I live in Birmingham, in the Avondale neighborhood. The FBI stats show downtown safer than many posh neighborhoods south of town. Downtown is extremely safe. Most Birmingham neighborhoods, though, are rough & deadly. Highland Park, Forest Park, Glen Iris and Redmont Park all have million+ dollar homes. South Avondale & Crestwood are comparable to Hoover in safety & price.

If you decide to move outward beyond I-459 the Southern Bypass, be prepared for Houston & LA style commutes. Most people in Birmingham would rather pay $80.00 a week for a tank of gas than actually live in the city...and considering it’s becoming another Atlantic City or Detroit, you can’t really blame them. Again, downtown is extremely safe, and is becoming a HUGE loft/condo ritzy neighborhood
