If only it could be a capital offense to putt along at 55 in the left hand lane while a stream of traffic has to wizz by on the right.

I’m not in the left lane unless I’m moving as fast as the car in front of me. And if I’m moving as fast as the car in front of me, I will not move over just so some asshole can tailgate the guy in front of me instead of tailgating me.

Traffic permiting, I normally cruise at 80-85 but if traffic comes up behind me I move over and let them go.

Durring the day, a lot of the traffic on the North County freeways moves at 90-100.

If there is a lot of them I will push it up to just slower than they are going,

LOL! I move over. But in Massachusetts, that can be dangerous, because they pass you on the soft shoulder (R) there. Amazing!

The left lane is for passing. If you’re not passing anyone, move to the right. If you’re passing and some guy behind you wants to go faster than you, complete your pass, move to the right and let the guy behind you pass. Simple rule - works nicely for the Germans and would avoid much road rage if everyone here abided by the same common-sense rule. Unfortunately there are way too many drivers oblivious to what’s going on around them and also those charming types bent on enforcing the speed limit in the left lane.

We seem to have this identical discussion at least once a year.

The emotionally challenged insist that if they are "doing the limit", they own the lane, and tough noogies to everyone else.
Of course, it nevered occured to these Einsteins that on a multi-lane freeway, everyone going the speedlimit would cause more accidents and road rage than anything imanigeable. I can just picture the fun trying to get on or off the freeway where the number of trucks exceed 25%...

You and I drive about the same.

How about leaving a safe distance to the guy in front of you? A driver zips up behind you, squeezes around the right and then slides into the small space in front of you.

Or you’re in the right lane and someone comes speeding up behind you, cuts to the left to pass, cuts back in front of you and then breaks for a right turn?

I usually drive in the left lane unless of course it happens to be a carpool lane during a time I’m not carpooling. If I am in the left lane and going my usual speed which is a few miles over the limit and someone comes up behind me, I’m not about to move. Why should I if I’m going above the flow of traffic? If they really want to break the law by speeding right by me, they can do it on my right or use the car pool lane to pass. Is this just a Washington State thing? I never even heard that one was supposed to move over to the right to allow speeding cars to pass (unless of course your either going under the speed limit or an emergency vehicle is approaching)?

If I’m not moving as fast as the person in front of me, I ALWAYS move over to let faster drivers pass.

If I’m moving the same speed as the people in front, I stay in the left lane, figuring the person behind me can’t go any further, and if they WANT to pass on the right it will be easier if I’m in the left with the person they have to get around.

I also try to drive in the lane furthest to the right that I can drive in, so I can move to the left to pass. However, if that means I pass people two lanes over who didn’t move over, I do that, even though technically that is “passing on the right”. I figure if I’m in the right lane and I’m moving at the right lane speed, it’s not my fault if someone slower is to my left....

I’m the same - I maintain the speed of the car in front of me, but I also maintain the car length travel distance. Of course, because there is the “gap,” I often find drivers on I-680 in Northern California think I’m going slow and get right on my tail. In that case, I mumble an epithet, and as soon as possible move my car to right lane. After that, I move back, notice the individual has now moved to the bumper of the guy in front of me.

Mind you, I’m going 80 at the time, not the posted speed of 65. However, all I can think of when dealing with this driver is “man, I hope that extra two seconds you picked up is enough for the apparent checkered flag you’re getting at your destination.”

I do also move aside when I see drivers that scare me.

I don’t understand the ‘car length travel distance’ ;-)

I was watching a Mythbusters where they showed that following a truck at 20-10 feet improved gas mileage by a huge amount, and they talked about how nobody would ever do that. Well, maybe not quite THAT close.....
