Bigotry never goes away. When it becomes unfashionable, it goes underground and waits until a new hate group appears into which it can project its twisted sickness.
Racism, anti-Semitism, anti-Catholicism and anti-immigrant nativism are chronic infections in the American body politic. Rush Limbaugh singing his obscene tune "Barack the Magic Negro" is inviting prejudice and violence.
However, for pure irrational rage, the current crop of nativists are some of the worst to come along since the Ku Klux Klan of the 1920s or those God-fearing Protestants who burned convents in Boston in the 19th century.

"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
you are not a bigot for opposing ILLEGAL immigration
And if cluelessness isn't, it ought to be.
What a pantload of pure crap. Andrew Greeley's comparison of the two proves his total, pitiful detachment from reality.
From the other thread, where a further records check revealed he had previously been arrested on rape, burglary, robbery, disorderly conduct, battery, parole violations and failure to register as a sex offender, according to the release. Yuma Border Patrol has rough Monday.
Bigotry: Irrational suspicion or hatred of a particular group, race, or religion: intolerance, prejudice.
Then, isn't it bigotry to call people "nativists..." ?
P R O P A G A N D A
This is pure trash.
It’s the sheer numbers we worry about...plus the continual flouting of US laws. They’re here illegally and it’s part of the pie in the sky dream of a North American Union. Never mind that a good percentage of those rushing over the border harbor dreams of ‘reconquista’. (Worrying about American culture/values/English/laws is hardly bigotry and calling it that is a race baiting cheap shot and not worthy of the author.
Why is colluding with Mexico in the evil of ethnic cleansing praiseworthy? Will Andrew Greeley grieve for families of US citizens killed by illegals driving the wrong way on the highway or simply murdered by illegal criminals? Why doesn’t he move to Mexico and try to make it a better place to live? (Clean up endemic corruption, etc.. (Where’s my prozac.)
Am I saying that hatred for immigrants is a Nazi attitude? You bet I am! And in the objective order mortally sinful, too.
As I look through the mail, I wonder what these people fear. What terrible threat to their well-being do these poor peons represent? Hordes of infidel invaders perhaps -- just as my ancestors frightened the good citizens of Boston?
A billion or more people live in poverty. I think this author should let them all stay at his house to prove his compassion.
This op-ed is not only factually incorrect it is hateful.
Don’t you realize that when you assume that everyone who is perceptive enough to see that this amnesty bill is unfair and dangerous, is a racist, you show your own hypocritical bias?
I see this same hypocrisy in so many places: “Americans are stupid!” “Americans are arrogant!”
Don’t give in to the dark side of the Force, Luke!
Yes, bigotry IS always sinful. Opposition to criminal acts, however is NOT bigotry and NOT sinful. Those who oppose the immigration of hispanics because of their race or national origin are, in my opinion, bigoted and wrong. But that is NOT what most conservatives are troubled by. We oppose the illegal crossing of our borders, for whatever reason. It is a felony, and ignoring it is wrong.
I feel like I need to bath after reading that tripe.
I believe that immigration should be first and foremost for foreigners married to US citizens (as many have been married to soldiers) and for English-speaking foreigners who want to move here primarily out of preference for our culture and form of government. ...not hordes of foreign-language, overly subservient singles to suit dishonest employers. Too many immigrants who retain foreign cultures, languages and allegiances are more expensive for all of us to attempt to assimilate into American society.
Our immigration system was more based on family considerations and preferences for American culture in the past. Now it’s based more on third-world, overly subservient labor, abuse and vanities.
Father Andrew Greeley, S.J.
For you non-Catholics, that means he’s a Jesuit. For many of us Catholics, that means he’s a royal pain in the @ss.
Not unlike Father Robert Drinan, S.J. Google them both. Far-out, whacked-out liberal scolds.
Always wagging the scolding finger. Been doing this since the sixties, when he started out wearing turtlenecks, picking a banjo or geeetar, trying to, you know, REACH the urban young people.
Same old, tired old, liberal c-r-a-p. If someone disagrees with Fr. Greeley, he calls him/her a Nazi.
Nazi-shmazi nyah nyah nyah.
Take a powder, you worn out radical leftover!
I challenge you on your apparent definition of "conservative."
I stopped at the headline too, except I agree with it completely.
What nominal conservatives have said about Mexican immigrants -- and to them, they are all "illegals," for none has come forth to defend them in any way shape or form; clearly to these nominal conservatives anyone who isn't just like them is sub-human -- what they have said and implied is completely bigotted and inexcusable.
In NYC, one does not find churches crowded on Sunday with any race, let alone nice, clean republican white folks. And yet, there is a Parish in the Bronx, I am told by the Msgr., that has 9 Masses attended by 5000 Mexican immigrants on a given Sunday. I'd rather have them as neighbors and fellow citizens than someone who calls himself a conservative and gives the real ones such a bad name by his ignorance and refusal to govern his mouth or pen.
So, there, I've supported the two biggest thorns in the nominal conservative's side: Mexican immigrants and Catholics.
How did wanting our borders protected and wanting laws enforced get turned into being a nativist bigot?
Spell check says “nativist” isn’t a real word anyway.
Boy is this guy off the mark
What happened to the “Greeley Alert” warning???
Greeley is an idiot. Ask Greeley why to even bother having borders in his world. If illegal immigration is no different than legal immigration then borders are meaningless.
Since Greeley is a world citizen and not merely an American or Canadian (or whatever he is), let him go live in Africa, China or the Middle East so he can preach the good news there...
Greeley is a doofus, but I do sake some of his criticism to heart. Some of the stuff coming out of places like Laura Ingraham isn’t helpful. That kind of hateful rhetoric will only serve to obstruct our mission to enforce our borders and our laws. Being part Mexican, I obviously have enormous respect for Mexico. But there is a border between us.
Knowing he is morally right, he might do something stupid like burn covens.
Such hateful rhetoric will also drive Hispanic voters into the Democrat’s camp permanently.
It’s good to see another poster that is of Mexican ancestry here. I was starting to feel a little out of place
You want immigrants as neighbors and fellow citizens? You could move to Yuma.
Yuma Border Patrol has rough Monday
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1845044/posts
(snip)
The arrest came at the Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 8 at milepost 17 as agents were questioning a man who said he was lawfully admitted for permanent residence but did not have his immigration card.
A records check revealed a lengthy criminal history, including felony domestic violence, assault, criminal damage, possession of controlled substances and failure to appear, the patrol said. Additionally, he was prosecuted in federal court for entering the San Luis, Ariz., port of entry with a hidden illegal alien and a concealed handgun, according to the news release.
The suspect was transported to the Wellton station for processing and further investigation. During interviews, agents noticed various gang tattoos on his arms, body and legs. When questioned about the tattoos, the suspect said was he was a member of the “Sureños” gang, the release said.
He is being held pending prosecution on illegal entry into the United States, the release said.
The canal rescue came as agents were patrolling at 9 p.m. about two miles west of the Andrade, Calif., port of entry. An agent heard calls for help coming from the canal. Shining a spotlight in the canal, the agent saw a man in the water struggling to stay afloat. He immediately deployed a rescue device and pulled the man from the water, according to the news release.
After being rescued, the man asked for medical assistance and was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center. Agents performed records checks via radio and discovered the man had a criminal history, including seven prior deportations, the release said.
After being treated, the man was transported to the Yuma station for processing, where a further records check revealed he had previously been arrested on rape, burglary, robbery, disorderly conduct, battery, parole violations and failure to register as a sex offender, according to the release.
He is being presented for prosecution on illegal entry into the U.S. and illegal re-entry after deportation. He faces a fine and up to 10 years in prison, the release said.
They have cathedrals in Mexico, don’t they?
Whoever said that illegal immigrants were “inhuman”?
Wait, you did.
People who cross our borders illegally are illegal wherever they came from. Hence illegal - not “Mexican”.
LEGAL immigrants are always welcome to America!
Remove the log from your own eye before attending to the splinter in your friend’s. Hypocrisy alert!
You've linked being Catholic with accepting tens of millions of citizenship-stealing foreign nationals that are leaving failed states in search of the chance to make this country a failed state.
You obviously don't live in the neighborhoods that have been taken over by the illegal immigrants from down south. If you did, you'd know what it was like to have the schools flooded with people that refuse to learn any English (a teacher friend says that she is surprised that "there's anyone left in El Salvador..they're all here"). You'd see the hostility when you enter "their" neighborhood, see nothing but signs and posters in spanish, see the young toughs hanging around with the gang clothing and attitudes and realize that instead of coming here to become Americans, we have very large blocs of people that have no intention of leaving their old countries behind.
I'm glad that they're attending Mass. But that doesn't mean that they had any business breaking into this country and making it just like the old one they left. What kind of future are you allowing, just so you can enjoy a Spanish Mass?
“So, there, I’ve supported the two biggest thorns in the nominal conservative’s side: Mexican ILLEGAL immigrants and Catholics.”
That’s what you’re really saying, and it isn’t nice at all.
mrs.
A Catholic descendant of a LEGAL Spanish immigrant.
LOL, as if they’d vote GOP ever.
When you call other people names like bigot because they don’t agree with you and La Raza, they’re going to respond.
Even if you have “Mexican heritage!”
Mexico is a mess because of its culture, not because of the genetic makeup of its people.
And what does that have to with the article you posted?
Oh, another chance for you to throw the slur “bigot” out, nevermind.
Many here are attacking both legal and illegal immigrants because of their Hispanic culture. They treat Hispanics as if they’re not real Americans.
I was responding to the invisible hand’s post. Perhaps you missed it.
"Legal" through Bush's Shamnesty program is not fair. All illegals, regardless of race/origin, should be made to go back home and stand in line behind those already applying to enter the US under current laws.
No need for S1348, enforce the current laws instead!
You didn’t miss your chance, though, did you?
By the way, this bill will never become law.
Who?
No, they will have z-visas that have to be renewed every 4 years at $500 a pop. Most won't bother even getting a z-visa. Even fewer will pay the fines to pursue the path to full citizenship.
What have we gained other than making it easier for terrorists to get legal documents?
One billion in poverty, do they all have the right to immigrate to America? Why not? If 12 million is OK, why not 1 billion?
It's easy to be compassionate when you are spending someone else's money.
Here to start with: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1843422/posts
The first three paragraphs are simply an incitement to hate. Oddly enough, it is bigotry.
". . . right-thinking people . . ." < codebreak> Liberal elitist media. < /codebreak> The poll reports last week . . . done by The New York Times and CBS . . .
Yep, those are two sources which start with the answer they want, then design the poll to achieve it.
hating African-Americans was a sin 40 years ago (and it was and still is), then hating "illegals" is a sin today. Ever hear of "hate the sin, not the sinner"? Isn't that a Christian concept? Hating African Americans for being African Americans IS a sin. Hating illegals for being poor, or non-American, IS a sin. Hating the negative effects of illegals (crime, draining of social benefits away from U.S. citizens, etc.) on the U.S. is not a sin, it's common sense.
So death is an appropriate punishment for what is legally only a misdemeanor? No, but sometimes death is Nature's punishment for being stupid, or unprepared, or unlucky.
Yet every other American ethnic group waves the flag of its origins -- Poland, Greece, Italy, Sweden, Ireland, Denmark. Why deny that custom only to one group? Because he despises that group. < patiencewithstupiditymode>No, because an AMERICAN ETHNIC GROUP is a group of Americans with a common ethnic background, and they wave their flag to celebrate that. Illegals are illegals, and they wave their Mexican flag to thumb their nose at citizens, at our laws, and (in some cases) to promote "reconquista." < /patiencewithstupiditymode>
More hate mail affirms that the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness belong only to American citizens. Absolutely. And when the government did not recognize those rights, American colonists took steps to ensure it did. Mexican citizens are welcome to pursue their own course of action to ensure, "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" -- IN MEXICO.
. . . which is how Hitler started . . . Ahh, how predictable. Just about any time a liberal runs into opposition, the "Hitler and Nazi" card comes out. Hitler and the Nazis were not opposing illegal immigration, they were oppressing legitimate citizens who were obeying German laws. I don't see many illegals being gassed, or carted off to work camps, or burned, or buried in mass graves. See the difference? No, probably not.
The moral theology I learned said someone who was desperate for food could steal from the rich without sinning. Well, here we go -- stealing is not a sin? Hmm. Moral relativism. But when you take my tax money to support social programs for illegals, to increase law enforcement to protect citizens, to provide increased security for Americans who are threatened socially and economically, you are not stealing from a rich man -- you are stealing from little old middle-class ME. And I don't like it.
With all the abundance north of the border and all the poverty south of the border, I doubt very much that a generous God would find anything more than bravery in the souls of those who strive to improve the lives of their families. As long as you are invoking God's name, it begs the question -- who created the situation in the first place???
I saw the headline, looked to see the author, made this post, and went on cruisin’ for news. Greeley is a Leftist loser.
The headline screams...English as a Second Language is required.....
“Once S 1348 becomes law, they will all be legal” followed by name calling.’
That’s what they said after the last amnesty. When you reward breaking the law, you get more of the same. Why should these law breakers be moved to the head of the line above all the other people of the world?
