Most Americans favor letting illegal immigrants become citizens, poll finds (criminals excluded)
LA Times ^ | 6/12/07 | Janet Hook

A strong majority of Americans — including nearly two-thirds of Republicans — favors allowing illegal immigrants to become citizens if they pay fines, learn English and meet other requirements, a new Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll has found.

That is a striking show of support for the central tenet of legislation that has stalled in the Senate amid vocal opposition from conservatives to provisions allowing such a path to citizenship.

Only 23% of adults surveyed opposed allowing immigrants to become legal. That bolsters the view, shared by President Bush, that the bill's opponents represent a vocal minority, whereas most people are more welcoming toward illegal immigrants.

"They are willing to take jobs that our people aren't interested in, and I think this helps the economy," Joseph Simpkins, a retired dry cleaner in New Jersey who participated in the survey, said in a follow-up interview. "As long as they pay taxes, I see nothing wrong with having them become citizens

...(buried at bottom)

The survey question specified that, under the proposal, citizenship would be available only to those who register their presence in the U.S., have no criminal record, pay a fine, get fingerprinted and learn English, among other requirements.

The letter I sent stated that 60% of the illegals would be disallowed under this criteria....so yes, Americans do favor it.

They lie. The truth is most conservatives are opposed to amnesty. But the Los Angeles Times goes out of its way to hide from its readers the truth.

I’m for any immigration plan that would exclude lawbreakers from amnesty.

I have but one question. Where in our government does it say that we are to govern by poll results? polls are not that accurate and can be easily tainted. I really don’t like this new wave of polling. as if a poll is the ultimate decision decider.

As a “pro illegal” conservative, I would claim that this poll is as suspect as the polls that show the opposite.

The fact is that most conservatives ... and most Americans are ambivalent about illegals and immigration in general. Depending on how the poll questions are asked, a pollster can get any result he wants.

The reality is that after all is said conservatives in the GOP base are split right down the middle on this issue. Neither pros nor antis can honestly claim that they represent conservatives.

About 2 million of the 12 million illegals are murderers, rapists, DUI drivers, welfare parasites and truly undesireable people. Bush should focus on removing them now to demonstrate that he can enforce the law ... at least selectively.

Symbolic raids on meat packing plants are not convincing anyone to back the Bush plan. Bush could raid a hundred such plants every week and the antis would still oppose the Bush plan.... not to mention the compromise with Kennedy plan.

Bush should remove the 2 million undesireables, not to play politics, but because not even the 10 million desireable illegals want the 2 million trouble makers here.

They are ALL lawbreakers. Every last one of the illegal aliens in the United States are criminals. They broke the law by coming here. How can anyone consider amnesty to any of them?

Most estimates say that 50% of the illegals have committed a felony by either a) re-entering the United States after being deported, b) used a fake or stolen identity to work, or c) been convicted of a felony crime.

The fact that the Cornyn amendment failed as it addressed all these tells you the worth of this poll....

“Most Americans favor letting illegal immigrants become citizens,
poll finds (criminals excluded) “

Not suprising, as A LOT of Americans have no idea about the prevelence
of criminals (violators of USA’s immigrations laws, criminal codes
and Identity theft codes) in the illegal immigrant community.

They’ve NO, ZERO, NADA promise that these self-importred criminal
will change their criminal behaviour if made US citizens.
Not one bloody chance.

This is BS. And are we suppose to wait to find out who the criminals are before we deport?
