Ann Coulter: A Green Card in Every Pot
Human Events ^ | 30 may 07 | Ann Coulter

Posted on 05/30/2007 3:34:26 PM PDT by rellimpank

Americans -- at least really stupid Americans like George Bush -- believe the natural state of the world is to have individual self-determination, human rights, the rule of law and a robust democratic economy. On this view, most of the existing world and almost all of world history is a freakish aberration.

In fact, the natural state of the world is Darfur. The freakish aberration is America and the rest of the Anglo-Saxon world.

The British Empire once spread the culture of prosperity around the globe -- Judeo-Christian values, tolerance, equality, private property and the rule of law. All recipients of the British Empire's largesse benefited, but the empire's most successful colony was the United States.

George Bush’s problem is that he thinks that if he
doesn’t address a problem (eg. border security,
mad cow disease, the stolen FBI files,
and the utter alienation of his base)
it will go away.

None will.
Instead, he is reckless and endangering American citizens.

She makes some good points here. We have imported a servant class. They are doing jobs Americans aren’t doing. Since everyone wants their children to be good yuppies and go to college and avoid manual labor and service jobs, those jobs are going to the illegals.

But, if we had real control of the border to stop the illegals, maybe wages and benefits for these lowly jobs would improve, and attract some of the welfare recipients or itinerant members of society who could do these jobs.

There is no easy solutions to the problems of illegals. If there were, this problem would have been solved years ago. But it’s clear that we will not recognize this country in another 20 to 30 years if we continue to have unfettered illegal immigration and a lack of assimilation by these illegals. L.A. and other cities will be transplanted banana republic cities. Demography is destiny, as someone once said. There will be such a critical mass of these unassimilated people that the character and culture of our country will change.

“Until the recipient culture is capable of doing an effective job of Americanizing immigrants, it’s preposterous to talk about a massive influx of Hispanic immigrants accomplishing anything other than turning America into yet another Latin American-style banana republic. And it is simply a fact that no one is trying to turn immigrants into Americans.”
::::
Excellent as usual by Ann...and spot on. The Washington government, such as it is, cares not a bit about the real impact of what they are trying to do. A huge rush to push a ruinous disaster upon the American citizen before he can figure out what happened. I agree with Ann -— our traitors are citizens and many of them in Washington. They do not care about America, only their own political and financial objectives.

I disagree. The fact that they cannot legally work and therefore must work for less gives millions of LEGAL citizens less money to legally spend. The entire basis of your “jobs Americans wont do” argument is that Americans are lazy. Your fundamental assumption is false. Your extrapolations based on that assumption must therefore also be false.

But once again, in the rest of the column, she is right on the money.

George Bush IS stupid. For the first time I agree with the Left his intelligence is sub-par - at least when comes to seen what unrestricted illegal immigration would do to America. America is the exception among mankind because we have rules. If we abandon them, we will soon join Darfur, whether neither life, limb, liberty nor property is sacred. Let's not go there with a Green Card in every pot.

That said

Anyone who fails to read Ann Coulter is leaving a great read behind.

Like her - hate her

She is brilliant - and a great humorist and a great author.

I love her - though I don’t always agree - she is brilliant.

Her point is Americans' opposition to the Senate bill would be far less ferocious if it asked something of illegals - a grand bargain whereby they become Americans in name and in heart as well as in law in exchange for this amnesty they're going to be given. Nothing of the sort is being required of them - no loyalty to this country, no being responsible in the civic sense of the word and no playing by the same rules as Americans. No - they're being exempt from all that and as Rudyard Kipling famously put it, being elevated to the status of the "lesser breed without the law." No wonder Americans are so righteously angry. Such an arrangement flies against the very nature of what America is all about.

First, a tribute to a master writer:

“I wish our new immigrants had come to America back when the foundations of civic society and patriotism were still inculcated in all immigrants (and when half of them went home). But traitors who are citizens have destroyed all acculturating institutions. Traitors who are citizens have also destroyed all incentive for the poor to work or even keep their knees together before marriage.”

Now to respond to your point:

“There is no easy solutions to the problems of illegals. If there were, this problem would have been solved years ago. “

Actually there is: enforce our existing laws! What a concept! Deport those who are here illegally. If we deport a million, 5 million or more will flee. If we enforce our workplace regulations another 5 million will leave. What’s the point of infiltrating if you can’t get a job?

We could also try negotiating with Mexico to get their cooperation. We haven’t event tried that.

Yes, this country has absorbed huge migrations of illiterate peasants in the past -- notably Italian immigrants at the turn of the last century. But also notably, half of them went back. We got the good ones. America was not yet a welfare state guaranteeing room and board to the luckless, the lazy and the incompetent from cradle to grave.

Exactly. Defend the borders, stop the welfare and stop giving illegals an incentive to stay here. Time for them to go home and fix their own screwed up countries....they won't do that as long as we continue to give them reason/make it easy not to.

Great article, especially the last paragraph.

There is no easy solutions to the problems of illegals. If there were, this problem would have been solved years ago.

I beg to differ. There is a very easy solution and if it is applied, which it won't be, we would be rid of many of the illegals by their own migration back accross the border.

Jail the employers who hire them, end the benefits they can recieve from welfare, ER services etc, without a valid ID card. Keep a database of their fingerprints(That is already done)when they are actually deported and enforce the law against returning for a specific length of time. In other words, enforce the existing laws and they will self deport.

People who say there is no easy solution just have their heads right up their a**es and are buying into the lies of the politicians, both dems and republicans.

The hard part is for our politicians to find the guts to implement the laws we already have on the books.

What the Senate is engaging in is a form of racism. They seem to be implying with this handout legislation that illegals don't have the ability to achieve on their own and so we must give it to them instead then call it compassion. It really is a superior, elitist attitude they're projecting.

[...]We have imported a servant class. They are doing jobs Americans aren’t doing. [...]

I think the "doing the jobs Americans won't do" line is needlessly petulant. The fact is that there is a job surplus in the United States, and lucky for us most of that surplus is at the bottom of the wage scale. It would be worse if it were otherwise.

It's not so much that we need cheap labor. It is that we need to get the work done and there aren't enough people to do it. A larger and better regulated guest worker program will tend to *raise* those wages, since legal workers have more bargaining power than illegals. Illegals are the 'servant class' that has no power to bargain.

Understand-- I'm not saying this current bill does anything of the kind. I frankly have no idea. But that's what we need to do.

It's false, but nobody is saying that it is because Americans are lazy. It is that we have more jobs than people available to fill them. There's also nothing particularly wrong with that. Also, it's healthier from an economic standpoint that those unfilled jobs are toward the bottom of the wage scale. Millions of unfilled jobs at the *top* of the wage scale would be a far more serious problem.

For the Democrats, its all about expanding government with millions of warm bodies. Republicans are voting for this out of fear they'll lose the Hispanic vote forever if they're seen as bigots, nativists and xenophobes. So the GOP is slitting its on political throat if this ever becomes law. The reason our bipartisan political - er, criminal, class wants to ram this thing through is because they look down on the American people as boobs. They are really are elitists and when they are are under attack, they naturally circle the wagons and go ahead and do what they want.

Mass immigration does expand the economy, at least many sectors of it. But at what price? When there’s 1 billion or 2 in the country would be that enough or do we keep importing more for the sake of profits? Does heritage, language, and culture count for anything in all of this or is the US just a shopping mall where consumers come and go to do business?

One of the things that I really like about Coulter is how her writings separate the men from the boys around here. Those who don't have the guts for a down and dirty fight, which politics is, at its heart, can't help but cringe and wince as she steamrolls over the kinder, gentler, tone.

That is a rather convoluted statement. Many high paying jobs have been leaving this country for decades. We import many of those ‘high paying jobs’ back right now. Undercutting (pay wise) our workforce with non taxed illegals is not healthy no matter how you would try to slice it.

[...]FOR THE MEASLY WAGES PAID ILLEGALS.

There's a couple of things that need to be said about that. First... the mere fact that they are illegal aliens makes them vulnerable to being taken advantage of by unscrupulous employers. A broad system of legal guest worker visas would make them less likely to be hostages to their status by being threatened with deportation. Those wages would tend to rise. That's OK.

Also: If somebody can be replaced by an illiterate (in english) uneducated and unskilled immigrant worker, who then provides a better value to an employer than they do... uh... then it isn't the immigrant or the employer that has the problem.

If I can actually be replaced-- in terms of quality of work, productivity and skill-- by somebody that can do my job as well for a fraction of what I make, then I'm the one ripping off my employer am I not?
