From the ArmyTimes:

"FORT HOOD, Texas — A soldier who went missing for four days after a solo navigation exercise died of hyperthermia and dehydration, according to autopsy results released Wednesday.

Officials have said Sprader had two canteens of water, a water backpack and two Meals Ready To Eat when he left. His body was found near plenty of drinking water from creeks and other sources, said Robert Volk, Fort Hood’s chief game warden."

I assume that the water backpack he had was 3 liters. The ones that my buddies get issued before heading to Iraq are all 3 liters.

So- he runs into the woods with two cantees of water and a backpack created for water retention. (As far as I can tell, it’s typical for such a device to go un-checked at PCI)

He finds a stream and doesn’t know if it’s drinkable water or not- but damn, if he isn’t hot! So hot he hasn’t noticed he’s stopped sweating under his soaked-clothing.

“I think I’ll cool off in this water.” He says, takes a dunk, and its so cold it hurts him. He gets out “Yeah, that was good enough” and goes into shock on the beach as the rest of his body heat rapidly leaves him. (throw in possible health complications) and he just black out. Never wakes up.

Plausible in you professional opinion?

Plausible. I’m waiting for more details, because depending on how things pan out, I’m pretty sure heads will roll.

Dehydration comes to mind.”

Not in my mind.

Sprader had returned from an Iraq deployment in September

Officials have said Sprader had two canteens of water, a water backpack and two Meals Ready To Eat when he left. His body was found near plenty of drinking water from creeks and other sources, said Robert Volk, Fort Hood’s chief game warden.

somethin’s fishy here....”

Absolutely

Trust me- having just come back from Iraq is typically a sign that the person may be more headstrong. “I survived in Iraq for a year, I know how much water my body needs. I don’t need this much.” (as he refuses to fill his water pack.)

This person, though noble in his line of work, is still a human. We all get arrogant at times, even to the point of self-danger.

Regardless, all we can do is speculate in waiting for the report to be conducted.
