Space shuttle's return may be delayed
AP ^ | June14, 2007 | MIKE SCHNEIDER

Posted on 06/14/2007 3:15:17 AM PDT by don-o

HOUSTON - Russian computers that control the international space station's orientation and supply of oxygen and water have failed, potentially extending the space shuttle's mission — or cutting it short.

Russian engineers aren't sure why the computers stopped working. A failure of this type has never occurred before on the space station.

The station is operated primarily by the Russian and U.S. space agencies, with contributions from the Canadian, European and Japanese space agencies.

"We have plenty of resources, so we have plenty of time to sort this out," said Mike Suffredini, NASA manager of the space station program.

But the computer failure could extend space shuttle Atlantis' mission by at least a day and, in a worst-case scenario, force the space station's three crew members to return to Earth early if the computers aren't fixed.

Atlantis' mission had already been extended from 11 to 13 days so that astronauts can go on a spacewalk to repair a thermal blanket covering an engine pod that peeled up during launch.

Suffredini said he expected the problem to be fixed in the next couple of days. In a worst-case scenario, if at least one of the computers wasn't operating after the shuttle left, the space station's three crew members could return to Earth, he said.

Thrusters on the docked space shuttle, along with the space station's gyroscopes, have been fired periodically to help maintain the space station's positioning since the computers failed earlier this week.

The space station needs the maneuvering thrusters controlled by the Russian computers for docking and avoiding space debris.

Without the Russian oxygen-machine running, the space station has a 56-day supply of oxygen left. "If we are in that position, we have an option to depart," Suffredini said.

Russian engineers think the computers' failure could have been triggered by a power source. The space station earlier this week got a new pair of solar arrays that were delivered by Atlantis and unfolded Tuesday to help provide power.

During a spacewalk on Wednesday, astronauts Patrick Forrester and Steven Swanson started to bring to life a rotating joint that will allow the new pair of solar arrays to track the sun. Astronauts will finish prepping the joint on another spacewalk.

Forrester and Swanson also helped retract a 115-foot wing of an old solar array that will be folded up into a storage box and moved to another location later this year.

Only 13 of the array's 31 sections were folded up, so flight controllers and astronauts will try to fold up the rest of the solar wing by remote commands on Thursday.

NASA managers decided Wednesday to use a spacewalk on Friday to repair a torn thermal blanket located over an engine pod near the shuttle's tail.

The astronauts will secure the blanket using staples found in the shuttle's medical kit and loop-headed pins that come from the shuttle's tile repair kit. If those methods don't work, NASA flight controllers will have the astronauts sew it into place using a stainless steel wire and an instrument that resembles a small needle.

Engineers don't think the damaged section of the thermal blanket, which protects part of the shuttle from the blazing heat of re-entry, would endanger the spacecraft during landing. But it could cause enough damage to require schedule-busting repairs.

NASA has focused intensely on any problems that could jeopardize a shuttle's re-entry into Earth's atmosphere since shuttle damage resulted in the 2003 Columbia disaster that killed seven astronauts.

It is common knowledge that Microsoft CD-ROM’s, when played backwards, are heard to contain satanic messages. Even worse, when properly played, they install Windows.

Heh. Now, now. - We can’t do great things that advance the frontiers of knowledge. - It would take food out of the mouths of babies starving in Africa and Mexico. - and who would pay for bread and circuses?

Oh, I have a feeling that they will return to Earth pretty soon...

Don’t laugh about wood. “The Chinese Space Agency has developed the most elegant and amazingly cheap method of building a re-entry shield for their single-use re-entry vehicles. They use oak wood. A thick piece oak is an ideal insulator and ablative material. Oak burns very slowly and it does not transfer heat very readily.”

Yes because the first thing I think of when I consider exploration, innovation, and invention is the government. I'm 'patriotic' that way....

Until space exploration and all invention is turned over to the private market (as intended) we will never move much further past flying 40 year old space buses into orbit. Sure, George has promised to fleece the public for even more funds to sponsor a jaunt to Mars but it will never happen. Not under government leadership.

Shut down NASA now. It's been draining us for at least 49 years. Allow private industry, without government sponsorship, to take the lead. If there is a need and a desire, it will be funded by private investors. If not, so be it. But I know there's a desire

Moon, Mars, does it really matter? I mean yes it does but this is an example of the differences. Give private industry unfettered abilities to develop a vehicle, and if there's private support (which there would be), we'll be on Mars in 10-15 years.

OTOH, come 2018 NASA will still be fiddling on the ground with reworked Apollo landing vehicles wondering how they're going to fit an iPod next to the display panels.

The latest info from the NASA site is almost offensive in the lack of info on the computer outage. It looks like they are deferring any responsibility to the Russians.

Why did the ISS have their first complete computer failure now?

BTW - The gyros themselves can’t compensate for the movement generated when the Shuttle finally undocks. Either the computer gets fixed or the ISS crew has to evacuate when the Shuttle leaves.

“Russian flight controllers will be working overnight to resolve a problem with the Russian segment computers that provide backup attitude control and orbital altitude adjustments. For now, the station’s control moment gyroscopes are handling attitude control, with the shuttle’s propulsion providing backup.”

As a question to everybody with an opinion and with knowledge about the subject, what would happen if we were to liquidate NASA? For what I know right now, which isn’t much, private firms have rockets that put satellites into orbit; they’re still working on a reusable entry and re-entry vehicle.

Would NASA have to provide every page of their research to private firms so they can boost their knowledge? Also, how reliable would their vehicles be?

And now, for another viewpoint on a touchy subject, let’s examine this scenario in light of “saving face:”

The damage to the shuttle may well be fatal; the alternative to admitting this is to concoct a problem with the Russian-installed equipment which makes a perfect excuse to get them into the act.

The Russian government then decides that they should send repair parts up to the station along with a skeleton crew so as to leave room aboard their spacecraft to transport the US astronauts safely back to Earth.

NASA announces after arrival of the Russian craft that the assessment of damage has disclosed more risk than originally thought.

In the interest of safety and international cooperation NASA will send our crew home and the Russians will park our crippled shuttle in the shadow under the carport.

A future mission will be sent up to repair the shuttle and return it home.
