Democratic strategist Donna Brazile urged Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., to resign in an interview aired Wednesday on National Public Radio's News and Notes.
"I personally hope that he would do whats best for his family and his constituents and put his legal case before everything else and allow someone else to step up and represent that district," Brazile told NPR.
Jefferson represents the still vulnerable city of New Orleans and Brazile continued, "If theres one congressional district in America that needs a full time lawmaker focused and committed to the recovery of the Gulf Coast, its the second congressional district of Louisiana."
A federal grand jury delivered a 16-count indictment of Jefferson on Tuesday that includes charges of money laundering, racketeering, and obstruction of justice.
Brazile, who served as Vice President Al Gore's chief of staff during his 2000 presidential bid, said she's known Jefferson since she was an intern with the Louisiana state legislature.
"He's a hard worker, he's been a dedicated public servant, but this probe, these allegations are a distraction," Brazile said.
She said she believes the pressure on Jefferson to step down now will come from two sources: his colleagues on the Democratic side of Congress and also from the people back at home in New Orleans.
In the wake of the indictment, the House took initial steps that could lead to Jefferson's expulsion from Congress.
"I'm also pleading because of the residents of that great, wonderful city that needs his leadership, needs his attention. And right now he can not give them his full
I'm not playing this as a political game. I'm playing this personally because my own family and many other families in the Gulf Coast," Brazile said.
Is Brazile a relative of Ray Nagin? I’m just askin’...
“a hard worker and a dedicated public servant”? WTF? OK, all you other hard working, dedicated public servants with $90,000. squirrelled away in your freezer, raise your hands! Sounds to me like they just want to move his guilty ass out of the spotlight, let him make a deal, get off with a suspended 10-minute sentence, get Ray Nagin into his seat and carry on as usual.
They’re eating their own - enjoy it!
You youngsters won't get the reference to a famous professional wrestler of the 50's.
‘Brazile, who served as Vice President Al Gore’s chief of staff during his 2000 presidential bid, said she’s known Jefferson since she was an intern with the Louisiana state legislature.
“He’s a hard worker, he’s been a dedicated public servant, but this probe, these allegations are a distraction,” Brazile said. ‘
Maybe its just me, but I suspect there is something more behind Donna Brazile calling for him to resign.
Like she’s offended she didn’t get a cut of the bribery money....
Sounds like Donna loves the Party more than the people.
Donna Brazile is not elected person. But the fact that she is a liberal black lady I assume it will have some effect at least they are not all walking in lock step defending the corrupt Jefferson.
Maybe Jefferson should simply just move to Brazil?ha!
One of the greatest wrestlers of our time; Rickydozan.
Maybe she wants the seat.
>Like shes offended she didnt get a cut of the bribery money....<
I disagree. Donna is an endangered species. She’s a Dem who still possesses a shred of decency.
Let’s give her the benefit of the doubt.
Boy, that's a blast from the past! That was a Saturday night's entertainment: Roller Derby and Rasslin' from Cobo Hall. Channel 56 in Boston showed the stuff from Detroit instead of the WWWF (and Bruno Sammartino) for a number of years.
I agree with Mz Bazille.
But knowing her past, her racist outlook on everything, her sick politics: Hey Donna, STFU!
I never thougth I’d agree with her on ANYTHING!
The most disgusting aspect of this is that Jefferson has always been dirty and everybody in Louisiana has known about it. Newspaper editorials about him go back to the 80s when he was just a local pol.
In southern Louisiana graft and corruption rule. Several governors have tried to change things (namely Buddy Roemer) but they got nowhere. Hopefully, Bobby Jindal will win this year and will take another crack at it.
My Dad told me stories about his contracting days when he would get calls from government officers asking him to increase his supposedly sealed bids.
Louisiana is better now than it used to be, but it still is as corrupt as a lot of third world countries.
The inch-thick, 94-page indictment was handed up in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Va. If convicted on all charges, Jefferson could face a maximum prison term of 235 years.
‘I disagree. Donna is an endangered species. Shes a Dem who still possesses a shred of decency.
Lets give her the benefit of the doubt.’
Riiight, thats why they fired her butt for promoting false rumors about then VP Bush having an affair in 1988.
Cause she’s ‘too decent’.....
It would be hard to come up with a bigger crock of BS than that.
This is really something. Brazille is a dyed in the wool, yellow-dog Democrat and has been close to Dollar Bill for many years. Also, Landrieu said something in today’s T-P which was a wink short of a request for resignation. Its the begging of the end and death will come via a thousand cuts.
“Sounds to me like they just want to move his guilty ass out of the spotlight”
Donna Brazile is just part of the Democrat machine. She is reading the script the party has given her. She is high up enough in the party that the media will report her “opinion”. By having her chime in on this, Pelosi and Co. and free to say something like “we don’t feel it is appropriate to comment on this on-going investigation...blah. blah, blah”
Yep, with her saying this, it prevents 'whitey' from having to do it. It's all racial with African-American Democrats. Wait until Hillary finds that out when she says something desperate after Obama overtakes her in the polls...
This is garbage!
So what? This is nothing more than political kabuki. It's all political cover so the Dems can later say, "Yeah, we publicly called on our own - Jefferson - to resign". Where were all these Democrats a year ago when Jefferson was caught redhanded with cash in the freezer? Why didn't they call for his resignation then? Or where they secretly hoping Jefferson might somehow weather the storm?
It would have been sincere if Brazile had made this declaration a year ago, but now Brazile is actually trying to use this for all the political mileage they can get out of it. It's like a coward coming out from behind the family sofa and shooting an intruder who has already been shot dead by someone else in family and claiming he shot the intruder!
If I were Jefferson, I would hang in there until his party comes to drag me off! What a spectacle that would be!
Some people on the forum may not know that Representative Jefferson was the Democrat gubernatorial candidate in 1999 and polled about 35 percent of the ballots. There are some in LA who still admire him, but they may be afraid to speak up.
Dont even begin to try to tell me that LA is more Corrupt than NJ. He!! Our corruption is systemic. We go all the way from the local politicians all the way up to our State Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has ruled in recent years that it was ok to ignore the constitution when it involved a Democratic candidate to appear on the ballot after the final date for changes had passed (Lautenberg). The Supreme Court has allowed for the States operating budget to be financed by bonds in direct violation of a Constitutional mandate forbidding just such a practice. (McGreevy). They made it sound better by saying that they would allow that for only one year.
We are #1 in corruption!
Well, this isn’t a pissing contest I want to take part in.
All I will say is that back in the very early 90’s the gubernatorial election featured a slogan that I will never forget— “Vote for the crook, it’s important!”
This came about because a notoriously corrupt former governor, Edwin Edwards, was running against a former grand wizard of the KKK, David Duke.
Since then, both have spent time in the federal pokey. Edwards is still doing time.
I like that! Vote for the crook, its important. Thats a refreshing bit of candor. The sad thing is that in NJ, being a crook is considered the normal way of doing business. Even our so called republicans are content with working the system since it also pays them well. The corruption knows no boundaries. Our Gov. says that him forgiving his girlfriends loans in none of our business. This even though she is the head of the States workers union and he has to negotiate the union contract this year. It is a very sad state of affairs. A beautiful state, but totally out of control.
Think again Brazile nutt. The allegations are more a little more than just a "distraction".
