

The increase was aimed at setting conditions that would allow US troops to return home.

Wow, Reuters is SOOOOOOOOOOO on top of the US casualty rate! I am SOOOOOOOOOOO impressed. /s

I wonder when Reuters will give us the casualty rate of the ENEMY? Oh that’s right, Reuters works for the enemy! They have enough staff and contacts to report on the enemy’s death rate, you know. Wonder why they are NOT doing that? Now THAT would be an interesting post!

Ping me ONLY when you report on the Enemy’s casualty rate. I watch MSM so I get all the info you post BEFORE you post it. NEWS FLASH, you are NOT posting anything new or interesting.

Surprise me with new, honest, and truthful stats that are NOT reported by MSM.

I am really dumbfounded that this POS has not been killed yet. The fact that he fled to Iran when the crackdown began, has been protected by Iran, is the LEADER of the militia that is engaged in direct battle with the U.S, again has declared the U.S. the enemy and encouraging attacks on our troops while preaching "unity" with some Sunnis (we know which ) and has not been killed is amazing. I'm sure they will argue some "strategic" reason for leaving him alone, but again this is example Number One imo of why the "surge" while I pray it works, demonstrates tepidness on U.S. leadership's part and I wonder what message this sends to the evildoers who support him to see him prance back in without his motorcade being obliterated and him turned to dust. Mind boggling. "Al-Sadr drove in a long motorcade from Najaf to its sister city of Kufa to deliver an anti-American sermon to 6,000 chanting supporters at the main mosque."
