Bill Carr, acting deputy undersecretary of defense for military personnel policy, expressed hope today during a telephone conference with veterans’ group representatives that a provision in the stalled immigration bill that would have allowed some undocumented aliens to join the military won’t stall as well.
The Army recruited 5,101 active-duty soldiers in May, 399 short of its 5,500-soldier goal, the Defense Department recently announced.
The Navy and Air Force, however, both met their May goals, with 2,709 and 2,451 recruits, respectively. The Marine Corps exceeded its May goal by 34 percent, signing on 2,225 new Marines.
The provision at stake is the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors, or DREAM that offered illegal residents a way to join the military and, ultimately, become citizens, Carr explained.
"In other words, if you had come across (the border) with your parents, yet you were a minor child and have been in the U.S. school system for a number of years, then you could be eligible to enlist,” he said. "And at the end of that enlistment, then you would be eligible to become a citizen.”
Because the provision would have applied only to the "cream of the crop” of students who have demonstrated top aptitude, it would have been "very appealing” to the military, Carr said. "It would have been good for readiness,” he added.

The Marine Corps, the guys sure to be on the front lines, are vastly exceeding their recruitment goasl. Fact is, the Army has been doing well too.

They've made citizenship in this country all but pointless.
Anyone who is willing to put his neck on the line for this Country should be allowed to, and be put on the fast-track to citizenship.
Don´t like the idea. Why saddle the NCOs with a bunch of uneducated non english speaking soldiers. Went through that shit with the draft back in the sixties. really sucked.
Honestly I think that’s a good idea. Let able-bodied immigrants (also legals), seeking citizenship, serve in the military first. Citizenship has to be deserved.
I do not like to have non citizens in the military. I heard of a guy who wanted to join the US military because he said he would never make this much money in his own country and after he got the experience and citizenship he expected to move up in the drug cartel.
They might fight to get into America, but I’m not sure that
they have a furvor to fight to preserve her!

Do like the Romans did, enlist them for 20 years as auxillaries, send them off to fight, and if they survive, then we’ll talk about citizenship.

Heaven forbid they should enlist gays who are Americans. We can’t have that! We’d rather enlist foreigners - especially those who want to kill us. It is better that thousands of Americans die than that we should be protected by icky people. Note - only Americans can be icky. Foreigners are never icky. Especially illegal immigrants. My Congressman told me so.
These kids are illegals, but not criminals. The parents who brought them are criminals. As long as they have no criminal history, speak English and are fit to serve, I think it would be a good idea to let them earn their citizenship after serving in the military.
Except gays.
