Fred Thompson Leading in New Mason Dixon Poll in South Carolina

2008 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION SC poll has Obama, Thompson as frontrunners By Les Blumenthal McClatchy Newspapers

* Document | South Carolina poll data

WASHINGTON – South Carolina appears poised to shake up the 2008 presidential race, with Democrat Barack Obama and Republican Fred Thompson the frontrunners in a new state survey by Mason-Dixon.

With strong support from the African American community, Illinois Senator Obama has assumed a strong lead over New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. On the Republican side, Thompson zoomed to the top spot, slightly ahead of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, even though he hasn't yet announced his bid for the GOP nomination.

The Mason-Dixon poll, made available to McClatchy Newspapers and NBC News, offered disappointing news for two candidates who previously had been polling well in South Carolina. John Edwards, a South Carolina native who won the primary in 2004, was well behind Obama and Clinton on the Democratic side. Arizona Sen. John McCain, meanwhile, appeared to have lost many of his supporters to Thompson, and was far back in the GOP field.

Thompson, a television actor and former Tennessee senator, topped Giuliani by 25 percent to 21 percent. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was next at 11 percent, followed by McCain at 7 percent and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee at 5 percent. Huckabee has gotten strong notices in the last two Republican debates. Twenty-eight percent were undecided.

The new poll was striking evidence of Thompson's rise from nowhere in early presidential readings to potential front-runner status. Thompson’s first campaign swing as he edges toward a formal candidacy will be in South Carolina on June 27.

Thanks. This poll is further confirmation of the Public Policy Poll on June 4 that had FDT leading Romney 27-16 in South Carolina.

I think you are right. Romney, who is taking the right positions on most issues (for now, but could flip back at any moment) is so transparently a “country club” Republican that there is no way he can appeal to blue collar Democrats the way FDT can. And this election can only be won by raiding Democrat votes. Fred is the only candidate that could accomplish this IMHO. He will completely change the dynamic of the race.

I can only imagine her debating Fred. It reminds me of what William F. Buckley once said, when asked “Why does Bobby Kennedy refuse to debate you?” Buckley replied, “Why does baloney reject the grinder?”

FDT would destroy her both on style and substance. It would be a worse wipe-out than what Reagan did to Carter in 1980.

Bush didn't get CA, far from it....he still won. I don't think Fred has to get CA either, though it would be great if he did. There will be a lot of dem cross-overs for Fred but I don't know if there will be enough for Fred to win maniacly liberal CA.

CA electoral which will be a must to win.

Update... Bush didn't come close to winning CA either time. CA is a lost cause. Key states are FL, OH, and WI.

That said -- I do think Fred will win by a comfortable margin and will easily carry all these battleground states -- and might even contend for CA.

Rudy does not stand a chance against Fred in the South, and neither does Romney for that matter. Romney has to win states like New York, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and California to have a shot at the nomination. I think Romney will do well in the northeast and Michigan. Any logical person though could not buy into that Robo poll from California which shows Romney way out in front which Romney supporters are wetting their pants over. How California plays out will be interesting.

McCain’s slide into single digits might reflect his support for the immigration reform package, legislation that is unpopular among South Carolina Republicans. South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham was booed at a recent GOP state gathering when he sought to defend the reforms.

Amen brother! Pandsey Grahamnesty is DEAD meat in South Carolina.

fyi,the "mainSLIME media" will SAY that the "hilleryBEAST" overwhelmingly won every debate, no matter what ACTUALLY happens.

remember that "TET 68" was an unmitigated DISASTER for the NVA, but the "mainSLIME media" SAID that the USA lost the "Tet Offensive" & the "public" was STUPID & NAIVE enough to believe the "talking heads" on the BOOB-tube. (FYI, they still ARE that stupid & clueLESS!)

fwiw, when the mass of the "general public" is "very interested in" (or worse "riveted to"!) the "Paris Hilton Tragedy" or cares whether Britteny Spears wears underpants (or doesn't), that alone should tell you just HOW clueLESS,ignorant, shallow & UNeducated the "public" is!

given that the "mainSLIME media" ROUTINELY & INTENTIONALLY lies, i do NOT see "good things" ahead for this Republic.

Agreed. Which is why I don't think the traditional "battleground" states will really matter with Fred on the ticket. He'll win easily. I think we could easily see NY and MA as being the "battleground" states --which equates to an electoral landslide.

Maybe California can lead the way and divide their electoral votes based on popular vote. The MSM thinks that is a wonderful idea when talking about GOP strongholds.

In all the polls I have seen, Fred is competitive with her now, without having declared or campaigned a bit. Once the two are side by side, the part of the American electorate, which is not aligned and not very ideological, will choose the one they like the best and that will be Thompson by a very comfortable margin.

Yeah, but that only works out to our benefit if we get on the phone to State Treasurer Thomas Ravenel’s office and urge him to run for the nomination. Or get any of the other guys to commit. Time is running out. If we let it go, we’ll end up with a rat int he seat for sure.

I'm thinking 40 also, but not the same 40. Things have changed since then. The 10 blue states would NOT include West Virginia, NOR Iowa, NOR Wisconsin, and probably NOT Oregon, NOR Washington, NOR Minnesota. But they probably WOULD include socialist utopias like California (as you said), AND Vermont, AND Maryland, AND Connecticut, AND New Jersey.
