A Good Immigration Bill- By Jeb Bush& Ken Mehlman (It enhances the rule of law)
WSJ.com ^ | 5/31/07 | JEB BUSH AND KEN MEHLMAN

Posted on 05/31/2007 9:20:12 PM PDT by dragnet2

By JEB BUSH AND KEN MEHLMAN

We support the immigration reform compromise worked out in the Senate for a few simple reasons. It strengthens our national defense. It makes our economy more competitive and flexible. It enhances the rule of law and promotes national unity. And it also does these things in a fair, practical way.

The bill provides real border security for the first time, protecting us against the entry of terrorists and stemming the flow of illegal drugs.

The temporary worker program will reduce the number of people trying to sneak past the border patrol, allowing law enforcement to focus on those who pose a threat to the U.S.

immigration reform reinforces the rule of law in a practical and fair way. Today, those in the country illegally live and work without penalty. Doing nothing is the real amnesty.

We've heard that song and dance before, Jeb and Ken.

No one's buying this time.

I guess it all depends on the meaning of "is."

It enhances the rule of law

And they can say that with a straight face.

How does giving amnesty to law breakers enhance the rule of law?

If anything, this bill does the exact opposite. It says that our laws against entering the country illegally are irrelevant. And that does not enhance the rule of law.

“It makes our economy more competitive and flexible.”

Flexible,

like “regularized”

like “labor mobility,”

are code words for

wage depression policies

without saying it straight

the honest man would say he wanted wages “equalized between Mexico and the US,”

but these men are not honest.

You know, I might actually have bought this latest proposal IF the Federal government had been a hard-ass these past 5 years.
They were more than justified to have moved troops to the borders (after 9/11); to have unleashed the INS on illegal immigrants; to have slapped down the poofter 'Sanctuary Cities' ('you want to play 'Sanctuary City'? -- then no Federal Funds for you...); to have imposed serious fines on those that employed illegals. But no. Other than a few dog and pony shows, its been open borders. Once you get across the 'line' -- nearly complete immunity against getting sent back...
I don't buy this amnesty plan for a moment. There will be no teeth -- only a blanket amnesty.
The Feds have built up this animosity the old-fashion way -- They've earned it.

Well, I have to agree with that, that is exactly what the President has been doing NOTHING, except inviting the illegals over with lack of enforcement and talk of “legalization”. People need to keep being be fired until we find someone who will do the job they took a oath to do.

Bush would become an American Hero overnight if he canceled the bill, and declared that the laws in place would be enforced 100%....And The Minute Men Endorsed by the govt....and employers enforced.

Just do these things, and NO non-compassionent mass deportation needs to take place....The problem will gradually reverse itself. Once this has been accomplished I would support enough worker programs to supplement American workers only as needed along with normal legal immigration. American Workers would come first.

This ‘Donor rebellion’ is the greatest thing since the ‘Boston Tea Party’........

JEB you were a great Governor, you should have quit while you were ahead. Perhaps this will assist you in seeing where the PEOPLE stand.

The Washington Times reports the RNC has fired all 65 of its telephonic fund raisers because the majority of the “contributors” they contact tell then solicitors (sic. GOP) they will contribute NADA. As is evident, the statements are based on the illegal immigrant situation. http://washingtontimes.com/national/20070531-050131-2781r.htm

(Since the GOP lost both houses, the GOP and DIMs are posturing to claim it was over IRAQ, none mentioned the illegal alien situation.)

Also, I think it is MinutemanHQ (?) that is forming PACs to defeat incumbent GOP senators who vote FOR in their next re-election primary! Hopefully the PACs expand to the DIM senators as well. I love it when a plan comes together.

“...immigration reform reinforces the rule of law in a practical and fair way. Today, those in the country illegally live and work without penalty. Doing nothing is the real amnesty.”

No it doesn’t...Immigration reform complicates the problem...

The solution is NOT reform...The solution is enforcement! Right now! Not tomorrow, right this second...

We already have the law(s)...Having the conviction to instruct aggressive enforcement of these laws is the solution...And having an agressive deportation follow through is icing on the cake!

Sure, you will not get everyone... But the trickledown effect will be tremendous...

If this “reform/compramise” deal gets passed, I believe it will be up to all of us to make sure every single elected official pro or against this bill be tossed out of D.C.

The pro supporters for obvious reasons, and the naysayers for failing to pull every possible procedure to stop it...

Maybe then we’ll get the kind of people in office who will provide the principled representation we’ve been trying to get in there for years...They probably won’t want to stay in there for long, so we better have a good bullpen of folks waiting to fill the gaps...

This is just too serious not to have the conviction to be prepared to do what is required to protect this country, even from the tyranny of good intentions!

Why do “conservatives” sound more anti-business and pro-minimum wage than Rats when it comes to Mexican labor? Where are labor intensive businesses going to find workers if all the Mexicans are deported??

Not every business is like Rush’s who can get interns to work for free.

“Why do “conservatives” sound more anti-business and pro-minimum wage than Rats when it comes to Mexican labor? “

Conservatives seek to “conserve” something. In the American political lexicon, it means conserving the United States of America at the very least.

You, on the other hand, stand with the enemies of the Republic.

That’s the part these guys don’t get - no one has any confidence that regardless what border enforcement is provided by the bill that it will be enforced any more than the laws that are in the books now are enforced.

That’s why anyone that wants border control must insist that they prove they will do that by actually doing it. Then and only then should we talk about the other aspects of the immigration problem.

The way the bill is written now sounds more like a benefit package for the illegals than an enforcement bill. They’re going to get rights and benefits that citizens don’t get!

What makes you think all the Mexicans are coming the US to "work"??

Many come because they know they can take advantage of welfare programs, get free healthcare, use our public schools, etc., etc. Over 100,000 illegal aliens get welfare checks in LA county alone.

The so-called "cheap labor" ain't so cheap when add up true costs of hosting these illegal aliens.

If our ecomony truly does need more people we should be accepting people from all over the world. We could draw the best, brighest and most capable from every continent.

Why should the vast majority of new immigrants come from Mexico and other Latin American countries?

Probably because conservatives want our laws enforced and have some loyalty to this country.

There’s no reason we should have to subsidize your Mexican labor force, and pay all the social costs you dump on the rest of us. Raise your wages if you need to attract American workers. If you can’t, or won’t, then the market is telling you your business isn’t competitive.

Why should we subsidize you any more than the thousands of other businesses that have gone under? Where is it written that you deserve to stay in business, and to do so you should be allowed to bend any laws you find inconvenient?
