I read all the way through this turgid article, with rising fury and rising gorge. The idea that ANY number of the purported positive aspects of this bill can compare to the immediate and unconditional amnesty for every single one of these invaders is disgusting, and Mr. Barnes is fully aware of that fact - he just wants to sell us another load of fertilizer, but I ain’t buying.

All I want is deportation,no more "if you're born here you're a citizen...regardless",and *real* border controls. Nothing more...and nothing less.

Which part of "no" don't you understand,Fred? The "n" or the "o"?

I have always liked Fred Barnes. Sometimes I think he spends a little too much time with the liberal press. But as one of the few conservatives in the press it is inevitable. This is a good article with content. I admit to reading/skimming. He argues this bill, or something like it, is about the best conservatives can get. He may be right.

But who is telling liberals that they should give in and compromise? What does motivate liberals? Many conservatives think it is a transparent search for more Democratic party voters. Maybe. But Democrats can’t come out and say so. What rational do Kennedy and others use? Will they resort to name-calling and accuse us of racism, nativism, anti-immigration attitudes, anti-Americanism, etc.? If these are their only arguments, Fred and Mort and others should call them on it. Should we respond to the President's bullying? Should we respond to Fred's argument that we must compromise? Why? We have valid concerns for America. We have valid concerns about poor performance on this issue by politicians. We have valid concerns about amnesty. What valid concerns do Kennedy and company have that we should consider? Are there any?

From the article: “Admittedly, Washington has a credibility problem on border security. Illegals have been sprinting across the border for decades, all but unimpeded. So it’s understandable most Americans don’t trust Washington to choke off the flow of illegals and cut it to an acceptable trickle. Here again, the bill can be improved, notably by adopting a suggestion of columnist Charles Krauthammer that success in securing the border be quantified—he suggested a 90 percent reduction in illegal immigration—before the trigger is activated.”

Barnes is the crazy one here. The way that would be quantified IF quantifying were added to the bill, would be the same way they measure this today, by counting the number of illegals detained. Less detained, less coming across. (It’s a Stupid Government Trick,)

Therefore, to accelerate the trigger, the administration would simple stop detaining illegals. Poof - trigger met.

Barnes is smoking funny cigarettes.

Any premise that we are missing the "good" parts of the bill ignores completely that if Democrats take power, they will not enforce or will ignore provisions of the bill that they don't like. There is no way in HELL that the citizens of this nation can trust anything that the politicians do or say, based on past immigration bills, to get us to believe that this will be anything different. Put it to rest Barnes, they have fooled the people so many times now that there's no room for any more lipstick on the pig.

Fred Barns is a Bush sock puppet and therefore a shill for the pro-criminal axis pushing amnesty. He’s what we used to call a “Rockefeller Republican” but the more liberal strain that should now be called the “Bush Republicans”.

I have to say, people on here who say Fred Barnes is a liberal are wrong. He is a pretty reliable conservative, and so is Jon Kyl.

You can say Barnes and Kyl are fools, morons or idiots for not thinking through the real-life consequences of passing this legislation.

Sometimes even smart guys get their pockets picked, get fooled in a business deal, or make a major miscalculation.

So say they are fools, but not liberals.

“Once in a life time chance to stop illegal immigration and enact sensible policies toward legal immigration” Anything Ted has his hands in is illegal! This Fred Barnes charactor is deaf, dumb, blind and stupid if he thinks we are going to believe this rubbish. Was the first Illegal Amnesty bill a sensible policy? Was it monitored and followed up (as we are being told it will be today) by any governement agency? Could you be more rediculous in your obersvation than you already are Fred? The answers my friend are not blowing in the wind they are in the 2008 elections and beyond! BE THERE OR WE CAN KISS THIS PLACE GOODBYE!

IIRC, Barnes also tried to sell the one that passed the Senate last year, but got stopped in the House.

At the top of the list of what conservatives can get is significantly beefed-up security along America's southern border.

Since when is a secure border negotiable? Why is it even held hostage to comprehensive immigration reform? A secure border is not a conservative issue, it is a matter of national security for all Americans. Barnes is such a transparent shill.

What’s the difference between Fred Barnes and the sun?

One is a hot ball of expanding gas.

The other is a minor star 93 million miles from earth.

He’s right, there is something to like about this bill... namely that it hasn’t passed yet. I personally don’t care what he finds to like about it. It’s like finding a puppy in a bed of rattlesnakes. The puppy’s ok, but it ain’t worth getting killed over.
