Security First, No Amnesty

Here’s the press release from the House Immigration Reform Caucus on some new, amnesty-free initiatives:

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Immigration Reform Caucus Chairman Brian Bilbray (R-CA) joined Congressman Peter T. King (R-NY), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, and Congressman Lamar Smith (R-TX), Ranking Member of the Judiciary Committee, to unveil two new border security and immigration initiatives—a comprehensive border security and immigration reform bill as well as a resolution calling for full enforcement of all current immigration laws. The two new measures represent a strong ‘Security First-No Amnesty’ alternative to the Kennedy-Bush Senate Amnesty bill.

“We decided to take action today rather than wait for the Senate to pass an amnesty bill the American people clearly do not want,” Bilbray said. “There is no reason why Congress shouldn’t take immediate action to secure our borders, strengthen our immigration laws, implement true interior enforcement and establish a working employer verification system.”

The Secure Borders FIRST (For Integrity, Reform, Safety and anti-Terrorism) Act of 2007 will mandate operational control of all our borders and ensure better enforcement of current U.S. immigration laws.

“First and foremost, we must gain control of our borders, and the Senate bill fails to do this,” King said. “Furthermore, against the wishes of the American people, the Senate bill would provide almost immediate amnesty for an estimated 12 million illegal aliens here in the United States. These are serious issues that would only serve to weaken the security of our country.”

“The immigration status quo is intolerable. Not because our immigration laws are broken, but because they are not vigorously enforced,” Smith said. “Immigration enforcement has failed primarily because Administrations for 20 years have not enforced sanctions on employers who hire illegal immigrants. Our resolution calls on the Administration to enforce employer sanctions systematically, not just sporadically.”

The bill also reforms the H-2A Visa program to allow for a market-based number of temporary agricultural workers each year. The legislation does not provide amnesty, or the legalization of aliens illegally residing in the United States, and would make English our nation’s official language.

“By reforming the H-2A program we already have in place, we can better enforce our immigration laws while ensuring American farmers have the workforce they need,” King said.

Furthermore, House Republican leaders have introduced a resolution calling for the enforcement of all immigration laws points out a number of current laws that are not fully enforced. This includes implementing both the entry and exit portions of the U.S. VISIT program, enforcing the employer sanctions that were enacted as part of the “Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986,” and increasing the number of Border Patrol agents, detention beds, and immigration investigators.

Bilbray added, “The practice of rewarding illegal behavior and ignoring current immigration laws must come to an end. No one believes that you can grant an amnesty first and enforce the law second. What part of illegal is hard to understand?”

“The Administration claims we have a de facto amnesty now,” said Smith. “That’s true and it’s the result of the Administration’s own lack of determination to enforce the law. We don’t need amnesty to enforce current law; we need to enforce the law to eliminate the need for amnesty.”

“If Congress is serious about border security and immigration control, then this is the solution,” King said.

I called the ineffectual junior Senator from Florida, Mel Martinez today and told his staffer: “Where’s the fence?” She said: “Thank you for your call.”

to unveil two new border security and immigration initiatives—a comprehensive border security and immigration reform bill as well as a resolution calling for full enforcement of all current immigration laws.

Congress has failed to ensure the current immigration laws are enforced for years and now they expect us to believe a resolution will change their attitude? No further legislation, resolutions or initiatives are needed to enforce these laws. Talk is cheap. Lead by example and just do it!

What you said reminded me of something. Last year when the house passed HR 4437, there was a sense of the congress section about enforcing the law. No one paid much attention to that.

SEC. 1004. SENSE OF THE CONGRESS.

It is the sense of the Congress that the Secretary of Homeland Security shall take all necessary steps to secure the Southwest international border for the purpose of saving lives, stopping illegal drug trafficking, and halting the flow of illegal entrants into the United States.

To which the increasingly rude and belligerent DHS Secretary Chertoff might respond "You've got a fence in your backyard. Why do you need one on the border (snide chuckle)."

(For those who don't know, this is the way Chertoff has responding to legitimate immigration questions over the last several weeks).

“The Administration claims we have a de facto amnesty now,” said Smith. “That’s true and it’s the result of the Administration’s own lack of determination to enforce the law. We don’t need amnesty to enforce current law; we need to enforce the law to eliminate the need for amnesty.”

This cuts to the heart of why the Bush Administration has no credibility on the immigration issue. They have been pro-amnesty all along, and have been complicit in the current failure of border enforcement and the overall lack of enforcement of our immigration laws currently on the books. The refusal of the Bush Administration to pardon the two border patrol agents that were sent to prison for merely doing their jobs says far more about the real Bush immigration policy than many months of official White House press releases.

Although I don't know the specifics, I think it is safe to say that Bilbray, King, and Smith are far closer to representing the true desires of the American people than that monstrous, 800 page, piece of garbage that was born out of a closed, back room deal in the U.S. elitist, cloistered, Senate.

Perhaps a law should be passed that all immigration law, like tax law, has to originate in the House of Representatives. That might give us a better chance of not getting such garbage as we have been getting from the Senate in the last two years.

I think that when a sitting President will not listen to the voice of the people and continually goes out and pushes a proposal that would reward criminal behavior,Flood our social services, and create a voting block dedicated to reacquiring large areas of our country. Then as bitter as it seems I think the time has come for members of his party to approach him and suggest that they will introduce a motion for his impeachment on the basis of his not defending the security of the U.S. That by not securing our borders and enforcing our current laws the security of the nation is in dire peril. What good is it to fight them on foreign lands but let them in unfettered through our open borders.Maybe the thought of his own party impeaching him would shock him into action. Every politician needs to remember the preamble to the Constitution starts We the People Not We the elected few. I am a Republican but I am not an idiot I refuse to follow blindly what an politician proposes without thought and speaking out either in support or opposition. That is my right I served and fought in combat for this country and I refuse to surrender it to any politicians even ones from my own Party. President Bush has been a great leader and the majority of his programs have been outstanding but on immigration and amnesty he is crossing the line into that realm where the security of our nation outweighs allegiance to a party that is out of touch with the will of the People.

I voted for Bush both times, and given the choices we had, it was the thing to do.

Having had said that, I couldn’t agree with you more. The performance of the Bush Administration in the illegal alien and immigration enforcement areas has been abysmal. Since when is a President empowered to only uphold the laws they like and ignore the laws they don’t like? Since when do we elect a President to use his office to cram down the throats of the American people an immigration bill which they resoundingly reject? Impeachment? Hell yes!!

Furthermore, I am highly disgusted with the U.S. Senate, which, freed of its constitutional obligation to represent the States by the 17th Amendment to the Constitution, has degenerated into an elitist oligarchy which cares little about the desires of the people or the states they represent.

When Reagan ran his amnesty game, he had legislated an enforcement which Ted Kennedy had canceled as soon as he could. Looks like the Pubbies have failed to see Ted driving this one right into the same cove. They don’t do the enforcement first, it will never come to pass and the dnc will have assassinated the Pubbies with their own weaponry because they failed to learn from History.

This is a disconnect between the leaders and the led on par with France in the 1770a, or Russia in the early teens.

It may actually be worse ... we the people are the sovereigns of this nation according to our founding documents by which we lend power to those we elect. Rush is fond of pointing out that as soon as more than fifty percent of the governed are drawing subsidy from the government, those who will legislate the most give away will be the elected. I sure hate seeing it come in my lifetime.

Here’s a list of key Senate contacts for EVERYONE to email regarding immigration. Many offices are putting calls straight to voicemail and they can just trash faxes (and letters take weeks to get through due to security). Let’s hit Hill staff where they are so codependent - their Blackberries. Send email directly to staff - not just the generic Senator’s mailbox.
