Not Just Katie: Overall Evening News Plummet Continues
NewsBusters.org ^ | 5/27/07 | http://newsbusters.org/node/13024

For those who prefer their news fair and balanced instead of imbalanced and biased, the demise of the Big 3 networks’ evening newscasts can’t come quickly enough. Though their imminent end seems unlikely (see the reasons at the end of this post), the latest May sweep results strongly indicate that their march towards irrelevance may be completed sooner than originally thought.

All the happy talk at evening news sweep winner ABC should not obscure the fact that over 6% fewer Americans watched the evening newscasts during the May 2007 sweep than did during the May 2006 sweep, and that the combined May 2007 sweep results are barely above those achieved during what was described last summer as the “Low-Water Mark for Broadcast TV Viewing”:

EveningNews0507and0506

Sources:
- 2007 Sweeps — Media Bistro
- July 3, 2006 — Media Bistro; also commented on here last year
- 2006 Sweeps — Estimated based on ABC memo’s claims that ABC was up 7% from last year’s sweep, while NBC and CBS were down 11% and 15%, respectively.

A repeat of last summer’s 7%-plus slide would take total viewership to below 20 million.

I fail to see any reason why the overall decline won’t continue its over quarter-of-a-century trend. It’s hard to imagine that in 1980, about 52 million viewers tuned into the nets’ evening newscasts.

With their numbers down 60% during that time while the US population has increased over a third from 1980’s 226 million, you would think that the nets might start wondering about whether their definition and delivery of the news needs improvement. Failing that, you would think that the nets’ corporate masters might explore pulling the plug on these declining dinosaurs.

Don’t count on either thing happening. I see little, if any, evidence that what I wrote nearly two years ago about how the evening newscasts are going to be with us long after they have become irrelevant has changed (some text revised slightly from original):

….. Perhaps until they’re only speaking to themselves.

Good analysis.IMO the networks will continue to crank out the same inaccurate and biased “news” till the bitter end.Why?It’s part of the leftist/elitist agenda.

Exactly. Any one of the three could begin to report unbiased news and they’d make a fortune in advertising. They won’t do it. It’s not about money it’s about expounding socialism.

Why all the surprise? News in name only? Content-free crap?

Sensationalistic and sordid focus on non-issues and silly-assed side-subjects, fit for fools and mouth-breathers?

Newscasters pretending to be journalists,but merely news “readers”. News “Dolls” all made up and gushing about horrible tragedies and death lists from current war activities with no semblence of compassion whatsoever?

Obsessive and idiotic longwinded coverage of banal doings of the idle rich and insane priviledged few.

Are you starting to get some kind of clue why viewership is falling off?

In the early days, the networks were willing to take losses on their news operations because they contributed greatly to their prestige and gravitas and indirectly attracted more viewers to their other shows.

That is decreasingly true, I should think. What is the point of having an expensive a loss leader, if fewer and fewer people respect it or bother to watch it?

The journalists who put together the nightly news programs could care less if the broadcasts are profitable. It’s obvious that their agenda is more important.

This is like saying "The typical professor in the Princeton philosophy department could care less that the University has had another unprofitable year."

“Low-Water Mark for Broadcast TV Viewing”

The Project for Excellence in Journalism keeps lowering its bar to accommodate a monotonically decreasing "low-water mark".

Evening News Viewership, All Networks

If you think their numbers are bad now, wait until they start their summer re-runs...

CBS Evening News: tonight, The Best of Katie Couric;

Welcome to ABC’s Nightly Highlights of 2006;

NBC is proud to present our nightly retrospective, The Decade in Review.

Rush's inside on the Black Negro story last week on the Today show is a perfect example. NBC possessed all the info that made their story a non-story, but of course they ran it anyway because it fit their template, truth be damned. Perhaps a few million saw the story, but 12-20 milliion know what a scam it was, and watched as NBC exposed their bias.

They won't get away with it for much longer.

"It’s not about money it’s about expounding socialism."

Yes, and when they are down to just a handful of viewers with no sponsors, they'll just demand that the taxpayers pick up the tab so they can continue with the socialist pseudo-news that no one is tuned into.
