Pinned under a tree, 66-year-old man amputates own leg (When Trees Attack)
AP/sfgate ^ | June 6, 2007

Residents are pulling for a neighbor who was forced to amputate his left leg below the knee using pocket knives after a tree fell on him, pinning him for about 11 hours.

Al Hill, 66, was cutting trees on a property near the Big Dipper Mine last Friday when a tree fell on his leg and trapped him, authorities said. Alone in the woods and in an area where cellular phone service is spotty or nonexistent, Hill was forced to take the extreme measure to save himself.

Eventually, a neighbor in the area heard Hill's cries for help. Eric Bookey declined to talk about the events.

If I tried that, after I finished sawing through the last tendon, I’d look down and say “damn, wrong leg.”

The tree was getting even for global warming. . . . .

Trust me, that WILL be a serious comment by someone on the loony left.

Then you could sue yourself. I’m sure there’s an attorney out there who would take the case.

Same thing happened here in PA a few years ago.

The article said there is no electricity in a town of 200, 60 miles from the state capital. What's up with that?

It must not have been too long after he performed the amputation. That stinks.

Cutting trees large enough to pin you down is the kind of work that requires a team for safety.

Seems like I come across one of these stories every year or two. Just reading them makes me want to puke - I don’t know how these guys can find the determination and guts to actually cut off a limb. They have my respect and admiration - what fighters!

I agree as well, but as the story said, this guy is from a town with no electricity and few services. I’m guessing most of the residents are pretty indepedent, and otherwise pretty good at being independent.

Geez, Louise! He sawed through his own tibia with a pocket knife? The intact tibia is about 2” in diameter and solid bone. It must have already been fractured and he just cut through the soft tissue.

A 66 year old has more experience doing timber work than an 18 year old young buck.

I'm 57 and have cut down many dozens of large trees over the last 30 years clearing land to build my houses. The real work is the limbing and feeding the chipper.

True, but an 18-year-old is much less likely to experience a heart attack from physical exertion in the woods.

My real point was not the age of the worker but the importance of the buddy system.
