Girl kills elephant with 83-lb bow
One of the more unusual stories I've seen on the archery forums recently...
And if this is Africa, now she’s going to jail.
Is there more to this story? Usually, killing an elephant will get you incarcerated for poaching- or shot.
Am I mistaken?
Read G. Orwell, ‘Killing an Elephant’ I think that was the name of the short story. It breaks your heart.
By the way, I strongly object to that person being classified as a girl until we can get independant confirmation. Please retitle “Thing kills Elephant” until such time.

Reading the article elicits very little respect for this show-off hunter. She says that in semi-darkness she fired one arrow into one of a group of the pachydermsi, left (presumably for a good night’s sleep), and found “him” (probably her) the next morning. Very un-cool, lady!
Elephants are intelligent, social animals. No responsible hunter would wound game and then go off and abandon it. Of course, only a jerk would attack one elephant in a herd. There was no reason for this killing, other than to flatter the ego of a brainless biped female.
The picture shows no sign that the flesh of the hapless animal is even being bled and processed for human consumption. (It is edible: I have had elephant burgers myself.)
It is a shame that people treat the most noble of animals this way. Why can’t this girl just go play dumb video games, like a normal youngster?
It certainly looks like an African elephant.
They encourage hunting in areas in which elephants are overpopulated. Elephants have the same basic problem which deer have in that they can quickly overgraze an area and then all starve.
The legal limit if there is such a thing would be for MINIMUM poundage, which would probably be about 80.
I wish they would put her a$$ in jail!

Killing animals for sport is just plain wrong IMO, especially ENDANGERED animals!!!! I don’t understand the pleasure of killing an innocent animal.

there are many areas that are inundated with Pachyderms and are legally hunted. It is a necessity is some parts of Africa.

In the areas where people hunt elephants, they are very far from being "endangered"; the reality is there are too many of them and there isn't habitat for them to breed willy nilly, unmolested.
Gloating over a ‘kill’ is about the same mind-set as an Islamist parading with a severed head.

for all your information, the areas that have the largest populations of elephants have legal hunting seasons for them. (and the reason for the large populations IS the legal hunting)
Areas like Kenya which have banned sport hunting have by their devaluation of the aminal caused the decimation of the once huge herds by poachers.
In places like South Africa that allows and charges a premium price for harvesting jumbo, has larged controlled herds and poachers are not tolerated as it takes the food out of the mouths of both the landowners and the government who make out like royalty on the huge fees charged. both have good reason to maintain the herds.
I have watched elephant hunts on the outdoor channel and VS. each one showed the aftermath of the hunt. 10’s of local villagers rendering the carcass for their own larders. The people eat and the hunter brings home his legal trophy. It is a win, win situation.
It is true that elephants are a problem in some parts of Africa. They must be harvested, as in Kruger Park. However, experience has shown that killing individual elephants in a herd terrifies and deeply disturbs the others (who are, after all, the relatives).
Hunters who must thin the population in Kruger now take whole family groups at a time. The hunters are professional, and know what they are doing. Most of them respect the wildlife, and go for a clean kill with high-powered rifles, not minimal toys like that bow-and-arrow, which probably left the animal-victim to bleed to death overnight while her killer was snoozing comfortably.
The meat of the culled elephants is processed, and sold. If you visit there, you can have elephant burgers for lunch. The meat is very low in fat, and somewhat dry: not up to beef or impala, in my opinion, but it should not be wasted.
Looking at it from the girl’s viewpoint, she would have learned much more watching these animals than shooting them. The hunter never sees as much as the observer with a camera: of that I am sure. Furthermore, it is far more exciting to confront wild animals with only a camera, than armed with a lethal weapon. I have been charged by an elephant, and by a hippo, and have lain in the grass 20 feet from a rhino. There is nothing like an element of danger to get the adrenalin going.
How did she kill an elephant with a bow. ,beat it to death? Most would use an arrow in that bow.

I’ve hunted extensively with a bow, killed a number of animals and have seen many killed with a bow, including buffalo. With a well placed shot and a sharp broadhead that hits both lungs, animals typically die in less than a minute, many in less than 15 seconds. Admittedly, we’re not talking about an elephant, though.
And if its South africa the US dollar is worth 1 to their 8. So you are correct that hunters fees are a huge benifit in the ability to manage these herds.
Read about English long bow archers in the fifteenth century. Their bows had a draw weight of about 160 lb., about twice the draw weight of this woman’s bow. Each had to be able to fire at least ten arrows per minute.
Well, I know Howard Hill brought down an elephant with bow and arrow — besides thinking, do you have any evidence that someone did it prior to Hill?

Oh, by the way: I am not against deer hunting (although I do not hunt myself). I do not hunt for several reasons, but one is that I know too many hunters, and I don’t trust their aim at the height of the season.
We do need deer hunting in New Jersey, where more deer are killed by cars than by hunters. The deer are overpopulated, as is shown by autopsies of the game by trained biologists. Many deer here are undernourished, and full or parasites, which is evidence of overpopulation. New Jersey is overrun with deer: they love the suburban environment, and it is difficult to hunt them in the most densely populated state in the country.
You will find many deer here: probably in greater density than in a wild area like Maine. I have actually been hit by a deer while in my car was stopped in traffic! That is how thick they are.
The good hunters I know will not shoot until they have a good shot with a good chance of a clean kill. Its not my choice of a hobby, but I do not oppose hunting. I understand what the hunter is doing. It is part of our instinct. I am doing the same thing with animal photography, except that I have unlimited choice of “game,” and I see more, get better trophies, and do not harm my subjects. The instinct, though, is very similar.

You must do a little research. Elephants are overpopulated in some areas. In others they are scarce. What they are not, is endangered. There are also many different “breeds” of elephants. Some are more plentiful than others and not all are legal to hunt. All hunting is regulated unless done illegally.

This portion of your post clearly demonstrates you are totally ignorant regarding hunting any large animal with a bow.
In order to educate you, killing an animal with a bow requires that one wait before tracking the animal in order to let the animal die peacefully. Immeidately tracking an animal shot with a bow, for the most part, would cause much stress and the animal would run much farther than if left alone.
The reason is the injury from the arrow is virtually painless (like a bee sting, and the animal will run a very short distance, then lay down and die. (unless you push the animal immediately - then adrenaline kicks in and the animal will run a long way)
If you shoot an animal at dark, the best recourse is to either come back in several hours and track after dark, or, wait until the next morning. I would think that tracking an animal after dark in Africa is quiet a dangerous proposition.
Most animals hunted with a bow are intelligent, social animals.
You assume she fired the arrow in darknes, that is not what she posted.
You also appear to have never seen an elk or whitetail deer hunt, where the hunter has to wait for a clear shot at his/her target which is in a group.
You are also making assumptions that the meat from this animal was wasted.
You might want to engage your brain, rather than your emotions next time. Unless of course you are some sort of animal-rights, anti-hunting moron, and then you won't be able to engage your brain. (The tenor of your post suggests that you are the latter.)
