EXECUTIVE SUMMARY ICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN FY 2006
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) ^ | May 15, 2007

Posted on 06/20/2007 4:29:59 PM PDT by AmusedBystander

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement(ICE) set new records for enforcement activity, ended the long-standing practice of “catch-and-release” along the borders, launched major new initiatives, transformed its detention and removal process, and improved its intelligence functions.

Some milestones include:

Total arrests made in worksite enforcement cases was more than seven times greater than in 2002, the last full year of operations for U.S. INS.

Ended “Catch-and-Release” for non-Mexican aliens existed for years and was one of the greatest impediments to border control. DHS and ICE re-engineered the detention and removal process to end this practice along the border, an accomplishment considered impossible in 2005 when only 29 percent of non-Mexican aliens apprehended along the border were being detained.

ICE removed nearly 195,000 illegal aliens from the country, a record and more than 13 percent increase over prior year.

ICE nearly tripled the number of fugitive operations teams deployed nationwide from 18 to 49. These additional teams maximized the efficiency of ICE immigration enforcement efforts to locate, apprehend and remove primarily criminal aliens.

ICE created a national center that reviews aliens at all 114 federal detention facilities (as opposed to only 30 federal facilities in 2005), to ensure that criminal aliens are deported rather than released into society upon the completion of their sentences.

Increased Arms and Strategic Technology Investigations: ICE set a record in 2006 for arms and strategic technology investigations . Indictments increased by 66 percent , while arrests rose 41 percent and convictions rose 5 percent.

ICE concluded a 15-year probe into Colombia’s Cali drug cartel, with the cartel leaders being sentenced to 30-year prison terms and agreeing to a $2 billion forfeiture.

Targeted Transnational Gangs: Through Operation Community Shield, ICE arrested some 2,290 gang members nationwide in FY 2006, and a total of 3,700 total since February 2005.

Certainly they’re working on positive Public Relations... The question remains for me: is it style over substance?

As long as he’s still talking about amnesty for the 20+ million ICE didn’t catch, I could care less about this window dressing.

If the border was secure, the increased deportations would have some meaning. Most that are deported simply return within hours or days of being deported. That is why securing the border has to be step #1 in any real plan to deal with illegal immigration.

BTW, how do these workplace enforcement numbers compare to past years, before President Bush took office? I know there is a graph floating around, I can’t remember the numbers, but I hope someone will post the graph I have seen.

Black and white, all or nothing Bush haters won't see it that way. I despise his immigration lunacy, but the bashing of the President here will continue until he has reached the level of Ronald Reagan on illegal immigration!

Oh, uh, wait a minute...

I do notice the Bush administration is trying very hard to do something positive FOR illegal aliens- at the expense of the rest of us that are not illegal.

Why are Mexican illegal aliens treated differently? Why is it ok for Mexicans to break the laws? Can anyone explain that to me?

Catching them is not the solution. Stopping them from coming is cheaper and more effective.

And of those, how many were the EMPLOYER and how many illegals were let go?

That number came from a reply by Martial Monk, whom I assume was joking with the 37 number.

There are good cops and bad cops.

As an aside, I live south of Tucson with several neighbors who are Border Patrol agents and have been for many years. They tell me that the Bush Administration has done more to help them than any previous administration by increasing agents, better equipment, etc.

I know that they have a hard time recruiting enough agents and have huge billboards and job fairs begging for applicants. I guess not enough Americans are interested in those kinds of jobs.

Maybe they can recruit from south of the border. /s

That is what I thought. Interesting that the "new and improved" numbers in this press release compare to previous years under President Bush and not previous years when enforcement numbers were higher.

Clinton did far more than Bush....These reports are just more lies.

Here is another whopper from the White House:

“For the most part, immigrant workers find employment that tends to complement not replace the jobs held by workers born in the United States, the paper says. On average, native-born U.S. workers’ wages have been boosted as immigrant workers have helped to expand the nation’s overall economic pie and thus its wealth by billions of dollars a year”

Tell that to 260,000 American construction workers who no longer have a job.
Tell that to 500,000 American manufacturing and factory
workers who were pushed out for illegals.

Just plain ol B S

Here’s a list of key Senate contacts for EVERYONE to email regarding immigration. Many offices are putting calls straight to voicemail and they can just trash faxes (and letters take weeks to get through due to security). Let’s hit Hill staff where they are so codependent - their Blackberries. Send email directly to staff - not just the generic Senator’s mailbox. Total arrests made in worksite enforcement cases was more than seven times greater than in 2002, the last full year of operations for U.S. INS.

Of course, that was down vastly since the mid Clinton Administration. And the crackdown only happened when Bush wanted his shamnesty bill.

These idiots act like their critics are not up on the facts.

Of course, that was down vastly since the mid Clinton Administration. And the crackdown only happened when Bush wanted his shamnesty bill.

Actually 2002 was down as the administration reorganized the department and put more emphasis on investigating high risk targets like power plants in the wake of 9/11 attacks. Enforcement has been steadily improving each year since. But maybe you'll get lucky and Clinton II will give you all that you seek on illegals.

What good is “equipment” they aren’t allowed to use?

They have to tolerate being attacked by Mexicans, and can’t fight back.

These border patrol agents don’t appear to think that
things are great:

Boy, we still have a Kool-Aid drinker willing to defend Bush's sorry record on illegal immigration and enforcement! Of course, you're reduced to comparing to Hillary - the usual last resort.

Bush's record on enforcement across the board is pathetic, no matter how hard you try and spin this.

“Why are Mexican illegal aliens treated differently? Why is it ok for Mexicans to break the laws? Can anyone explain that to me?”

That would have been a perfect question for Chertoff when he brought up “No More Catch and Release” on Limbaugh yesterday.

While I personally wouldn't be able to put up with the crap that cops do without shooting the culprit (ever watch the crap on COPS tv show from good ol' American citizens?), these agents have specific rules of engagement as determined by the Congress. Very, very few have any problems with those and many illegals have been wounded or killed with no repercussions to the agents.

Occasionally there are crooked agents and I'm sure that some agents have been wronged, but I'm sure this is true of any law enforcement agency anywhere in this country.

What's wrong with Kool-Aid? It's a great American drink.

And I'm not comparing to Hillary. I'm just tired of all the whining about how bad Bush is when all these illegals have been here since forever. This administration has been better than the prior ones on seeking enforcement while concentrating on Islamists around the world, a feat never attempted by any previous administration.

As long as you have half of this country inviting them in, giving them jobs and sanctuary then you can't expect much more to be done. At least GWB is working on a solution to an inherited problem with no meaningful support from the Right.

Bush has failed to secure the border in a post 9-11 world. Bush's DHS cannot even track visa overstays almost six years after 9-11, despite the fact that many of the 9-11 hijackers were visa overstays.

Bush has Chertoff holding enforcement hostage to shamnesty. Bush also fails to learn from Reagan's mistake with the 1986 amnesty, and instead seeks to make a far worse mistake.

So blame is being placed squarely where blame is due. On Bush. Or does the buck not stop with Bush?
