Conservatives Get Ultimatum, GOP Pushed on Immigration
Roll Call ^ | June 13, 2007 | John Stanton

Posted on 06/13/2007 9:43:46 AM PDT by 3AngelaD

Senate conservatives have been warned by Republican leaders that they must either accept a series of largely symbolic floor votes on a handful of amendments to the immigration reform legislation or see themselves shut out of the process altogether when the chamber resumes work on the bill later this year, GOP lawmakers and aides said Tuesday...

Sure would like to read the rest of this. Anyone have a Roll Call subscription? LARGELY SYMBOLIC FLOOR VOTES...Are they truly such idiots that they would allow the bill to come back to the floor and vote for cloture under these circumstances, under any circumstances?

Sadly, I'm thinking the answer is "yes."

How about a ‘largely symbolic’ vote on deporting the illegals who committed additinoal felonies or were known gang members?

How about a ‘largely symbolic’ vote on refusing free public services (except for life threatening emergencies) to individuals who are NOT legal citizens or naturalized citizens?

How about a ‘largely symbolic’ vote on children being removed from the schools when their illegal parents go back South of the border? Or at least have 25% of their paychecks garnished to go to the school districts to cover the education of the illegal children they brought to the US?

How about a ‘largely symbolic’ vote on stopping all future illegal immigration?

These a-holes would rather split the party than take the common-sense approach of enforcement first.

Time to take our party back, boys and girls. And if we can't take it back, it is time to cut off the pro-illegal contingent of the party and build a coalition of the willing between conservatives and Dems who are also appalled at illegal immigration (and there are plenty - the GOP mayor of Hazelton who pushed for anti-illegal ordinances won the GOP primary AND the Dem primary with write-ins).

We will prevail. If not here, then in 2008.

Turns out the bunch of thumb suckers are exactly what we in the south have been told from birth. See when it gets right down to it the Republicans have, ( in a most ignorant and stupid political play in history) backed themselves right into the oldest democrat play in the book. “Republicans are the rich man’s party.” The demos know their voters are disconnected, and forgetful so come election day it will have much much less net affect on them than it will on conservatives who will never forget this vote. Not only will the last vestiges of Regan crossovers head for the hills but a huge number of us “Average American” types will look for other avenues to express our desires for our country’s direction.THese could range from political offshoot parties which will render the GOP toothless, to more ,shall we say directed action.

Whether the conservatives opposed to cloture can be shut out of participating in the process of producing a bill or not, there are still Senators on the other side of the aisle who oppose the bill in its present form due to the ‘guest worker’ portions of the bill opposed by the AFL-CIO. There happens to be at least one member of the group opposed to cloture who knows full well how the Senate can be tied up in knots with arcane parliamentary procedures, i. e., democrat Senator Byrd of West Virginia. Unless the ‘guest workers’ of the bill can somehow be removed from the bill it is going no where. In return, the Pubbies, at least the rinos, will not let go of the additional visa quotas that are part of the bill, including the new Z visas for illegals currently residing in the country. Therefore the impasse will continue. As a backstop, even if the Senate should miraculously pass a bill close to what it is now, there is much more opposition on both sides of the aisle in the House to such a proposal, and it thus die on the vine there as well.

I am beginning to wonder, truly, if there is not something wrong with him.

Maybe the years of the most vicious, abusive attacks on a president in the memory of the Republic have taken their toll.

Maybe there really is something wrong -— like Alzheimers. Seriously. It just seems to very unlike him! Not the president I voted for.

Surely he has not even read this provisions of this bill?

They should give some ultimatums of their own. This legislation is rotten to the core and nobody wants it except for a select few so why not tell the leadership to either dump it or we'll find new leaders? It only takes 25 votes to put in new ones.

Just off the phone with Senator Pete Dominici’s assistant at his DC office.
Expressed my opposition to the AMNESTY Bill and inquired how the call were swinging.
I asked if it was roughly 10 to 1 against the bill, and this fellow said “it’s a heck of a lot more than 10 to 1 against.”
No personal data asked but the pro/con is entered into a computer and the Senator “has developed no position and the bill is dead anyway”.
I discussed zombie movies and the horrors arizing from the grave, and we both chuckled. He agreed, but said the flow of incoming calls was “having some effect”.

Got it in one, but even more shameful that the South Carolina Weeping Pansy, Kyl, Martinez and McConnell are cooperating in this confidence trick with Reid and Kennedy. Here is the deal they’re offering: we’ll let you propose some amendments, which we will ensure are voted down, in exchange for you voting to invoke cloture to bring the bill back to the floor. How many of them will be stupid enough to buy this, or pretend like they’ve bought this so they can defy their constituents?

“later this year” when the Senate revisits the issue sounds good to me! Closer to the elections. More time for opposition to organize. Make sure you get involved in some way with FAIR or other organizations. Develop e-mail contact lists of opponents. Collect the appropriate numbers to call for easy e-mail. Fax and write on an ongoing basis to close down illegal entry to the country, enforce the laws against employers. Get involved in local politics so that you can organize locally . . . if we sit on our fannies they will sell the country down the river (across the river?). Basically, make them regret stirring “us” up.
