Slowed by Age, (KKK) Byrd Relies on Colleagues
New York Times ^ | June 14, 2007 | THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Age is finally catching up with West Virginia Sen. Robert C. Byrd in the winter of his 54-year career in Congress.

At 89, the longest-serving senator in history and third person in the line of presidential succession has ceded major duties -- such as handling appropriations bills on the Senate floor -- to younger colleagues and aides.

Byrd continues to steer pork projects to his home state, rail against President Bush and the Iraq war and quote Cicero and the King James Bible now and then on the Senate floor. But as he walks haltingly with two canes and an ever-present assistant, he increasingly seems an anachronism in an Internet-age Congress where some members are young enough to be his grandchildren.

''I'm told that 90 is the new 80,'' Byrd, a Democrat, said in a statement issued by his office. ''I am proud of my white mane, but I still long for the black hair of my youth.''

He longs for the black hair of his youth, I wonder if he yearns for the white hood he used to cover it?

An honorable man would have stepped down long ago when he couldn’t handle the important business of our nation on his own anymore. He’s like my old high school in the summer time—no class.

Here’s a Daily Show clip of Dennis Miller ripping on Byrd (down at about 2:10 of the 6-minute segment): “Is he eating his own sh**!? That was CRAZY!”

Bonus slams of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid too!

Because:

He carries a copy of the Constitution in his pocket … never read it, but carries it nonetheless. When anyone argues with him he pulls it out of his pocket and waves it around.

They propped up Strom, they’re propping up Byrd, and if Kennedy’s gut doesn’t explode, they’ll prop him up too.

I doubt that Byrd can go to the toilet without assistance any longer, so I question his continued presence in the Senate. All he is doing is following in Strom Thurmond’s steps, by insisting on staying till he dies in office.

One of the biggest travesties of our Gubment is public specatacles like Senator Byrd, that accomplish absolutely nothing.

“How this guy ever became the “conscience of the Senate”, I haven’t a clue.”

Because in the prior days when the RATS had even more complete control, the other eligible titles of “Senate Drunk”, Senate Egrandiser”, “Senate Traitor”, “Senate Senility King”, “Senate Copy Cat”, “Senate Leaker”, “Senate Nepotizer” and “Senate Indian Taker”, were snapped by Kennedy, Gore, Kerry, Laudenberg, Biden, Feinstein, and Daschle repectively. With all the good ones literally stolen from him, what was Bobby to do. He might have gotten “Senate Porker” but deferred to Boxer being the gentleman that he is. Of course Patty Murray beat him out for “Senate Idiot” without even the necessity of a recount.

Sen. Byrd has set a new standard for taxpayer-funded narcissism by convincing the West Virginia Legislature to erect a statue of himself in the state Capitol. The statue's completion violates state law prohibiting statues of government officials until they have been dead for half a century.

Byrd's statue is currently housed in the Capitol Rotunda, as shown in the picture, and it is said if you stand under the statue the senator's hand points directly at your pockets.

He’s the only one who can deliver the goods for West Virginia. Once he is gone, the state will have to depend on Jay Rockefeller, and he can’t deliver. Give Byrd his due. West Virginis is one state that got little from Defence appropriations, which has been the biggest part of the federal pie.

Unless WVA gets a Pub guv again, Byrd will be there till he approaches Strom’s age, 100. He could be elected as a corpse in WVA because he brings home that pork baby. Even a CIA office in WVA of all places.

And is anyone else more than a little disturbed that only three people have to die to make him President?

I saw him there today (if you're talking about Byrd)...he was shaking mightily, as if he had Parkinson's or something. I've seen Muhammad Ali shake similarly, but of course Ali is 30 years the younger.

His political origins were certainly conservative, including a stint in the Ku Klux Klan -- membership for which Byrd has repeatedly apologized.

Typical NYT to refer to the KKK as a "conservative" organization. Sentence should have read, "His political origins followed the standard path for advancement in southern Democratic politics at the time, including a stint in the Ku Klux Klan...."

That would explain our Senates lust for slave labor.

Looks like 2 seats could be up for grabs. West Virginia and South Dakota. I am truly sorry about Sen. Thompson's heath.
