A House Judiciary Committee Web page asking former and current Justice Department officials to offer their stories on politicization of the department "launched prematurely," but is still legitimate, Democratic Chairman John Conyers said Thursday.
The response came after Texas Rep. Lamar Smith demanded the new page be removed from the committee Web site, and called it a partisan attempt to persecute the Bush administration and misuse taxpayer dollars for a witch-hunt.
Conyers said the attacks by House Republicans over the page are creating a "sideshow and a distraction" from the real issue the firings of eight U.S. attorneys last December, he said.
"Some have raised allegations about a Web page that was designed to give department whistleblowers a mechanism to securely communicate with the committee. The Web page was launched prematurely, but the content of it represented a good faith interpretation of House rules," Conyers said in a statement.

The Democrats are just getting dumber and dumber, with this investigation sideshows.
Conyers could murder his mistress on prime time TV and get re-elected in his district, but that doesn’t mean he has broad national appeal.
The only problem is that the Republicans seem to be getting dumber and dumber, too, so it’s uncertain whether they can profit from congress’s current unpopularity.
What part of “at the pleasure of the President” don’t they understand?
The firing of the 8 attorneys IS the sideshow. “Clown show” is more like it. Conyers must want to lower Congress’ approval rating even further. If that’s possible.
All these politicians care about is finding dirt on someone instead of doing the countrys business. Recall them and find people that are willing to work for a living. It’s amazing that those people can get one hell of a retirement, not Social Security like the rest of us, for doing absolutely nothing.
I heard Smith talk about this on CSPAN radio. He made very clear that the new website violates House rules and it needed to be taken down immediately. He also made clear that he was going to find out if any members new about the website before its launch. He was not happy.
What a cute way to say that they violated the house rules: they committed a "good faith interpretation"
That argument worked for Bill Clinton, didn't it?
The Democrat party: no plan to govern, just bitch and moan about the past.
LOL!
John Conyers is not only a liar, and a bad liar, he’s a stupid liar.
