Nation Up In Arms At Olmert's Golan Offer To Syria
IsraelNationalNews ^ | June 8, 2007 | Hillel Fendel

Posted on 06/08/2007 7:25:23 AM PDT by Fennie

As polls continue to show overwhelming national opposition to giving up the Golan, opposition MKs blast PM Olmert for offering it to Syria. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's latest offer to give the Golan Heights to Syria flies in the face of polls showing public opposition to ceding the Golan, and has many MKs on both sides of the political spectrum up in arms. Olmert reportedly informed Syria last month that he is willing to cede the Golan to Syrian sovereignty, but wishes to verify that Syria will, in turn, cut its ties with Iran, Hizbullah and Palestinian terrorist organizations...

So, what is Mr. Olmert eating or drinking that makes him think he can trust Speaker Pelosi’s pals in Damascus?

Mr. Olmert, you lie down with dogs, you’ll get up with fleas - and then some.

What a putz.

Forget the 1967 War! Think of This Summer’s War
Asharq Al-Awsat ^ | 6/8/07 | Amir Taheri
http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1846940/posts

(snip)
A few weeks ago, there was much talk in Israel of a possible return to peace talks with Syria. Some Israel strategists were even deluding themselves with the theory that Syria would walk away from its Iranian allies in exchange for the prospect of recovering the Golan Heights.

Now, however, almost no one in Israel shares such illusions. Hence, the recent string of statements by Israeli military and political officials about the Jewish state’s readiness to take military action against Syria.

If Ehud Olmert survives as Israel’s prime minister he would lack the political strength needed for offering the Golan to Syria in exchange even for the best of possible peace deals. On the other hand, if Olmert is forced out of office, it is almost certain that someone more hawkish, notably Benjamin Netanyahu, would succeed him.

Syria may be on the verge of a strategic diplomatic victory by getting back the Golan for nothing in return.

Not to mention degrading Isreal's strategic defense without firing a shot.

Syria will, in turn, cut its ties with Iran, Hizbullah and Palestinian terrorist organizations...

Well, as soon as Syria agrees to cut ties this should be a done deal.

After all, the Syrians are Moslems. You never, ever, ever hear about Moslems breaking their word.

No sireee, Bob.

Did Olmert have to go to school and study to be so stupid, or is it just a natural talent?

Olmert has 3% support in Israeli public opinion polls. He's finished and will not be re-elected to another term.

“Syria will never cut it’s ties with Iran”

Absolutely correct. Way too much invested and that train has left the station.
I fear war is coming and sadly the only way this will change views. In this case, war is the clarifier of Syria and Iran’s intentions and actions.

Israel has no choice but to be prepared. Nothing is going to change this.
The proxy investment is already too large, too useful and too far along.

I’ve heard that Hezzbully has already restocked and has everything in place should they decide for a summer of fun. And the good ole UN well, add another failure to their list.

Not that I totally agree with Bibi on that, but at least he was trying to get something in return, and recognizing that Iran is Israels ultimate enemy.

Olmert reportedly informed Syria last month that he is willing to cede the Golan to Syrian sovereignty, but wishes to verify that Syria will, in turn, cut its ties with Iran, Hizbullah and Palestinian terrorist organizations...

So let's say that the near-impossible happens, and that the murderous little bastard in Damascus actually agrees to cut ties with Iran, etc. OK, then Israel kind of has to give the Golan back. So, what exactly will Israel (esp. if Foolmert is still the PM) do if 6 months later (after having built lots of fortifications, minefields and rocket emplacements), the Syrians say "Nevermind, we're re-establishing ties with our dear friends the Iranians, etc." They'd be justified under Islamic law in lying to an enemy, and they'd be in possession of land that could only be returned by war.

WHEN WILL THE ISRAELI PUBLIC SHUT DOWN THE COUNTRY TO FORCE A COLLAPSE OF THIS TRAITOROUS SOB AND HIS GOVERNMENT????

all I am saying is that Bibi doesn't always mean what he says and say what he means. it is almost assured that he will replace Olmert and while he at least has some favorables in his corner, he isn't the answer. he is Sharon lite. He ran to meet with arafag at the first moment he could during his first shot at PM. now, times may have changed him but don't expect overnight differences. at least he can start with a fresh deterrent factor.

Syria may also be on the verge of having to make a very important strategic decision. Olmert is not going to make it as PM for too much longer, too much heat bwtn the handling of the Lebanon war last summer, the Winograd report and now this. Assad may feel his window of opportunity is closing if Olmert is going to get the boot and may try something rash.

This is one way for Israel to avoid war, simply surrender. It’s the observation George Orwell made on the subject, and it’s at the core of Jimmy Carter’s strategic thinking.
