Why was Paris Hilton released? (Sheriff 'favoritism'???)
Herald Sun ^ | 11 June 2007

Posted on 06/11/2007 3:18:12 AM PDT by Aussie Dasher

PARIS Hilton's billionaire grandfather donated money to the election campaign of the sheriff who released the 26-year-old American hotel heiress from jail, it has been revealed.

The contribution from William Barron Hilton, 78, co-chairman of the Hilton Hotel chain, to Sheriff Lee Baca's re-election campaign is revealed in financial records.

A friend of the Hilton family said the temporary release of the heiress last week may have been a "quid pro quo".

"A member of her family has been a contributor to Baca's campaign and this may have been payback time," the friend said.

"Her entourage initially were confident she would be out of jail in a few days."

Mr Baca, who has faced heavy criticism for attempting to overrule the judge in the case, has in the past been accused of favouritism towards the Hollywood elite.

He was the officer who failed to report actor Mel Gibson's anti-Semitic tirade after the star was arrested for drink-driving.

Gibson had filmed television advertisements for one of Sheriff Baca's pet causes - an education fund for policemen's children.

Celebrities including Sylvester Stallone and Dustin Hoffman have also backed Mr Baca's election campaigns since 1998.

She’s not in for her drinking. She’s in because she got back behind the wheel less than a week later when she was not supposed to be driving.

It’s kind of funny - about once a month or so, the Chicago Sun-Times will do a story with pictures showing people leaving the courthouse after having their license revoked, hopping into their cars, and driving off.

When the media obsess over a celebrity slut, the media have lost all credibility and reason for existing.

Sheriff Baca should be removed from office and prosecuted for taking bribes.

Baka, with a ‘k’, is the Japanese word for foolish.
Baka na mono is idiot.

My late father and his fellow Marines and soldiers on Okinawa called the Japanese suicide planes “baka bombs” IIRC.

As I understand it, overcrowding is a problem with the men’s prison — not the women’s.

Irving Schmuckbucket of East Fort Wayne color-coded the labels on the canned goods in his pantry in the summer of 1922.

I always that he took a bad rap for that, myself.

I can’t speak for CA, but in Michigan she would have her probation terminated and most likely received 60 to 90 days. With good behavior she would be out in 50 to 75 days.

Thank God, someone with a brain. I’m from Chicago and nearly sixty and an honest businessman. I’ve had to pay off cops all my life! This is plain and simple. A large bribe was paid and that’s it!!!

Prosecute the sheriff for corruption. A year in prison would set a good example.

was the contribution made BEFORE the arrest?

The article excerpt is a bit vaugue by design. The newspapers write them this way to have the most impact when the “excerpt” pops up in a search engin.

She’s not being singled out. She’s not getting harsher treatment. And she wasn’t sentenced for DUI. She violated probation. TWICE. She’s never taken it seriously. She thinks she’s above the law which probably explains her over the top reaction. If she behaves herself she will do about 23 days. BFD.

It seems that never before has anyone been sentenced to 45 days jail in CA for doing what Paris did.

She had a .08 alc level... that is not much I must say.

No, it's not a lot. Especially since the anti-alcohol nannies of MADD got the limits lowered. But she was swerving like crazy, so for her, she got busted with that small amount of booze. Being on other drugs at the same time accentuates the effect of alcohol.

She did NOT get sentenced to jail for drunk driving (pled down to 'reckless driving'), she got sentenced for her SECOND time driving on a suspended license, when she has more than enough money for lawyers to explain patiently that she should not do this. She also has more than enough money to hire a limo and a driver to whore around LA.

As for "harsh treatment", she is going to get her "good time" discount, as long as she does not assault fellow inmates or staff. She will spend the next two weeks until release drugged out of her mind, with her shrink coddling her every day. If she ever does get back into a real jail (I expect it before the end of this year, given her propensity to learn NOTHING from her misbehavior) the regular inmates are going to freak out! There are loads of them who don't have a team of lawyers, doctors, and even a sheriff bought and paid for!

BTW, Baca means fool or ass in Japanese, IIRC

According to the Babelfish translator at AltaVista, 'baca' translates to 'it gets worm-eaten'.

So what? Some rich people whose kids turn out to be spoiled brats have attorneys on retainer. In this case, they have the sheriff pre-bribed. We have no idea how many 'warnings' she got prior to actually getting busted, that the contributions bought and paid for.

Perhaps the office of sheriff should not be an elected one.

I think it is far more likely that the sheriff wanted to avoid the problems associated with having a hyper-elite-celebrity in his facility. Unless the Hilton parents contacted him privately and made an offer (which is possible), he probably wanted to avoid the headaches more than he wanted to fawn over one of the “beautiful people” and curry her favor.
