Raymond Bunn Indicted For Murder (cop shoots criminal trying to kill him)
LELDF ^ | 6/20/07

Posted on 06/22/2007 10:48:40 AM PDT by pabianice

The latest challenge for LELDF is the case of Officer Raymond S. Bunn, a 37-year old husband and father of five children who was a seven-year veteran of the Atlanta Police Department.

About 3 a.m. on July 14, 2002, Officer Bunn and his partner, Officer Terry Mulkey, were in an unmarked police vehicle patrolling “Buckhead,” a tough nightclub area of Atlanta that routinely experiences burglaries, car thefts, break-ins, shootings, brawls, and riotous drunken behavior. Suddenly they heard the breaking of a car window and a vehicle alarm sounding.

Suspecting a vehicle theft, they turned on the blue police flashing lights on the windshield and rear and exited the cruiser yelling “Police, Police! Stop!” Both officers were wearing pullover shirts with the words “Atlanta Police” on the front and back, and chains around their necks that secured their Atlanta police badges.

A black male (later identified as Jamal Smith) jumped out of the broken window of a Buick SUV and ran to a Chevy Tahoe, where he got in the back seat. The officers were about 25 feet in front of the Tahoe and were approaching it when the driver, Corey Ward, hit the gas and accelerated in reverse, screeching the tires, and coming to an abrupt stop. As the officers walked toward the stopped car, Ward suddenly punched the gas pedal and began speeding straight at the policemen. The officers retreated to the front of their cruiser, but the Tahoe driver seemed determined to run them down!

Officer Mulkey was able to jump out of the way, but Officer Bunn was trapped and about to be run down by the Tahoe. Officer Bunn jumped to his right, firing his service revolver twice at the Tahoe. The Chevy Tahoe hit Officer Bunn, pinning his leg between the two vehicles and injuring his knee. One of the shots fired hit Corey Ward, who died of a single bullet wound to his head.

The investigation of the incident determined that the police officers believed their lives were in danger. Two of the passengers in the Tahoe said that they and Corey Ward were fully aware that they were encountering the police.

A study using the Vetroniz Crash Data Retrieval system that can recover data from airbags in a severe crash showed that the Tahoe was traveling at 26 miles per hour five seconds before the crash and at 14 miles per hour one second before it hit Officer Bunn and the police cruiser. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation determined that Officer Bunn was five feet or less from the Tahoe when he fired his revolver.

Corey Ward had two ounces of cocaine in his pocket. A large knife and seven bags of marijuana were discovered in the Tahoe, along with two stolen cell phones.

Following the incident, Officer Bunn, a former Marine, was called for duty in Iraq by his National Guard unit and served there for one year, returning in January 2004. He resigned from the Atlanta P.D. in July 2004, taking a position with a firm that provides security for the Department of State personnel in Iraq.

On December 9, 2005, Ray Bunn was indicted by a Fulton County Grand Jury, charged with murder and felony murder — both capital offenses in Georgia — plus aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and violation of oath. The indictment was the result of intense pressure from the black community on Paul Howard, the District Attorney. No trial date has been set.

LELDF is helping Ray Bunn with legal counsel and legal and expert witness fees to fight this unjust indictment.

Simply amazing!!!!

I guess this means that in Atlanta you are allowed to attempt to kill a police officer as long as you are black.

It is against all logical reasoning that they put the police officer on trial for doing his job of Protect and Serve.

Paul Howard is a yellow-bellied D.A. for Atlanta/Fulton County and hates white folks, especially white cops. He is a disgrace and should be run out of town on a rail. This guy is poison with a capital P !

Is this the same Paul Howard who sees no problem with putting a short elderly lady in charge of Brian Nichols, just before his courthouse shooting rampage?

” in an unmarked police vehicle patrolling “Buckhead,” a tough nightclub area of Atlanta that routinely experiences burglaries, car thefts, break-ins, shootings, brawls, and riotous drunken behavior.”

If you live in ‘Atlanta’, you know that one night each week is when Buckhead is a ‘bad’ part of town to party in ... only one night a week (barring certain sports events, parties etc.) is an at-risk night. Six nights you’re OK.

Sunday night is the ‘bad’ night. July 14, 2002 was a Sunday night. [not sure if this happened early Monday AM of early Sunday AM]

Hmmm, I wouldn't think that you'd need to be Keanu Reeves ala The Matrix to get out of the way of a car going at the break neck speed of 14 MPH.

Not to take anything away from the officer's plight... I keep visualizing the image of the security guard facing down Austin Powers' steam roller...

Why don’t you figure out how many feet per second that is when you’re standing only 5 feet away. That’s about 205 ft per second. Your’e gonna need matrix reloaded speed.

If this story is true as it is written in this article then it sounds like the policeman's being Nifonged by this Howard cat.

Can anyone tell the skin color of either of these two individuals.

Could this be another example of those so called non racists blacks having an agenda of political lynchings against all white folks whether true or not.

Things are getting out of hand quickly when the rule of law is just a marker to be aimed for and not actually adhered to by elected representatives in government.

this right here is the another example of those who serve and protect for pennies on the dime and get thrown under the microscope because someone can use the leverage card. it makes me sick. we barely make enough to survive and we take the job to help others. to serve and protect. to be the person so many others don't want to be and have the responsibility for. if this is the way we fight crime then whats the point of having police? its not worth losing your life to save another if you are going to rot in jail because you defended yourself to see tomorrow. God bless this man for his service to ATL and the USA!!!! i don't see how anyone could have said they’d done different!!!

14 miles per hour = 20.5 feet per second. Still not enough time if the car’s five feet away, but I suppose they’re saying he could have moved before that point.

anytime you would like to get out there and hit the streets and defend the rights of others and help those in need, you do. maybe you just one of those back seat drivers huh? swoop in to down the ones that protect you and come to your aid when you need them! its wrong that this has come to this. one who serve his city and our country so idiots like you can bash him! wake up people. this ain't the garden of eden. when you got to wear a vest, gun, asp, pepper spray and some cuffs, it ain't your normal 9 to 5 job. walk in the shoes of and officer and feel and see what they do and then pass judgment. you can only imagine a small part of the risks involved. God bless our soldiers who protect us on our soil and foreign!!

“maybe you just one of those back seat drivers huh?”

In case you didn’t notice, I am on the side of the officer who is being charged by some sorry prosecutor. I know what all of you out there defending us do - a really super job. How do I know that? My son is one of you, a man who wears a badge proudly, who works with the community, who helps keep the peace and protect the rest of us. Before that he wore the uniform of the US Marines and served from the Far East to the Middle East.

I know too about prosecutors like the one there in Atlanta who, for whatever reason, probably for votes and who knows what else, is out to persecute this officer. It is no different than what Nifong tried to do to the LaCross players in the Carolinas. I see something similar happening to some officers closer to home here.

I suggest next time you read the replies and the links in the thread before blasting away.
