ELK POINT, S.D. - A Texas-based energy firm planning to build the first U.S. oil refinery in more than 30 years said today that Union County is a finalist for the $8 billion project.

The refinery, which Hyperion Resources Inc. described as a "green energy technology center,'' would create as many 10,000 construction jobs and employ 1,800 after its completion in four years.

Hyperion also is considering "alternative sites'' in at least two other Midwest states, project executive Preston Phillips said at a late afternoon news conference at the county courthouse. A final decision should come by the first half of 2008, he said.

This is in my wife's home town.

Might have an excuse to move back now.

So now we know what the monster project was all about. WSJ reported on this unknown project about 1.5 weeks ago.

Would be the first whole new refinery in abuot 30 years in the U.S.

Wow. Good news, but we’ll have to wait for the 10 years of eco-lawsuits before breaking ground.

I’ll believe it when I see it completed.

I'll believe it when I see it started.

That is what I told my father in law.

Many locals don’t want it either, and South Dakota State is right next door. This is far from a done deal.

Actually, that would be the University of South Dakota next door in Vermillion, not SDSU. USD is the liberal-arts university for the state (law/medicine/arts types) while SDSU is the Land-Grant (agriculture and engineering).

I’d love to read about the layers upon layers of government this project needs to get through before it can be completed. Plus the lawsuits etc...

There are dozens of locals that are going to do their level best to submarine this project. There was a group with a website and ad budget that came out against this project before anyone, including these people, even knew what it was. Of course these are people who either a)don’t work, nor have any ambition to, or b)already have a nice, clean job somewhere making big cash and wonder why everyone else doesn’t, or c) are so blindly hateful to corporations especially “big oil” that even if they paid $100/hr to their employees it would somehow be a ripoff. I’m amazed at times. I hope this thing gets built.

I hope they have better luck than Arizona Clean Fuels. It took them 7 years to get the permit for a new refinery. Before construction really got started, they are tied up in court over civil lawsuits by NIMBYs.

Yep, you are right. I grew up just 70 miles south of there (in Nebraska) and never got that straight. Which is sad as my wife’s cousins teach there.

Do they want $5 per gallon gas?
