One more thing: Even though I am a man in my forties, still single and living in San Francisco, I am assured I am definitely heterosexual for two reasons: First (and most important), guys don't turn me on, and second, I've known I dug chicks ever since seeing Caroline Ellis as Joy the Butterfly on the Kroffts' The Bugaloos. Such a short girl, such long legs!

And I'm not alone. (See footnote)

Yes, "lid" was drug slang for an ounce of marijuana. I didn't think of that until now.

Ref. your comment to brivette:
For the love of God. Is that really necessary? Please take it somewhere else.
I went back and read what brivette said.
Am I missing something here?

CNR was a funny man and a warm human being. RIP. Ellen De Generate and Rosie O’Dumbbell should take notes.

I think Ellen is. She seems very nice. The other name you mentioned...not so much.

As a child, he narrowly escaped the Ringling Brothers circus fire in Hartford, Connecticut, that killed 168 people. He never sat in an audience again, not even for a movie.

Okay, I remember it now. I assume that my mind tried to block it out. And that’s Butch Patrick of The Munsters fame putting the final nail in his acting career.

Y’know, now I recall what bothered my kids about Puffinstuff so much, it’s a recurring theme in Lidsville; they couldn’t get over the trauma of the fact that the boy was separated from his parents. They worried about separation and the boy’s lack of concern. They figured this out and they were 8 and 5. It’s amazing the things that we think are innocuous.

Hey how ‘bout those 2 minute lead in songs explaining the premise of the show. I wonder who did the Lidsville tune?

Joy the Butterfly? Sscchhhwwwwwinggg!

I’m 43 and I know of what you speak. For me the British accent was the kicker. She was gorgeous. I remember that I used to have a Bugaloos lunch box and also being so conflicted by my feelings for Joy. I was a young Catholic boy with strange stuff flying around my head all because of that butterfly.

In fairness I have to say that I remember my first love as being Maria Von Trappe in The Sound of Music. This pretty much sets the stage for the rest of my romantic and idealized life with the fair gender; falling for a defrocked, German nun with a British accent. I suspect that these women creatures will be making me crazy for the rest of my life, or at least as long as I have a pulse. ;0)

The Dead Milkmen wrote a song about Charles Nelson Reilly called Serrated Edge. The link below contain the lyrics to Serrated Edge.

Be Aware that the lyrics to this song may offend some people.

You have been warned. Yes, it may be offensive, but it is very funny..

If it’s some small consolation, I had erased the thought of that irksome jingle from my internal hard drive about 7 hours ago.

Now,...it’s back.

Gracias.

Yes, he was a homosexual. And I hope God will forgive him for it, as I hope He will pardon me for my own weaknesses and sins. But he never made a big deal out of it, and never used it as an excuse for acting like an animal in public. Whatever his personal life was like, Charles Nelson Reilly brought a little joy into the life of a troubled child from a broken home over the years — and that child was me. For that I am grateful.

Farewell to a real entertainer.

Sir (or Madam), those are the most moving and appropriate words I have read on this thread. Amen.

The plain fact is that G-d in His inscrutable Wisdom created us with urges which He forbade us to act on so that we might elevate ourselves and earn merit in His sight. I have no earthly idea why some people have more such urges to overcome than others, though I am absolutely certain that G-d has His reasons. I have never loudly, raucously, or angrily condemned anyone who failed in resisting these urges (may G-d forgive us all!); what I have done is to condemn those who loudly demand that G-d's Laws be done away with because of our weaknesses. That is what this is all about.

A little known, and very sad fact about Mr. Reilly:

When he was 13 in 1944, he attended the Ringling Brothers Circus in Hartford CT, and the main performing tent caught fire with about 8,000 people in it. 168 people were killed, mostly children; it was one of the worst single building fires in American history. Charles escaped from the fire, but was so traumatized by this horror that he never sat in an audience ever again. He would perform on stage thousands of times throughout his career, but never sit in any audience in any performing venue.
