Bush urges for $30 billion to fight AIDS in Africa
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON - President Bush urged Congress on Wednesday to authorize an additional $30 billion to fight AIDS in Africa over five years, doubling the current U.S. commitment.
The money would provide treatment for 2.5 million people under the President's Emergency Program for AIDS Relief, Bush said.
Through March 31, the program has supported treatment for 1.1 million people in 15 countries, including more than 1 million in Africa, he said. The program's original five-year mandate, which called for spending $15 billion, expires in September 2008 and Bush asked Congress to renew it.
"When I took office, an HIV diagnosis in Africa's poorest communities was usually a death sentence. Parents watched their babies die needlessly because local clinics lacked effective treatments," the president said.
White House press secretary Tony Snow said the specific goals for the next five years call for treatment of 2.5 million people, prevention of more than 12 million new infections and the care of more than 12 million people, including 5 million orphans and children.
Bush also announced that his wife, Laura, will visit four African countries that have benefited from the U.S. program and report back to him on her findings. The trip will take place June 25-29.
The president's announcement comes before next week's annual summit of industrialized nations in Heiligendamm, Germany. Germany is pledging to make Africa a central issue and is calling for more aid, further debt relief and improved financial oversight.
not that we want to ignore Aids, but haven't there been billions already spent and as long as you have willing and eager AIDS patients spreading it to others, what's the use.....
And exactly how does this promote the general welfare of the United States?
How about we drop leaflets all over the country that say in 43 different languages to “STOP F@#$%^&!” and cut off ALL aid.
If those people are having a hard time getting past Darwin then maybe we should stop holding their noses above the water.
Where’s my monthly request for tax dollars? It should’ve arrived by now.
LOL!!.....yeah, sure, Jorge : )
Carl Rove doesn’t understand why Reagan is popular now.
Great. It’s not like the taxpayers could use the $30 billion or anything.
I hate to say it, but I hope thet Kucinich and the nutroots actually impeach the guy. He is the biggest spending president of all time. He is destroying the party, and it would be a good thing if he would just go away.
How about spending that 30 billion for BORDER ENFORCEMENT? Wake up GW!
Dubya enjoys spending those increased revenues. Big government Republicanism at its finest.
Turning out to be one of the worst Presidents in my lifetime ( Truman , Eisenhower , Kennedy , Johnson , Nixon , Ford , etc...) . Only Carter has him beat , and not by much .
He is the Republican Jimmy Carter.
It’s time for a tax revolt.
Next job I get is for ‘cash’ only.
He said that the $6 billion or so that it would take to build a fence along the entire Mexican border would be too expensive.
Seriously.
The “W” bumpersticker came off my window this morning. I’ve had enough of this RINO.
It’s your own fault, you keep letting him talk to Blair. . . . . .
Did a similar thing-- "My heroes have always been cowboys" with Mr. Bush and Ronald Reagan.
Guess whose photo I cut off with a razor blade?
Enough is enough.
I've heard all the excuses, and I am just not buying them any more.
I can't wait for them all to be gone, and I want my 2 votes back, too...
Can’t anyone in the Republican Party stand up to this spending machine?
By the way, most of this money will probably go to Muslims.
‘By the way, most of this money will probably go to Muslims.’
Don’t be so silly. Muslims don’t have AIDS. You can’t catch it from a goat.
$15 billion is already way too much.
“You cant catch it from a goat.”
That’s “baaaahhhhd”.
I just can’t even comment anymore on this. Voted for him twice. Sure, lets just give 5 trillion per year to African aids.
A: It won’t do a damn thing
B: We can live in mud huts and know we ‘did something’.
I think it was late february or march that he gave the order and we started shopping for "friendly countries" to put bases in.......is this money really just out there to pay off who ever allows us in?
Just a thought
This is a good chunk of a Mars trip.
Just makes me utterly sick all the money that is wasted overall when we could be doing so much for humanity to reach for the stars.
“President Bush urged Congress to authorize an additional $30 billion to fight AIDS in Africa...”
“The money would provide treatment for 2.5 million people...”
Treatment for AIDS.......
typically drugs right?
$30 thousand million wealth transfer to big pharma is more accurate.
Have I been blind? Has this hatred aroused for Democrats been simply a diversion to keep me from seeing the nation disolved in front of me?
I'm extremely disconcerted over the whole thing right now. I mean, we're way better off without those maniacle idiots Gore and Kerry in charge, but did we simply slow the march down for destruction as a nation instead of halting it altogether?
Seems like it this morning.
I'm looking at the GOP right now and they don't appear to be anything like I hoped they were. Can conservatives stand alone? I think we're compelled to act via one of the larger parties, but maybe that time is over. We've been cast aside as it is.
Hey Geroge, quit spedning my MONEY.
Damn G.O.P. isn’t any better then the damn dems.
Roveism in a nutshell.
That's how it looks to me.
I'll support individual politicians ( see tagline ) but my days of giving even one crummy dollar to the GOP are done.
IIRC..when BUsh first announced his program, some Dems “complained” that it should have ben MORE $$$. Bush replied that the mdedical infrastructure in Africa was so bad, that it couldn’t handle more funds..IOW...any more $$$ would have just been wasted. So what’s happened in a few short years to change this?
That's how I recollect it, too... saw speculation ( here? LGF? ) in other comments that this is just greasing the skids for our placing more military assets in Africa.
If Bush sends our troops into Darfur, heck, I’d vote to impeach him..
I'd help you. It's a damned bloody mess, all of a sudden- chaos everywhere. Even my ( former Democrat ) wife sees through the sham and fraud of "the AIDS crisis." Her reply yesterday when seeing this "billions for AIDS" headline was too X-rated to repeat here, but let's say it was along the lines of "don't have anal sex and share infected needles, and you won't have much of a problem with AIDS...no billion$$$ are required..."
Your wife is wrong in one area..the vast majority of HIV/Aids in Africa is spread via heterosexual ( and vaginal ) unprotected sex with prostitutes..that was the whole point of Bush’s initial program..condoms and basic education would be highly effective in stopping the apread, if, IF there was a government infrastructure to handle it..I once read somewheres that an example of the dilemma would be..”imagine if you had a group of armless people stranded without food , and you airdropped them cans and can openers..”
Good point- especially about the cans...
Gee
If we can spend 30 billion to fight aids in SA
Why can’t we spend 30 billion to close borders, find and arrest Employers who willingly hire Illegal Aliens, and find and deport said aliens?
Dear Jorge,
Here’s the new slogan to fite AIDS in Africa.
“Don’t stick it in there”
Please send payment to BigDaddy_TX in the amount of $29.9B
George and Laura have chutpah to quote scripture to steal our
children's money for them to "feel good" and "work their way to heaven"If they a need to give much let them take it out of their pocket.
Don't make me tithe are their church of paganism.
NAsbU Luke 12:48 ...... From everyone who has been given much, much will be required;
....or, chillingly, in a political context:
from each according to his means, to each according to his ability?
WOW !
I wish he’d just shut his Mexican pie-hole, already.
