Obama finding new allies: Republicans
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | 6/19/2007 | Jennifer Hunter

Posted on 06/19/2007 6:24:20 AM PDT by Mike Bates

There is an interesting phenomenon that has arisen over the last few months: a trend of moderate Republicans who want to vote for Barack Obama. It may seem counterintuitive, conservatives supporting a candidate who wants to tax the wealthy and embrace the conventions in the Kyoto Accord, but there is something in Obama's message about ridding politics of partisanship that is appealing to these Republicans.

He doesn't carry the baggage of a Hillary Clinton. He is new; he seems authentic -- although his connection to indicted fund-raiser Tony Rezko has made some previous supporters wonder -- and he has more gravitas than pretty boy John Edwards. The Republicans who like him may have supported John McCain in the past, but after eight years of the Bush White House they feel they can no longer support the Republican field. The idea of a congressional glasnost -- a harmonic nonpartisanship in Washington -- is an Obama goal they endorse.

Some of these right-wing Obama supporters are putative country club Republicans, hailing from areas similar to the North Shore of Chicago. Others are professionals who are disillusioned by the Bush administration's failure to develop a sound domestic policy to redress issues of health care and Social Security or to end the relentless war in Iraq.

Add to this the secrecy of the Bush administration, the Scooter Libby affair, the unfortunate choice of Alberto Gonzales as attorney general, the scandals of Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo, the Tom DeLays and Mark Foleys, and there remains an unsavory stew of problems for those once proud to call themselves Republican.

Some of these right-wing Obama supporters. . .

Some of these folks may have been "Republicans," but I seriously doubt they were ever "right-wing."

They’re as “Republican” as Jeb Eddy.

What a crock! If any Republican supports Obama, that person is not a Republican. This sounds more like a wish than a reality from the writer.

Obama and gavitas in the same sentence, that is too funny.

Jennifer Hunter must be on some pretty powerful mind altering drugs if she believes this tripe.

My guess is this is another classic liberal rag article with no data to support a made up story.

I can't wait till her next article highlighting the Libertarians for Hillary movement.

Heck, I might vote for Obama. I’m serial!

In the Democratic primary in my state, that is. Just to screw with the Donks. He’d be an easier candidate to defeat in the general than Her Heinous, IMHO.

No way would I vote for him in the general.

(I should point out that I’m a conservative, not a republican.)

Why waste your vote? Vote in the GOP primary for a conservative.

And you can bet these “republicans” get

Brain-washed.

They only said he had gravitas when compared to Silky Pony. That ain't saying much!

Actually, I think you are closer to the truth. THe Chicago papers have been heavily pimping Obama for about 2 years now. This is likely just a made up scam to see if anything gets stirred and Republican bites.

Hillary is evil. Obama is merely clueless and a likely failure.

I may cross over to help defeat Hillary in the primaries.

Its getting hard to vote Republican, given their pro-spending and pro-law-breaking record. Maybe we should focus on defeating the real evil, Hillary, by whatever method possible.

Obama for Democrat Nominee!

I was counting the seconds until someone posted this sort of reply.

It’s June of 2007. The primary isn’t until next year. Why don’t we wait and see what the landscape is, at that time. It may well be that tipping the Dem primary to Osama is the smartest way to get the most conservative candidate elected.

You can have the last word — I’m not going to debate you on this. It’s just silliness at this early juncture, anyway.

They went from Republican right to Conservative.
There’s a big difference!
There might be Republicans for Osama, I bet there aren’t any Conservatives though!
