EXCLUSIVE: Fred Thompson Pro-Life Video Address
CBN News ^ | June 14, 2007 | David Brody

Posted on 06/14/2007 6:38:22 PM PDT by Politicalmom

CBNNews.com - It’s Christmas in June here at The Brody File. Look what we found under the tree. It’s a present from “supporters of Fred Thompson” given exclusively to The Brody File. It is a pre-recorded Fred Thompson video addressing the National Right to Life conference tonight in Kansas City.

Because of his schedule, he couldn’t be there in person so instead he recorded a two and a half minute video for the pro-life crowd. We have it. It starts out with Thompson and his wife Jeri, and then we get a rare look at his children for the first time.

You can watch the EXCLUSIVE video here:

http://www.cbn.com/vod/index.aspx?s=/vod/FREDthompson&title=Fred%20Thompson%20Speech

and read the transcript below:

“When I was in the Senate a lot of people would come to see me and it usually would have to do with business matters or financial matters or something pertaining to their financial welfare. When you came to see me, I always knew it was about something much more important than that, the most important thing of all in this World and that is life and I must say that those issues are even more profound to me as the years go by. Jeri and I have truly been blessed. Let’s talk about some of those issues for a moment. In 1994, I made my first run for the U.S. Senate. I was proud to receive the National Right to Life endorsement. I’ve been with you ever since. You’ve been with me ever since. On abortion related votes I’ve been 100 percent. We’ve had a lot of different kind of issues come up in the Senate from federal funding to stem cell research, Roe versus Wade and the partial birth abortion debate or as former Senator Pat Moynihan of New York used to say it’s more like infanticide than partial birth abortion. You know one of the proudest moments I’ve had as a private citizen was when the President asked me to help Judge John Roberts through the senate confirmation process to become a member of the Supreme Court. Well, now he is Chief Justice John Roberts, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed, but I think he’s going to go down as the best Chief Justice that this country has ever had.

On stem cell research, I’m for adult stem cell research not stem cell research where embryos of unborn children are destroyed. It looks to me like there is a lot of promising developments as far as adult stem cell research is concerned anyway and we don’t need to go down that other road.

Of course I am also concerned about these children after they’re born. I’m concerned about the cultural environment that they’re going to grow up in. I’m concerned about the fact that we’re bankrupting our entitlement program that’s going to saddle them with unbelievably high taxes when they’re going to try to start their families and buy that first home. I’m concerned most of all about their safety. We have an enemy in this World that would like nothing more than to kill thousands more innocent Americans; men, women, and children. I know you share those concerns, and I look forward to working together with you on them. Thank you so much for letting me be with you here for a few minutes today.”

He sure does come across as authentic. It's downright folksy and non-threatening. It really is his first official "salvo" into the pro-life arena as a presidential candidate. Oh, that's right. I forgot. he's not a candidate...yet.

Now before I hear from the Romney and McCain supporters about this, The Brody File is all about fairness. Mitt Romney addresses the group Friday. We plan to search out video of his remarks. If we can’t get video, we’ll post his comments. As for John McCain, he is not speaking at the event. I called the McCain campaign about this.

Spokesman Danny Diaz tells The Brody File:

“Unfortunately, Senator McCain’s schedule will not allow him to attend but certainly this is an issue that is important to him and one that he communicates with voters as he travels the country.”

The Brody File has been told that Sam Brownback and Ron Paul will speak too. Mike Huckabee was invited to the event but he had a scheduling conflict because he's out raising money in Texas. As for Rudy Giuliani, umm…well…umm…enough said. He’s probably watching past campaign ads of himself. Like this one. Nice hair. Click here.

Hi MHGinTN! Thanks so much for the ping!

Thompson comes across as a completely admirable man. Still my heart belongs to Huckabee.

Not to say he will win even one primary. For as Plato well understood, the probability of a philospher-king rising in a socially-effective manner in any human public scene is precisely zilch to none.

Notwithstanding, my heart goes out to Huckabee. May his voice be heard as long as poossible in this protracted election season.

Has Senator Thompson ever made any statement regarding the intervention to save Terri Schiavo? It happened after he left the senate, but the position he takes will be a legitimate test between his dedication to the defense of innocent life and his federalist tendencies.

Interesting. Okay, here's a quote about Fred Thompson I came across...what do you guys think about it?

"However, when Fred Thompson was in the Unite States Senate, both times he ran for the Senate he ran as a pro-choice candidate. He was against the Republican pro-life plank in 1996, when I was out in San Diego fighting to keep it in the platform. And I think he has to explain much more persuasively than Mitt Romney did why it is that he is now a pro-life. "

I found it quite curious, and I wondered if anyone had heard anything like it previously?

P.S. PM, I'm still hoping for Newt to swoop in and take it all.....

Regarding Huckabee, I would love to get plenty of edification from folks familiar with his governorship. We’ve heard from plenty of MA voters regarding Romney. ‘where’s the beef’ from the AR voters?

He did NOT run as a pro-choice candidate.

Fred wonders how it all got started:

In the days since Thompson allowed that he was thinking about running for president, his views on abortion have come under scrutiny. Thompson finds the news reports from his first run for Senate perplexing.

“I have read these accounts and tried to think back 13 years ago as to what may have given rise to them. Although I don’t remember it, I must have said something to someone as I was getting my campaign started that led to a story. Apparently, another story was based upon that story, and then another was based upon that, concluding I was pro-choice.”

But, he adds: “I was interviewed and rated pro-life by the National Right to Life folks in 1994, and I had a 100 percent voting record on abortion issues while in the Senate.”

Darla St. Martin, associate executive director of National Right to Life, supports Thompson on those claims. She traveled to Tennessee in 1994 to meet with him. “I interviewed him and on all of the questions I asked him, he opposed abortion,” she told the American Spectator’s Philip Klein.

- Stephen F. Hayes, The Weekly Standard, From the April 23, 2007 issue

http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/013/528aylls.asp

National Right to Life Committee on Fred Thompson:

“This morning, I cited reports being promoted by the pro-Romney blog Evangelicals for Mitt suggesting that Fred Thompson ran his two campaigns for Senate in Tennessee as a pro-choicer. Not so, National Right to Life executive co-director Darla St. Martin just told me.

St. Martin said that she went down to Tennessee in 1994 to speak with Thompson personally when he first ran for Senate, and that she determined he was against abortion.

‘I interviewed him and on all of the questions I asked him, he opposed abortion,’ St. Martin said. She told me that the group went on to support him in that election, and his record reinforced for her that their determination was correct.

‘He has a consistent voting record that is pro-life,’ she said.

On the NRLC website, they archive their congressional ratings back to 1997, so they include six of his eight years in the Senate. Thompson took the pro-life position on every vote he cast on the abortion issue...”

http://www.spectator.org/blogger.asp?BlogID=6017

NRLC says Fred is [still] pro-life:

“With 54% of the vote, pro-life former Tennessee Governor Lamar Alexander (R) won the seat of retiring PRO-LIFE Senator Fred Thompson.”

So you are saying that Fred Thompson was NOT against the Republican Party pro-life plank in 1996 and the guy I quoted is lying?

I was most encouraged by Senator Thompson’s wording ... he address embryos as unborn children, which they are. Embryo is an age we all went through as alive unborn human beings working toward eventual living in the air world. We live the first ages/stages of our inidivudal life in the water world. Fred refers to embryonic beings as children. Right on! Right on, eventual Mister President!

Fred shakes his head too much.

Reagan would tip his head down and up sideways sometimes when he made a joke or was stressing something, but my beloved Fred has the never ending jitters.

But then again I know a woman I work with who moves her hands rapidly whenever she’s explaining something. Maybe I have behavioral quirks myself, but I think Fred needs to slow his head nodding and twitching down some if he can.

Just friendly advice.

Just for curiosity's sake, do you know who this quote is from?

The San Diego reference really makes it hard to figure it out...

So, where's the link to Congressman Hunter saying this? What's his evidence? Fred's on video back then saying the same things he's saying now. If Congressman Hunter is assuming based on the ravings of some of the anti-Fred crowd, he is doing himself a disservice.

I don’t really know. He may have been against the pro-life plank on states’ rights grounds, I guess.

I tend to take the word of someone who lied about Fred being “pro-choice” with a grain of salt, though.

Surely...I was watching Terry on Hardball and he said it...I actually couldn't believe it and thought I had heard it totally wrong, but here's the transcript link...

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19209859/

Look about 3/4 of the page down...I recall in 1996 that Bob Dole wasn't big on that plank and Dole said he didn't even read the platform and didn't have to abide by it anyway...do you recall Thompson being involved with the platform committee? I think Hyde was the chairman then... Take care...

Well, perhaps we should contact Terry and ask him just where he gets this information. He’s the only one saying it.

Again, he may mean that Fred was against the plank because he didn’t support an amendment, which is fair to say. Saying Thompson is pro-choice, however is a big stretch.

Huckabee is a nanny-state RINO who craves power. He’s solid on abortion and the 2nd Amendment - but that’s about it. But he loved to raise taxes, pardon violent criminals, and mandate how Arkansans should live their lives. He’s bad news.

I found it quite curious, and I wondered if anyone had heard anything like it previously?

Back in 1996, Fred was in favor of over turning Roe, and he favored states passing reasonable restrictions such as parental notification and restrictions on late term abortions. Fred also spoke out against federal funding for abortions. Fred was against the federal government criminalizing abortions, which in reality is something that won't be on the table anytime soon. Romney supporters like to characterize this as pro-choice just as Romney was, but that simply was not the case. Romney spoke out against any restrictions and thought Roe was great law.
