Poll: Thompson Shakes Up GOP Race (Rudy 27, McCain 19, Fred Thompson 17%)
Boston Globe ^ | 6.9.7 | Alan Fram

Posted on 06/09/2007 9:11:12 AM PDT by hardback

WASHINGTON --Fred Thompson's expected entry into the tight Republican presidential race is drawing crucial strength from conservatives and older men, vaulting him into the thick of the GOP nomination fight, an Associated Press-Ipsos poll says.

The survey shows the top Democratic contender, Hillary Rodham Clinton, with twice the support from women as her nearest rival but dwindling strength among men. Her margin over Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., has eroded slightly since the last AP-Ipsos poll in March.

Thompson, who sandwiched an acting career around eight years as a Tennessee senator, has impressed many despite not yet formally entering the 2008 race. One in four of his supporters cite his strong character, more than any other GOP candidate.

"He can be kind of Reaganesque in his engaging with people," said Ronald Coppinger, 47, a carpenter from Indianapolis, describing a plain-spoken style like the late President Reagan's.

That has helped inject Thompson firmly into the top tier among GOP contenders in the AP-Ipsos poll, released Saturday.

It shows former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani with 27 percent; Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., at 19 percent; Thompson essentially even with McCain at 17 percent; and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney at 10 percent.

On the Democratic side, Clinton, the New York senator, is drawing support from four in 10 women -- a block that accounted for 54 percent of the vote in 2004's key Democratic primaries. One in three of her supporters cite her experience, the most among Democrats.

"I think women relate more to the needs of people," said cashier Jadine Robinson, 52, of Magnolia, Miss.

Clinton had 33 percent in the poll; Obama 21 percent; former Vice President Al Gore, who so far is not a candidate, 20 percent; and former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., 12 percent.

This is even more impressive factoring in that Fred's not even going to announce until next month.

I expect him to pass McCain by July or August easily with room to spare...

Bah! Fred Thompson is too lazy to shake anything!

All of this is just statistical noise! None of Fred’s supporters know anything about him. Fred Thompson is a gun grabbing, flip flopping liberal from Massachusetts.

Bad mouth Rudy all you want. I will vote for him. Yes he is an egotist. Yes he flip flops on abortion BUT he says he will appoint a strict Constitutionalist to the SCOTUS. Just Google FRED’s BS as to where he stands with Bush and the illegals. Bush’s nephew, a future Hispanic President in the Bush’s eyes, and other Bush hacks have jumped to FREDs campaign - but he hasn’t announced he says - Oh it must be popular demand (BS). FRED was in Congress when the illegals stampeded here - he did nothing, doesn’t condemn Bush’s Amnesty Bill (yes he SAYS he is against Amnesty). It goes on.

I was just getting ready to post that. I think any numbers McCain is getting in these polls are from people that do NOT keep up with politics & his is the only name they've heard of - plus they know he was a POW. It will be very different in a voting booth with only people that actually participate in the process.

McCain is done.

I agree. His sponsorship of the amnesty bill will sink him. Major political misstep, and completely consistent with McCain's arrogant dismissal of the majority American position on illegals.

It could be very close between Rudy and Fred

Liar liar.

For the commentaries, you can click on the link and hear him read it in his own voice if you prefer.

Here is his commentary on the senate bill:

Here is part of a speech that addresses the problem:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0H3zhZu0S5w

Here is a Fox News Interview that deals with the issue:

And here’s a little commentary of Fred’s on how he feels about the policies of the Mexican government:

http://www.abcradio.com/article.asp?id=386577&SPID=15663

He also did another speech in VA on Saturday night that isn’t online yet to my knowledge. He was very forceful about it there and he received a standing ovation from the crowd —mid speech— when he was articulating his position.

I hope to have video online of that speech tonight sometime.

Rudy says, or said, that he will appoint “strict constructionists,” but what does he mean by that?

He has repeatedly said that a woman’s right to choose, all the way up to partial birth abortion, is constitutional. He has even said that women have a constitutional right to have the government pay for their abortions, and he said so recently IN THIS CAMPAIGN.

That’s not my definition of strict constructionist, nor any conservative’s definition. Judges who support the idea that the government MUST pay for poor women’s abortions are going to be off the map on every other issue as well. They will be radical left-wing tyrants, just like most of the judges in New York whom Rudy appointed while he was mayor.

I like Rudy, too, on many issues. But not as president. Never.

Why dont YOU google on how Guliani refused to enforce immigration law in New York City and made it into a ‘sanctuary city’ for illegal aliens? That is a key element to what has made immigration law unenforceable.

“I believe the anti-immigration movement in America is one of our most serious public problems.” — Rudy Giuliani, Oct. 10, 1996.

Guliani supported the Bush position on immigration. Guliani will be more liberal on immigration than Romney and Thompson and certainly the real hawks like Hunter and tancredo.

No, Fred is not perfect on this issue, actually he was not a border hawk in the 1990s... but he is far better than Rudy would be.

If amnesty bill is your issue then Rudy would be one of the worst candidate to vote for.

Rudy is on record opposing enforcement for deporting illegals and infact one of the main reasons for making NYC a sanctuary city for illegal aliens.

Rudy also praised Ginsburg as a great judge and there is no proof that Rudy would appoint a strict constitutionalist to the courts.

Easily, you see how they acted or voted in the past when it was on the line. This is why Fred will win the nomination easily. No, his is not the most conservative voting record of all time but he was a strong Conservative voting Senator and has enough common sense and speaking ability to spread that message to the masses. Besides the other three of Rudy McRomney are not Republicans, they are for all intense and purpose Democrats. Why would anyone vote for those bozos, they can’t even figure out they are running in the wrong party.

Prevaricate much?

"No matter how much lipstick Washington tries to slap onto this legislative pig, it’s not going to win any beauty contests. In fact, given Congress’s track record, the bill will probably get a lot uglier -- at least from the public’s point of view. And agreeing to policies before actually seeing what the policies are is a heck of a way to do business."

"We should scrap this 'comprehensive' immigration bill and the whole debate until the government can show the American people that we have secured the borders -- or at least made great headway. That would give proponents of the bill a chance to explain why putting illegals in a more favorable position than those who play by the rules is not really amnesty."

Rudy is on record opposing enforcement for deporting illegals and infact one of the main reasons for making NYC a sanctuary city for illegal aliens.

If I understand your sentence, you are saying that Rudy made NYC into a sanctuary city? Ed Koch would be surprised to hear that, it being his plan and all. In fact, NYC is still a sanctuary city, despite Rudy no longer being mayor.

Rudy also praised Ginsburg as a great judge and there is no proof that Rudy would appoint a strict constitutionalist to the courts.

The actual quote was this "Giuliani:"That is not the critical factor. And what's important to me is to have a very intelligent, very honest, very good lawyer on the court. And [John Roberts] fits that category, in the same way Justice Ginsburg fit that category. I mean, she was -- she maybe came at it from a very different political background, very qualified lawyer, very smart person. Lots of Republicans supported her. I expect, and listening to Senator Nelson, I expect that John Roberts will get support from a lot of Democrats.""

Hmm, Rudy would like very intellgent, very honest, and and very good lawyers on the court. That's just crazy talk, isn't it?
