Anti-war Republican faces challenges from left and right

ELKTON, Md. (AP) --

Representative Wayne Gilchrest, a 16-year incumbent who was one of only two Republicans to vote earlier this year for a timeline for withdrawal from Iraq, is now facing challenges from the right and the left.

Baltimore County state Sen. Andrew Harris announced last month that he is planning to run for Gilchrest's seat. Once the second-ranking Republican in the Maryland Senate, Harris is considerably to the right of Gilchrest and says that Gilchrest's anti-war stance will cost him his job.

Meanwhile, Queen Anne's County State's Attorney Frank Kratovil, a Democrat and war opponent, plans to announce Monday he will seek the seat.

Gilchrest, who voted to authorize engagement in 2002, says his opinion is now much different, blaming the continuing violence on poor handling of the war by the Bush administration. The Republican says he is continuing to do his job in Congress and is not thinking about whether he is vulnerable or not.

Another seat that will probably go to a Democrat. Why not vote for a real Democrat instead of one wearing the pelt of a Republican?

"...blaming the continuing violence on poor handling of the war by the Bush administration."

For the sake of argument, let's accept this. Congressman Gilchrist is the answer then to leave and give a victory to the jihadis? Doing nothing in the 90's created huge momentum for the jihad movement. We will give them an even bigger boost, by accepting defeat. They won't stop, we will have to go back into the Middle East again, only that time, it will be under far worse and more difficult circumstances.

Congressman Gilchrist, if you now how to do it better, why aren't you pushing for improvements in fighting the war? You sound like a big whiner: "They're not doing it right. I'm going to take my ball and go HOME! Wah!

We don't need defeatists in the GOP, there are plenty among the Defeatocrats.

Unfortunately, the war isn’t the only thing Gilchrist has in common with the democrats. I hope it is an interesting primary!
