Police and Protesters Square Off at Leimert Park (Immigration-Ted Hayes Had Permit, Still Arrested)
KTLA ^ | June 23, 2007

Posted on 06/23/2007 6:11:47 PM PDT by bd476

A line of Los Angeles Police officers on Crenshaw Boulevard stood between a coalition of Minutemen and black activists, and a larger group of pro-immigrant marchers in Leimert Park today.

Officers, some in riot gear, some in shorts and on bicycles, lined the usually-busy boulevard street. At 3:50 p.m., LAPD officials declared the anti- immigrant rally to be an illegal assemble, as its parade permit had expired, and a short time later arrested activist anti-immigration activist Ted Hayes.

LAPD brass earlier had declared a tactical alert to muster enough officers to keep the two sides apart. And police, mindful of the May Day melee at MacArthur Park, carefully told reporters that it was setting up an observation zone at the southern side of the park.

Led by longtime homeless advocate Ted Hayes, an unusual coalition of white Minutemen activists and a small number of blacks demanding reparations for slavery had planned an 11 a.m. march to Leimert Park, and daylong rally.

But a racially-mixed pro-immigrants crowd of more than 400 persons milled about Leimert Park, a triangular spot of green known as the cultural center of black Los Angeles. They carried pro-immigration-rights signs, and vowed to prevent the others from marching into the park.

Inside the park, many black residents said they were aghast at what they said was the use of their community for the anti-immigration effort.

"Being a kind of multicultural person, I realized they have an urgency to get black folk on their side, and I knew it was wrong," said Ahzul Jimenez, 24, of Los Angeles.

Another pro-immigration protestor in the park, Terrance Hayes, said that as a black man he feels "everybody has a right to be here in this country."

But on the other side of the police lines, Hayes waved a banner decrying "the black American slave holocaust" and said it was a "travesty" that his group could not exercise its parade permit to rally in the park.

"As of this day, the city of Los Angeles in a state of chaos," Hayes said. He vowed to be arrested to protect his rights, and a few minutes after saying that was taken into custody.

Hayes had chosen the park, an area known as the cultural center of the black community of Los Angeles, for a rally he called "Choose Black America - Not Amnesty - Not Illegal Immigration."

Lauren Price, a 74-year-old Long Beach resident who had arrived with the Minutemen, carried an American flag, anti-immigration sign, and scoffed at those who said residents should all get along.

"We all can't get along because they are trying to take everything from us," she said.

Hayes has a parade permit, approved by the Police Commission, to use the park. But a large group of pro-immigration persons heard about the rally, and are counterprotesting by blocking access to the small triangle of green space.

Although the news reporter estimated more than 500 people were protesting, LAPD spokeswoman Mary Grady said police count 150 on each side.

News media are being told to report to an intersection at the south corner of the park "should the event be declared to be an unlawful assembly," said Grady.

A citywide tactical alert was called at about 1:30 p.m., meaning officers completing their shifts are being kept on overtime in case additional officers are needed.

Without going into details, the rallies may be "a little sideways," said police spokesperson Norma Eisenman. Hayes started his rally at 11 a.m. and expected to conclude it at 5 p.m., Eisenman said.

"The rallies at this point got to be a partly-separated stalemate," Grady said, "and no one is able to go into the park."

Leftists against leftists. I’ve already said that blacks will be among those hurt worst by an immigration amnesty bill.

I hadn’t thought of the homeless, but it stands to reason that the poor, the homeless, welfare recipients, and those in need of healthcare will be hurt when a new class of designated victims overwhelms the system.

I heard about this on KFI’s news!

Ted Hayes is the BEST!!! I met him years ago when he led a Pro-Bush March at the LA Marathon. Classy Patriot, for sure!!!

Thank you, Ted Hayes for STANDING UP for Veterans and Americans.

PLEASE Let us know, bd476, if you hear anything, or what we can do to support Hayes at this time!

Thanks Joy Angela, was just going to ping you.

This is sickening because Ted Hayes had a permit and from the news reports I've heard so far, it sounds as if the police took directions from the other side.

It does sound as if Ted Hayes and the participants in his rally and march were denied their rights, by the police and the pro-illegal mob .

Ted Hayes needs to sue the city.

Since when does a mob of illegal alien supporters get to deny the civil rights of citizens and legal residents?

This is disgusting.

Ted Hayes needs to sue the city.

"As of this day, the city of Los Angeles in a state of chaos," Hayes said.

Hayes knows more about Los Angeles then the mayor and police chief combined. And a group of whites and blacks is NOT a mixed-race group ? So apparently a black that takes a position against the MSM/DC Elite, is no longer considered to be a black ?

Doesnt this smack of communist tactics?

The illegal aliens have more rights than American citizens and the AMNESTY Bill has not been passed yet...

Do they think it will and are acting as though it has already?

This is how it will be and worse...

The illegal aliens are a protected and preferred class of people...

Civil rights violation by the pro-illegal mob - with the participation of the LAPD, it appears.

Yes, it really is odd.

The money quote from Hayes was when he basically stated his civil rights were being violated by foreign nationals. The invasion has just been clearly defined. Bush and the amnesty pimps need to decide whether they are with us or whether they are with the foreign nationals.

KABC Channel 7

L.A. Police Called to Separate Demonstrators

At Least Five Arrested, Including Activist Ted Hayes

LOS ANGELES, June 23, 2007 (KABC-TV) - There was a noisy confrontation at Leimert Park in Los Angeles Saturday.

Activist Ted Hayes organized the initial demonstration, and his group was met by angry counter-protesters.

The line was divisively drawn down Crenshaw Boulevard. On the west side of the street stood Ted Hayes, a longtime homeless advocate, and those who are opposing immigration rights. On the east side of the street there was a large coalition of people that are anti-Ted Hayes saying they are in support of immigration rights.

There was an estimated 500 or 600 people that gathered on the street outside of Leimert Park. Mr. Hayes had a permit that allowed him to march down Crenshaw Boulevard and then into Leimert Park for a rally. That rally was to be for homeless rights and it was very anti-immigration oriented.

When people heard of Hayes' march, a counter protest was planned. A number of people showed up from various coalitions, of all different races. They were determined not to let Mr. Hayes and his group into Leimert Park. When police, supervising the march, saw what was transpiring they had to weigh all the issues. Police say the main concern was public safety.

Deputy Chief Mike Hillman, Los Angeles Police Department: "In the balancing act that we got into here was the issue of allowing access to the park. Mr. Hayes' group had a permit to go into the park. The park was occupied by literally children between 5 and 12 years of age and their parents, plus about 250 to 300 of the individuals that were community members that obviously took issue with Mr. Hayes being here in their community. So they blocked access to the park."

It was made very clear to those who were behind Mr. Hayes and members of the Minutemen that those who didn't want to leave would be arrested.

Ted Hayes, Activist: "I went to the trouble to get the permit to have this park right here, so that we can express our first amendment rights to talk about how our civil rights are being hijacked by citizens from foreign countries illegally within our country."

Mr. Hayes and four other individuals were arrested. According to the LAPD, it was Mr. Hayes' choice to be arrested and he wanted to make a stand.

There were no reports of injuries to any LAPD officers or bystanders that gathered for both of the protests.

Yes exactly I said my first odd comment and should have added /s

I’m appalled and shocked at the atitude of the people that Ted may have helped...and is still trying to help...

Ted is a hero and a great American..That a man of integrity and guts like him should be treated so is shameful..

and they wonder why we are speaking up and objecting to giving AMNESTY to 25,000 000 illegal aliens who dont care about our country or our people. or our rights under the COTUS..

Ted Hayes is not a leftist.

He is one of the good guys.

Ditto that!

Here is a SHORT EXCERPT from www.opinionjournal.com:

CROSS COUNTRY

Rasta Republican
Meet Los Angeles's Ted Hayes. He's black, dreadlocked--and belongs to the GOP.

BY JILL STEWART
Thursday, April 28, 2005 12:01 a.m.

LOS ANGELES--Condoleezza Rice and Ward Connerly once epitomized black Republicans in California. But their ilk now also includes Ted Hayes, a social activist and inner-city coach whose billowing robes and dreadlocks don't exactly conjure up an image of the GOP.

More blacks than ever support vouchers and faith-based initiatives, and side with President Bush on gay marriage. Mr. Hayes recently made the transition himself, ending a long journey for this former leftist who founded Dome Village, an outcropping of pod-like homeless shelters along the freeway in downtown Los Angeles.

There are other prominent black Republicans in California, of course, such as syndicated radio host Larry Elder and community relations expert Joe Hicks. But even among these unusual thinkers, Mr. Hayes stands out. He's an intense critic of L.A.'s powerful "black old guard"--Democratic politicians, charity bosses and inner-city preachers who, for a generation, have responded to poverty and illiteracy by demanding government programs and blaming white racism.

Not surprisingly, plenty of people wish pesky black Republicans like Mr. Hayes would just slink away. He has skewered L.A.'s entrenched black leaders as "Negro officials," and he has the street cred to get away with it. As L.A. endured another crisis between black leaders and cops recently, he refused to denounce police for shooting dead a 13-year-old, Devin Brown, after a car chase. Instead, Mr. Hayes's press release faulted black church leaders who, despite their great power, rarely point to the lack of parental responsibility...
