:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
British Intelligence: Al-Qaida Expanding
-Full Story-

British intelligence officials said they believe that al-Qaida has a secure base in Pakistan's Waziristan region and is planning terrorist operations.

The group is reaching out to Muslims in North Africa, The Telegraph reported. Last year, the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat, an Algerian terrorist group, merged itself into al-Qaida, a move announced by Osama bin Laden's chief lieutenant, Ayman al-Zawahiri, in a tape promising action against the "apostates" in the Algerian government and "the treacherous sons of France."

Al-Qaida is also believed to be planning expansion into Lebanon and Syria, the newspaper report said.

CDC Investigating Sick Passengers (Miami, FL - 6/12/07)

MIAMI (AP) -- Federal health authorities were responding Tuesday to reports that 11 people were ill on a flight from Mexico to Miami International Airport.

The Aeromexico flight from Merida, Mexico, landed at the airport and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was meeting with authorities in Miami to assess the situation, said Von Roebuck, a CDC spokesman. He had no further details.

Airport spokesman Marc Henderson could not confirm the illnesses. He said the plane landed at about 1:10 p.m.

“Sick passengers allowed to continue on”
Associated Press - June 12, 2007 3:33 PM ET

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “MIAMI (AP) - Health officials have now released nine passengers who were ill on a flight from Mexico to Miami today.

Initially, authorities reported eleven sick passengers on the Aeromexico flight from Merida. But a spokesman for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says nine were ill, with gastro-intestinal-type symptoms.

None was hospitalized.

An airline spokesman says it must have been something they ate before leaving Mexico, since no food is served on the flight.”

Iran to make U.S. “regret” detention of Iranians

1938 Alert. “Iran to make U.S. ‘regret’ detention of Iranians-FM,” by Fredrik Dahl for Reuters (thanks to Mackie):

TEHRAN, June 12 (Reuters) - Iran will make the United States “regret” its detention of five Iranians in Iraq since early this year, Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said on Tuesday.
Iran says the five Iranians detained by U.S. forces in the northern Iraqi city of Arbil in January are diplomats and has demanded their release. U.S. officials say they were involved in supporting militants inside Iraq.

“We will make the Americans regret their ugly and illegal action against the Islamic Republic of Iran’s consulate in Arbil, Iraq, and the abduction of the five Iranian diplomats,” Mottaki said, according to the state broadcaster’s Web site.

Mottaki said the Foreign Ministry had “put on its agenda a series of widespread actions against these unlawful and illegal actions that are in contradiction with all international conventions,” the ISNA news agency said, without giving details.

The issue has fuelled tension between the two old foes at a time of a worsening standoff over Iran’s disputed nuclear programme, which the West suspects is aimed at making atom bombs. Tehran says its programme is peaceful.

Further souring relations, Iran is holding three Iranian-Americans on security-related charges. Tehran has dismissed any suggestions their cases might be linked to the five Iranians held in Iraq.

Eleven Terrorists Held; Bomb-Making Factory Seized in Iraq

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, June 12, 2007 – Coalition forces detained 11 suspected terrorists during operations targeting al Qaeda in Iraq operations in the Baghdad area today.

In operations yesterday, Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers seized a bomb-making factory, along with another large weapons cache while on patrol in the eastern portion of the Rashid district of the Iraqi capital.

Troops from Company A, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, and Company A, 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, discovered the factory, a complex of small buildings deep in the thick palm groves of East Rashid.

The find consisted of one vehicle wired and loaded with explosives, 54 82 mm mortars, 27 155 mm artillery shells, one 500-pound bomb, 64 anti-tank mines, two 200-pound bombs, three 100-pound bombs, 30 130 mm projectiles, 30 hand grenades, 200 artillery boosters, 10 40 mm rounds, 300 5-gallon cans of nitric acid used in homemade explosives, and 1,500 anti-personnel mines. Troops also found enough wiring and bomb-making material to create more than 300 improvised explosive devices.

In a separate cache found near the complex, an additional 125 5-gallon containers of nitric acid were found. Three other vehicles were found wired as car bombs, but did not contain explosives.

Elsewhere in Iraq, Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers, in cooperation with Iraqi security forces, conducted a raid in the western Baghdad neighborhood of Hateen on June 10, uncovering a cache of bomb-making materials and capturing a terrorist suspect believed to be linked to al Qaeda in Iraq.

Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 32nd Field Artillery Regiment, attached to 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, caught the alleged al Qaeda member and found about 500 boxes of toilet bowl cleaner and 20 boxes of circuit breaker covers, which can be used to build improvised chemical weapons.

In other Iraq operations, an insurgent detonated himself in a suicide car bomb near the Iraqi highway patrol headquarters east of Tikrit on June 10. Fourteen Iraqi policemen were killed in the attack.

In addition, Iraqi army and coalition force soldiers fired at and used attack helicopters to repel insurgents firing from inside the Al Hussiniyah mosque in Old Baquba on June 9.

Islamist Forum Debates the Fate of Bin Laden
By Abdul Hameed Bakier

(Added June 12, 2007)

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “In response to an article posted in an Islamist internet forum entitled “Bin Laden...The Puzzling Disappearance,” forum users spent a week discussing the possible reasons behind the disappearance of Osama bin Laden from the international spotlight (http://www.tajdeed.org , May 20). The article was authored by the user “Shab,” a member of the Tajdeed forum since 2002, who argued that bin Laden has historically been the director, guide and leader of al-Qaeda since its establishment. Shab asserted that bin Laden was in control of the Islamic leadership as well as al-Qaeda operatives abroad, citing the example of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who was appointed by bin Laden as the amir of Iraq. Yet, Shab pointed out that the disappearance of bin Laden for the last year and a half and the frequent surfacing of his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri, have raised speculation about al-Qaeda’s attempts to fill the void created by bin Laden’s absence from the international arena. The following three issues were discussed by forum users in response to the post:”

“Iran cranking up uranium enrichment capability: diplomats”
by Michael Adler Tue Jun 12, 1:13 PM ET

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “VIENNA (AFP) - The UN atomic agency thinks Iran could have 8,000 centrifuges enriching uranium by December, a significant rise in nuclear capability likely to fuel fears that Tehran seeks nuclear weapons, diplomats said Tuesday.

“The concern is that they will have a sensitive number of centrifuges without having resolved the question marks surrounding the history of Iran’s programme,” a diplomat close to the watchdog International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said.

“It becomes more sensitive the more they have. It becomes a greater proliferation concern,” the diplomat told AFP.

The diplomat said IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei has been telling political leaders in private conversations that Iran was making “steady progress” in uranium enrichment and shows no sign of slowing down.

“ElBaradei is saying that Iran will have 8,000 centrifuges running if the current pace (of installation) continues” at its enrichment plant in Natanz, the diplomat said, adding that, from a proliferation point of view, ElBaradei was becoming “increasingly concerned.”

ElBaradei had Monday told an IAEA meeting here that the “brewing confrontation” with Iran over its atomic ambitions “must be defused.””

ICE arrests suspected key player in alien and drug smuggling network
Tornillo-based organization at one time allegedly smuggled 100 people a day

EL PASO, Texas - U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Office of Investigations special agents Friday arrested a man believed to be one of masterminds of an area criminal network that has smuggled people and drug loads into the U.S. for at least the past five years.

Julian Juvenal Vera-Valencia, 30, was arrested Friday in his Tornillo, Texas, home. He made his initial appearance in federal court today and has been criminally charged with aiding and abetting illegal aliens to enter the U.S. for financial gain, conspiring to smuggle aliens, conspiring to possess a controlled substance with intent to distribute, possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and importation of a controlled substance. Agents with U.S. Border Patrol, a division of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), participated in the investigation and arrest.

Vera-Valencia, a U.S. citizen, is being held in the El Paso County Detention Facility with no bond.

The Vera-Valencia organization has operated in the Tornillo area for at least the past five years, allegedly moving as many as 100 illegal aliens a day. Vera-Valencia has also been linked to four marijuana seizures since September 2004.

The smuggling organization was known to illegally smuggle people into the U.S. from various South and Central American countries, and at least in one instance, from Poland. The average smuggling fee was $2,100 per alien. The network smuggled men, women and children.

After smuggling the aliens in and around the Tornillo area, the Vera-Valencia group was known to move them to drop houses throughout the area, including El Paso. There the aliens would wait to be transported to various U.S. cities. According to court documents, the guides would provide little, if any, food and water to the aliens. In some instances, the smugglers allegedly charged aliens for food. One Tornillo drop house used by the Vera-Valencia smuggling organization had neither electricity nor running water.

Roberto G. Medina, special agent in charge of the ICE Office of Investigations in El Paso, said: “ICE will not tolerate criminal networks, such as this one, to use our border to profit from their illegal activity. Our special agents are committed to dismantling these smuggling organizations bringing their leaders to justice.”

Bush: Lessons of Communism Apply in Confronting Terrorism Today

By Donna Miles
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, June 12, 2007 – Lessons of the Cold War are important, because the same hatred that led to millions of people’s deaths during the 20th century is still at work today in the world, President Bush said today as the dedication of the new Victims of Communism memorial here.

Bush lauded the new memorial in the U.S. capital as a lasting tribute to an estimated 100 million innocent men, women and children whose lives were cut short by imperial communism.

They include innocent Ukrainians starved to death during Josef Stalin’s great famine, Russians killed in his purges, and Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians loaded onto cattle cars and deported to Soviet death camps, the president said. Others were Chinese killed during the Cultural Revolution, Cambodians slain in Pol Pot’s killing fields, East Germans shot attempting to scale the Berlin Wall, Poles massacred in the Katyn Forest, and Ethiopians slaughtered during the Red Terror. Still others were Mosquito Indians murdered by Nicaragua’s Sandinista dictatorship and Cubans who drowned in a desperate effort to escape tyranny.

“We’ll never know the names of all who perished,” Bush said today. “But at this sacred place, communism’s unknown victims will be consecrated to history and remembered forever.”

Bush said the new memorial helps ensure that future generations remember the crimes of the 20th century to ensure they’re never repeated.

“In this hallowed place, we recall the great lessons of the Cold War,” he said. One lesson is that “freedom is precious and cannot be taken for granted.” Another lesson: “Evil is real and must be confronted.” A third lesson: “Given the chance, men commanded by harsh and hateful ideologies will commit unspeakable crimes and take the lives of millions.”

These lessons are important to remember, Bush said, “because the evil and hatred that inspired the death of tens of millions of people in the 20th century is still at work in the world.”

That hatred showed its face on Sept. 11, 2001, when more than 3,000 Americans died during terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pa., he said.

“Like the communists, the terrorists and radicals who attacked our nation are followers of a murderous ideology that despises freedom, crushes all dissent, has expansionist ambitions, and pursues totalitarian aims,” he said.

And the similarities go beyond hatred, Bush said. “Like the communists, our new enemies are dismissive of free peoples, claiming that those of us who live in liberty are weak and lack the resolve to defend our way of life,” he said. “And like the communists, the followers of violent Islamic radicalism are doomed to fail.”

Bush said it’s important that people recognize these comparisons and heed the lessons imperial communism left behind.

“By remaining steadfast in freedom’s cause, we will ensure that a future American president does not have to stand in a place like this and dedicate a memorial to the millions killed by the radicals and extremists of the 21st century,” he said.

Meaning of ‘jihad’ key in Padilla case

Does the meaning of “jihad” determine whether or not he was hoping to set off a dirty bomb? From The Associated Press (thanks to the Constantinopolitan Irredentist):

MIAMI — Defense attorneys in the Jose Padilla terrorism support trial are going to great lengths to suggest to jurors that jihad is not necessarily Muslim holy war and that mujahedeen could just as easily be freedom fighters as terrorists.

The meaning of words, especially Arabic words, is center stage as federal prosecutors play hours of FBI telephone intercepts involving Padilla and two other defendants charged with participating in an Islamic extremist support network....

The legal battle about definitions goes to the heart of the defense argument that what Padilla, Adham Amin Hassoun and Kifah Wael Jayyousi were doing from 1994 to 2001 was not supporting terrorism, but providing humanitarian aid to oppressed and persecuted Muslims worldwide.

Prosecutors, however, must show the trio were involved in violence — that the “jihad” they were fighting involved killing and armed struggle.

“Muhammad is No 2 in boy’s names”
Helen Nugent and Nadia Menuhin

“Explore The Times Book of Names and discover what your name says about you”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Muhammad is now second only to Jack as the most popular name for baby boys in Britain and is likely to rise to No 1 by next year, a study by The Times has found. The name, if all 14 different spellings are included, was shared by 5,991 newborn boys last year, beating Thomas into third place, followed by Joshua and Oliver.

Scholars said that the name’s rise up the league table was driven partly by the growing number of young Muslims having families, coupled with the desire to name their child in honour of the Prophet.

Muhammad Anwar, Professor of Ethnic Relations at Warwick University, said: “Muslim parents like to have something that shows a link with their religion or with the Prophet.””

FBI Investigates Possible Threat Against Davis-Besse Nuclear (Washington)
June 12, 2007

OAK HARBOR -- The FBI is investigating a possible threat against the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station near Oak Harbor. Ottawa County Sheriff Bob Bratton says he called the bureau to report the threat on Monday.

Bratton says a waitress in a Port Clinton restaurant overheard two men talking about the nuclear power plant on Sunday. She told police one of the men wrote "boom" on a napkin. Bratton says the waitress told police the men were "arab-looking."

Patrols have been increased at the plant, but a spokeswoman for First Energy, the owner of the plant, says local authorities don't think the threat is credible. The FBI continues to investigate.

Here’s another detail:

“Port Clinton police Detective Bob Case said a note was written on a napkin with the word ‘boom’ and a depiction of a power plant, not necessarily Davis-Besse.”

“Mexican politician slain in city”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A Mexican politician was shot dead as he drove down a main city road in Monterrey, police said.

Gunmen opened fire on Mario Cesar Rios, a deputy from the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), as he passed near the Municipal Palace.

The 44-year-old died after being taken to hospital, officials said.

The shooting is the latest in a surge of violence from suspected drugs gangs, which has led President Felipe Calderon to send troops to several states.

Mr Rios was believed to have received death threats, an official for the northern state of Nuevo Leon prosecutor’s office told the AFP news agency.

“In the last days Rios told us that he was going to ask for time off because he had received death threats, and he was planning on leaving Mexico with his family,” he said.”

“CRIME: BEDLAM IN VAUGHAN
Sleepy burb rattled by chase, shootout
Robber attempts to hold up jewellery store, grabs two hostages and takes on police with pellet gun”
ALEX DOBROTA
June 13, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Monday at noon, few shoppers other than Catholic school students on lunch break bustled around Promenade Mall, in a tony part of Vaughan, north of Toronto. Soft rock music greeted store clerks punching in for what was shaping up as a quiet afternoon shift.

At a nearby school in a predominantly Jewish neighbourhood, Grade 4 pupils were basking in the midday sun during an outdoor gym class.

And, across the schoolyard’s fence, landscape workers repaired the gardens of well-to-do homeowners.

But the suburban idyll was shattered when a man armed with a pellet gun burst into one of the mall’s jewellery stores. He started a skirmish with police that sent students into a lockdown as pellets whizzed in the schoolyard. And he took two hostages from a nearby house, leading officers in a high-speed chase that rattled the sleepy quarter.

No one was injured and both hostages escaped. Still, the botched robbery strained the nerves of residents, school staff and mall employees, few of whom had heard of crime in the neighbourhood apart from the occasional theft.

Police arrested a 30-year-old man, Quincy Cave, with a history of run-ins with the law. Mr. Cave now faces 30 charges including various weapons offences, breach of recognizance, and possession of marijuana.”

Muslim men sodomize a Pakistani Christian youth
Mother faces threats to lose her job

By Sheraz Khurram Khan
Special Correspondent for ASSIST News Service in Pakistan

MANDI BAHAWALDIN, PAKISTAN (ANS) — A Christian youth was critically manhandled and sodomized by several unidentified Muslim men on the night between June 2 and 3 rd after he picked up a quarrel with his Muslim age fellow while playing Cricket in a play ground near District Headquarter (DHQ) Hospital MandiBhawaldin, ANS has learnt.

The trouble for 16-year-old Christian man, Imran Masih started when his Muslim friend, Naveed called him by the words “ Essai and Choora,” the bywords for Pakistani Christians used often by the Muslims to disgrace them.
Not knowing that his protest against the unwelcome language would make his position more vulnerable, the youth expressed his anger in a bid to stop Naveed from using the offensive language against him. This triggered a physical altercation between them. Naveed’s father, Muhammad Sadique, an ambulance driver of the DHQ Mandibahwaldin as well as the private driver of the Medical Superintendent, Amjad Iqbal arrived at the scene of incident and took the Christian youth to his home under the pretext of “reconciliation”.

As the Christian youth entered Sidique’s drawing room several Muslim men, who were waiting for their “victim” started forcing the minor boy to convert to Islam. Imran did not knuckle under the pressure and refused to embrace Islam. This angered the Muslim men and they started thrashing Imran with kicks and fists while some even bit him at his chest and other parts of his body to bully him into submission.

The Rays of Development (ROD), a non-governmental organization that investigated the case told ANS that most of the assailants were drunk.

“They threw liquor on his face and slapped and kicked him before subjecting him to sexual abuse”, Farhan Mazhar , Chairman of the ROD told ANS.

He went on to say that the Muslim men tucked his mouth in a sofa and stood on his hands and feet.

Later, they subjected him to sexual abuse one by one, he added.

The Muslim men allegedly continued to bugger the Christian youth throughout the night between 2 nd and 3rd June and threw the unconscious youth in the street outside their house.

Imran was picked up by his family members the next day.

“Imran could not move any part of his body. He was not in his senses. We wondered what had happened to him, “ Imran’s family members told ROD.

The youth revealed the traumatic incident to his family when he restored his senses after some time.

Imran’s mother, Kaneez bibi, who is a janitor at the hospital took his son to the Medical Superintendent of District Headquarter Hospital Mandi Bhawal Din for medical examination but he told her she was lying and showed him the door.

When the family approached the City Police Station Mandi Bahawldin for lodging a Police First Information Report (FIR) the police used dilly-dallying tactics and told them they should first obtain the Medical report.

The family members of the victim told the ROD that the hospital authorities and the Police kept them shuttling from the hospital to the police station and vice versa.

Imran’s family members further told ROD that the Police have been pressuring them for reconciliation. The high-ups of local district administration, and some local members of the provincial assembly Punjab are allegedly forcing the Christian family not to file the FIR. They threatened them with dire consequences if they did not change their mind, the ROD told ANS.

The police filed a fake theft report against Imran wherein he has been accused of stealing cash worth Rs 50,000 (US$ 833.3) and a mobile phone.

The ROD told the ANS that the police did file a report number 82 but have not filed FIR against the Muslim men who manhandled and abused the Christian youth sexually.

The accused are yet to be brought to the book despite the passage of a week. The incident has only come as a strain on the budget of the poor Christian family. After they are shunned treatment from government hospital the family is buying basic medicines like painkillers from the private chemists.

The writer is a freelance journalist based in Pakistan.
