A meat supplier has greatly expanded a ground beef recall, which now includes about 5.7 million pounds of fresh and frozen meat that may be contaminated with E. coli.
David Goldman, acting administrator of the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, announced on Saturday that the recall would be expanded to include products with sell-by dates from April 6-April 20. The beef, sold in 11 Western states, was distributed by California-based United Food Group LLC.
Goldman said that none of the latest batch of suspect beef is in stores now because the product would be well past its expiration date, but consumers may still have some of the meat at home.
"It is important for consumers to look in their freezers," Goldman said.
The meat has been blamed for an E. coli outbreak in the Western states that resulted in 14 illnesses, spanning April 25 through May 18. All the patients have recovered.
On Wednesday, United Food Group expanded an initial recall of 75,000 pounds of ground beef, adding another 370,000 pounds based on "unspecified concerns" raised by the California State Department of Health Services. This meat had sell-by dates from April 29-May 6.
The recalled products were shipped to stores in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. They were sold under the brand names Moran's All Natural, Miller Meat Company, Stater Bros., Trader Joe's Butcher Shop, Inter-American Products Inc. and Basha's.
The affected grocery stores included Albertson's, Basha's, Grocery Outlet, Fry's, "R" Ranch Markets, Save-A-Lot, Save-Mart, Scolari's Wholesale Markets, Smart and Final, Smith's, Stater Bros. and Superior Warehouse.
E. coli is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause stomach cramps and diarrhea that may turn bloody. E. coli can sometimes lead to complications including kidney failure.
Customers with questions about the recall can call United Food Group's hot line at 1-800-325-4164. Those with recalled products should either throw the product away or return it to the point of purchase for a refund.

Tyson recalling 40,000 pounds of ground beef sold in 12 states
They were pulling this from the shelves at the local Albertson’s late this morning.
(Should I add Clinton-buddy Tyson to my Permanent Boycott List, along with General Mills and Sony? I sure don't like some of their merchandising practices.)
How many illegals do you think they have rubbing cow sh-- in their ground beef. I never buy pre packaged ground beef
Someone trying to ensure a democratic win :P
How do you buy ground beef?
“(Should I add Clinton-buddy Tyson to my Permanent Boycott List, along with General Mills and Sony? I sure don’t like some of their merchandising practices.)”
YES! You should add that : )
Haven't been buying Tyson for years...based on their love affair with the Clintons, and their disdain for law enforcement and hard-working Americans.
I'm disappointed that Sam's Club carries their products, but I found that BJ's has Purdue so I now go there.
Did this 14 yrs ago.
I have a plastic chub that says “freeze by May 26th”. Bought it at Stater Bros.
If you freeze the meat, thaw it properly, then cook the daylights out of it, shouldn’t be okay?
I always thought e coli was killed off while cooking. That is why the spinach scare was such an issue. Salads are eaten raw.
I don’t know :(
“distributed by California-based United Food Group LLC.”
I knew it was a good idea to get my meat from the local butcher shop. Yes I pay a little more, but I know where it comes from.
It's now General Mills, Sony, and Tyson.
Last time I went to look at a certain kind of digital camera Sony was slightly favored for features, but they went so far overboard on CD "Digital Rights Management" (translation: you as a customer have NO rights) I cannot trust them with anything, *especially* product-specific software I might have to load on my computer. So I bought another brand, one that has not proven to be so untrustworthy as Sony.
See my tagline.
How many cows would this involve?
lol
Amazing. The FDA doesn’t hesitate to do this to an American company, but Chinese seems to be off limits.
Just one of the benefits of industry consolidation.Instead of poor practices or ill workers affecting people in part of a state, now half the nation is at risk.
Wow! You still have butcher shops where you live??
I’m jealous.

It involved the herd used to make rancid sausage for Hillary’s Botax.

Botox Rumours Put Spite Into White House Race
Is this in addition to the recall from the Sherman, TX plant that supplied Walmart?
We’re going to have to start wearing tinfoil hats with all these food contamination cases coming to light.
How safe is the food suppy?

One 4 miles down the road, one in Tumwater, Wa (About 50 miles away) and two others between Tacoma, Wa and Centralia, Wa....
There may be more but these are the ones that I am aware of in my region. I just went to the local guy a week ago and got a 10 lb box of smoked bacon for $13. That oughtta last us all summer.
It involved the herd used to make rancid sausage for Hillarys Botax.<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
LOL
Supposedly cooking the meat well done will kill it, I have always had well done but got e-coli infection about 15 yrs ago, almost killed me, still have one bad kidney from it, had a really big abscess on my liver, spent 32 days in hospital and had lost weight down to below 75 lbs. My advice would be to toss it.
I also have plenty of walking around steaks, but the little woman will not eat anyone she knows and she has them all named.
tube ground beef is gross to begin with.
I agree with you on Sony. I also found that while they were good with their ideas, their actual product engineering was sub-par.
Sony has slipped in the engineering department.
"Western Canadian Beef"
Was out to Vancouver this last week.
don’t think you can cook ecoli out of it.
In and out urge?
In and out urge?
We don’t have a Kroger. The local butchers have been long gong too.
I hope everyone that still has butchers keep them in business.
my father was a farmer and he watched the development of the u.s. dairy and beef cleanliness standards in the early 20th c.,
and the decline of these standards beginning in the 1980’s when the big meat processors eliminated their american union employees
and replaced them with illegals.
Sounds good. FTP me some :)
It is killed by cooking. What they will do is take the recalled beef, cook it, and send it back out so you can eat it on your Pizza Hut pizza.
BTW this is the usual trick. Initially report a smaller amount and when the news dies down up the amount to the true number.
It worked years ago with turkey at Thanksgiving. So now it is SOP
Seems like if you’re on the east coast, health scares are just another headline. But if you live in California, watch out!
It is preferable to purchase freshly ground beef from the person who ground it on the day of purchase. A little known fact is that you can choose a cut of meat, take it to the butcher counter and ask that it be ground. They will do it on the spot. That is by far the safest way to buy ground beef. Granted, it is more costly, but you don’t have the risk of the pre-packaged stuff.
Another way to buy ground beef (at discount) is to go to the butcher counter at the time they close for the day. They often grind up what hasn’t sold in the case and that is the NewYorks, the RibEyes and the DelMonacos - even some tenderloins in there. They often offer it at $1.99/lb. It goes straight into my freezer.
Illegal Mexicans in meat packing plants mad about not getting their cadillac welfare plantation? Or taking a dump in our spinach?
Mexico is not a friend of the United States and never has been. Think about this: Mexican nationals cheering Osama Bin Laden at a soccer match with the USA or carrying signs that glorify Osama Bin Laden in protests over US immigration laws...
Think about things Americans do in large numbers at the same time...
If Islamic terrorists were to poison lots of turkeys just before Thanksgiving, what do you think would be the result? How many Mexican nationals work in those poultry processing plants???
That's even a little better than my earlier boo-boo.

Pitch it. It’s not worth it taking the chance on it being bad.
Good Lord :(
I’ll call Stater Bros tomorrow. I just spent 8 days in the hospital and cannot get sick like that.
Told another poster that I'm calling Stater Bros tomorrow. I don't want me or my family dead, or deathly ill.
It's getting to where you don't know what's safe to eat.
Hell no, I want a refund!
LOL! That’s the spirit!
*sigh*
What makes you think it’s COW sh—?
sorry guys, but this is terrorism.
when pets, and people are being poisoned, that is a form of terrorism.
Perhaps this would be a good time to ask the "D'OH!" question.
Since the object of the safe foods' exercise is to prevent human deaths, correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't irradiation prevent the onset of the illness?
Just asking. ®
