Cheney has been silent on this as far as I know.
I’m thinking he told Bush to well you know.

The rest of the pic I agree with.

I’m hoping the fact this isn’t Reagan but Bush the Younger, will make this turn out differently than the 86 POS foisted upon us all.

It certainly will turn out different than in '86... it'll be several orders of magnitude worse.

If the enforcement provisions that Reagan signed into law had been implemented and maintained, we would not be discussing this issue right now.

We’ll see.

Actually, you don't have to wait to "see." Take a look at Post #30 on this thread for evidence of how "Bush the Younger" has no intention of making this turn out differently.

No, Virginia, there is no savior of the Republic in the White House today, and all the wishful thinking in the world won't change that fact.

‘If the enforcement provisions that Reagan signed into law had been implemented and maintained, we would not be discussing this issue right now.’

Fair point. But the laws as they existed prior to it were not enforced either.

Same old, same old, in short.

Apparently, I didn’t make my view clear on this.

Bush doesn’t have the ‘juice’ politically Reagan did in 1986 when he signed that bill into law. I supported it because I trusted Reagan.

I lost faith in Dubya with Harriet Miers, and haven’t seen anything to reconsider since.

I never lost faith in Ronald Maximus.

I have been using the CCIR (amnesty supporters) phone number (1-800-447-7666) to call both of my senators twice a day to let them know that I will be watching for continued opposition to the immigration bill. However, Senator Lamar Alexander’s office no longer answers the phone to which this is routed, and it is automatically rerouted to Senator Corker instead. I have had to use Alexander’s regular phone (1-202-224-4944) to reach a person in his office. Here is what I tell them:

1. my wife and reside in Memphis, and we have never failed to vote in over 4 decades

2. we detest the bill due to the instant and unconditional PERMANENT legal status it gives to uncounted millions of invaders, including actual felons of all sorts, from using forged documentation and identity theft all the way to child predation and murder.

3. we are perfectly aware of the procedural maneuvering with this bill, and we know the difference between symbolic but ineffectual window dressing votes and the critical procedural votes that will determine the fate of this assault on citizenship - and we WILL hold you and your colleagues to account on this hyper-critical issue.

4. I am an AMERICAN citizen by choice - I was born in another place, and took a formal oath of citizenship when I was 18, many decades ago. NOTHING is more precious to me than my citizenship, and I will NEVER FORGIVE anything that devalues, denigrates, or discounts the value of this prize as this bill does.

5. The President is WRONG on this issue, as he has been on a few others, but this time he chose to personalize it by questioning the principles and values of his opposition. He owes me (and many of you) an apology.

I remember the Reagan amnesty, too. I was against it, back then, until Reagan convinced me that it was the LAST amnesty, and strict enforcement would begin. Reagan actually thought it was his job to persuade the American people that this was in our best interest.

Unlike Reagan, GWB doesn't care that the vast majority of Americans are opposed to any further amnesty, and want our borders secured first.

Same thing here with me.

We haven’t had a President I trusted like that since he left office in January of 89.

“Huddling with Chertoff for ideas about tougher border security would be like huddling with Ray Nagin for ideas about how to use school buses for hurricane evacuations.”

Cheney actually proposed a co-sponsored a full deportation bill back in the 80s.

Reid

This week, we will vote on cloture and final passage of a comprehensive bill that will strengthen border security, bring the 12 million undocumented Americans out of the shadows, and keep our economy strong. In the days ahead, we will work to improve the bill to protect and strengthen family ties while improving the structure of the temporary-worker program.

Notice the wording - written by a liberal reporter -- liberals are NOT taking ownership of the immigration bill. They're trying to pin it on all Republicans - and only 10 of our guys voted for it. Can anyone smell the coffee?

It will be the GOP that gets credit for killing the Kennedy-McCain immigration bill.

Those GOP senators who supported it will hopefully pay a price in the primaries.

What Bush has succeeded in doing is uniting the GOP base on this issue.

I heard on another thread that Harry said -no more amendments-vote on the bill as is, or he won’t bring it back. The poster said he heard Harry on the radio. I hope this is true.

Reid knows that it will not survive any serious amendments, the Democrats will reject it.

Hence, the attempt to ramrod it through quickly.

I snorted iced coffee out my nose when I heard Reid say that. It will haunt him for years. The guy is way, way out of his depth.

Insightful - thanks, I feel better.
