BALTIMORE - The NAACP said it is cutting about 40 percent of its national staff and closing, at least temporarily, its seven regional offices to cover three years of budget shortfalls.
The civil rights group will reduce its staff from 119 to 70 through layoffs and attrition to avoid draining more of its shrinking reserves, interim president and chief executive officer Dennis Hayes said. The Baltimore headquarters will remain open and still offer services provided by the regional offices, he said.
"We are right-sizing our organization to meet present circumstances," Hayes told The Baltimore Sun for an article published Thursday.
"We had the unexpected departure of our CEO at a time when we were already without a chief development officer. So, understandably, we have to regenerate our revenue machine, our fundraising machine, to get us to where we should have been," Hayes said.
Bruce Gordon quit as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's president and CEO in March after 19 months on the job.
The NAACP has used about $10 million in reserve funds to cover shortfalls over the past three years, Hayes said. He declined to say how much is left in the fund.
Hayes gave several reasons for the budget shortfall.
"Gas is more expensive, the cost of living is higher, people are not giving as much as they used to," he said. "And membership, we always need more members. Our impression is we can improve and enhance the way we do things."

The civil rights groups active in the ‘50s and ‘60s achieved all of their goals. Could it be that people no longer see relevance to being dues paying members of groups such as the NAACP??

To get more members stop being the center of race-pimpdom, drop the slavish obedience to the democrat party, tell the constituency to learn to speak standard American English, tell them to return to the Christian values that they HAD 40 years ago and which the left helped them to lose!
How can that be? They already blow 38% of their donations on administration. Over 1% just for the CEO, putting them in the Top 10 for low-rated charities with highly-paid CEOs. Just over half actually goes to any charitable work.
The NAACP is one of the worst large charities in the country.
Remember, a donation is a terrible thing to waste.

Good news! Maybe they won’t have the opportunity to do as much race baiting in the future, and poor black people can learn to stand on their own two feet rather than wait for a hand out from the government, courtesy of the mau-mauing by the NAACP.
I think that is the deal. Most of the money given just disappears into someone’s pocket.
I’m surprised no one has mentioned that there have been rumors for years of rampant embezzlement and corruption inside the NAACP.

Although the NAACP is probably a bit short on its “diversity,” I’d suspect that more than a few officers there have discovered (besides being able to abscond with donations from suckers) what the unions are discovering...that the spiel they always claimed about supporting Democrats long enough and somehow the Democrats will support you in turn isn’t that accurate.
The new fads for trend “consciousness setters” are gay rights and global warming, after all. The days of Democrats talking primarily about unions and Blacks have long since passed.
