Luntz: Romney the Winner [6-5 debate]
YouTube ^ | 6-6-2007 | Luntz/Fox News

Posted on 06/06/2007 10:26:36 AM PDT by Swordfished

On FOX News, pollster Luntz declares Romney the winner and John McCain the loser.

Romney is 'off the charts' in positive reaction to his answer on faith Mormon faith. Good comments by typical voters. Luntz uses an interesting method that allows tracking of the reactions to the candidates in real time.

This is delicious. The highest, most off the chart positive reaction by Republicans and Independents EVER was the Mormon question. This is tangible PROOF that the Mormon question not only DOES NOT hurt him but in fact it HELPS HIM!

Ummm, care to comment FC? Or are we going to get a lecture about irrational Mormons or some other tripe?

This impressive response is to the question on supposedly his greatest weakness, The Mormon Thing.

This Luntz clip is likely causing significant consternation amongst the Dems, who have likely already directed the MSM to redouble their production of Get Mitt hit pieces. This is not a candidate they want to face.

he might make a good VP if he could guarantee MA’s elctoral votes.

I don't know about Massachusetts, but Romney can be instrumental in holding some of the close Bush states and flipping some of the others that went to Kerry in 2004, like Wisconsin, Michigan (Romney born and raised there and his father was the governor) and New Hampshire (where Romney has a home).

These close states are the ones on which to focus.

Close states in 2004:

Wisconsin, 0.38% Kerry
Iowa, 0.67% Bush
New Mexico, 0.79% Bush
New Hampshire, 1.37% Kerry
Ohio, 2.11% Bush
Pennsylvania, 2.50% Kerry
Nevada, 2.59% Bush
Michigan, 3.42% Kerry
Minnesota, 3.48% Kerry
Oregon, 4.16% Kerry
Colorado, 4.67% Bush

"Too bad for CNN since, according to Luntz, the average folks decided they liked Mitt the best anyway."

I was absolutely floored by that video clip because I went to bed believing this was the weakest Romney performance of the debates. It is amazing that people just really seem receptive to him, whether he has an off night or not. I'm positive CNN sees his appeal and that was driving a lot of their tactics in trying to tear him down--right down to the planted CNN-approved audience member question.

Next to fall with be Rudy, especially if Fred and Newt get in.

I don't agree at all. Despite this poll, I thought Rudy was the clear winner last night. Sure, I may disagree with some of his position, as I suspect many do, but he came across as some one in command. The man has a presence and a likeability that are well suited to the campaign - and let's face it, well suited to the Presidency.

If he can keep up that level, and not get bogged down in scandals, I think we've got our nominee, and our next President.

Romney? well, he might make a good VP if he could guarantee MA’s elctoral votes.

Wouldn't he have to flop back on abortion again?

Sadly, I think MA is a lost cause as far as the Republicans are concerned, but I think Romney would definitely be a winner in the barely blue states like Michigan (where he was born and raised), Iowa, etc. That's where we're going to win the election.

I know what you are saying.
Even on an off day, the weakest Mitt is still preferable to everyone else. : )

Could be and yes the barely Blue and barely red states need to be RED in order to win in "08.

find it really interesting that Romney is the one who has mostly been on the receiving end of the "attack dog" type of questions--both in this debate and in the last one. I have my theory on this. I think that CNN, being the liberal cheerleader it is, suspects that Romney could wipe the walls with whomever is the Democratic nominee

He's probably doing better in internal polls than the media wants to admit.

Rudy came across better than I would have liked. Although, he looked odd last night, almost feminine or sickly. I think he had too much makeup.

I do believe that Mitt Romney is pro-life. I also believe that he had to lie about it in order to become Massachusetts governor, and to challenge Fat Teddy for the Senate seat in 1994. I also believe that his church does not try to interfere with this process, otherwise, they’d have Harry Reid’s hiney on a platter.

Romney did outshine the field as Presidential. Others did not seem to rise above congressional candidates, except perhaps Huckabee and Paul.

"He's probably doing better in internal polls than the media wants to admit."

You could be right. The MSM seems to be in love with national polls, but national polls are all about name recognition. This is an automatic handicap for Romney when he's stacked up against well-known names like Giuliani, McCain and Thompson, but when you look at the polls on a state-by-state level, he's gained tremendous momentum. Why? Because in those states where he's out there making himself known on a personal level, he's connecting with his audiences in a big way and I think that's why the MSM is ignoring the state polling. Romney scares the pants off of the MSM and the Democrats.

“Ummm, care to comment FC?”

I never said I was arguing the 97% side of this, I’m arguing the 3-5% broken glass Christians who won’t vote.

I agree with what you said... In fact, it would be hard to believe that he would have ever been a strong idealogue for abortion. He's shown just the opposite in his personal life.

In fact, many men go through a lot of their life without deep convictions on the subject either way... but when something finally causes them to give it deep thought, they usually become strong proLife.

This impressive response is to the question on supposedly his greatest weakness, The Mormon Thing.

I will admit, that was an issue for me initially. That is no longer true. Once I gave it some logical thought I realized that although Romney and I have different theological beliefs, he and I have similar moral beliefs. He is one of the few candidates who has a moral code AND lives by it. It's refreshing.

My Mom was even more opposed to him a few months ago. As of today, she is thinking about voting for him. The objections don't stand up to fair reasoning.
