Elizabeth Edwards received thunderous applause during a speech in San Francisco as part of Sundays Gay Pride celebration.
Elizabeth Edwards, wife of 2008 presidential candidate former U.S. Sen. John Edwards, advocated her husbands democratic campaign and addressed issues pertaining to poverty, the U.S. involvement in the Iraq war and lesbian and gay rights, among other topics.
As members of the audience held up John Edwards campaign posters, Elizabeth Edwards conveyed her and her husbands beliefs regarding one of the most important issues to many San Franciscans: the rights of gay and lesbian American citizens.
Everyone should have the same rights and benefits, Elizabeth Edwards said. Same-sex couples should receive the same treatment (as straight couples).
On the subject of poverty in America, Elizabeth Edwards said that she believed Congress had masked the issue in unjustifiable silence. 37 million people (in America) live in poverty, and 15 million in deep poverty, she said.
Elizabeth Edwards, who has been fighting breast cancer since 2004, also declared that the countrys healthcare is in shambles.
In addition, Elizabeth Edwards said she and John Edwards both support stem cell research, deeming it an important part of the countrys progress toward curing many medical problems.
We need a government driven by science and compassion, not ideology, Elizabeth Edwards said. Its time to stand up. Its time to fight, she said at the end of her speech.
Elizabeth Edwards speech took place at the annual Alice B. Toklas Pride Breakfast, hosted by the Alice B. Toklas Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Democratic Club, at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel at 9 a.m.
San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and California Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, were among the opening speakers at the event.
Referring to Saturday and Sundays Gay Pride celebration, Newsom shared his belief that the magic of San Francisco stems from the non-judgmental nature of the city.
Today is an affirmation of whats good, and whats right, Newsom said.
Clad in leather pants that he jokingly referred to at one point during his short speech, Leno used his time at the podium to thank the audience for their support.
Newsom thinks he knows right from wrong, hahaha.
Do they serve brownies at that breakfast? I’d go once just to try them if they do.
Fudge.
They only serve fudge.
Geez, I'm getting too old for this nonsense.
"Science and compassion"? Gimme a break here, will ya?

“We need a government driven by science and compassion, not ideology,
Hahahaha Junk Science, and compassion for perverts who want to push their way into every childs classroom.
Twenty years ago, that would have been the punchline of a joke.
(For those of you who don't know, Alice Toklas is perhaps best known, other than as Gertrude Stein's other half, for popularizing cannabis as an ingredient in baked sweets.)
Cal, have you seen the pics of this years homfest week in Boston?? Talk about porn, and exposing kids to it, this year is the worst yet!
Not that anyone knows of. LOL but then we haven’t claimed he is, he is just a gay apologist atty for them.
“Today is an affirmation of whats good, and whats right, Newsom said.”
Amazing that this man thinks he can tell me and my family what is “good” and “right”. What an arrogant ass.
Stein and Toklas
Not just ugly bitter perverts-- neither had much talent either.
Bet they had sausage.
“Elizabeth Edwards speech took place at the annual Alice B. Toklas Pride Breakfast, hosted by the Alice B. Toklas Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Democratic Club . . .”
Welcome to today’s Democratic Party.
I saw a number of LBGT ‘educational’ films at YouTube. Disgusting.
funny we never heard those views from them when he ran for the senate in North Carolina
"Everyone should have a Double Classic Burger with Cheese and a large Frosty. Straight white people who live in 28,000 square foot mansions and ride around in private jets should not be the only people with clogged arteries and hypertension."
I guess she’s “comfortable around those people” unlike her husband.
How can that be? Lyndon Johnson declared war on poverty, creating the biggest entitlement program known to man, making the USA "The Great Society."
We all know the intended results of the War on Poverty was peace with poverty.
Poverty is the chain on people's neck that the Democrats yank every election cycle. If poverty didn't exist, the Left would re-invent it.
####Referring to Saturday and Sundays Gay Pride celebration, Newsom shared his belief that the magic of San Francisco stems from the non-judgmental nature of the city.####
I guess San Francisco would be a hell-hole otherwise. The city’s magic has nothing to do with the Golden Gate Bridge, the scenic locale overlooking the bay & the Pacific Ocean, Lombard Street, the Embarcadero, Chinatown, Fisherman’s Wharf, Ghirardelli Square, the hill-climbing cable cars, or Mission Dolores. Those things are nothing. All that matters is that the place is “non-judgmental”. By that standard, Camden, NJ or Gary, IN could become “magic” just by opening a few bathhouses.
####Today is an affirmation of whats good, and whats right, Newsom said.####
Um, aren’t you being judgmental there, Newsom?
You know what they say -— you are known by the company you keep. I firmly believe that.
Excellent post.
What amazes me about the Edwards family is how a wholesome looking family can be such moonbats.

Us older folks remember Alice B. Toklas as having something to do with one of Peter Sellers's less than stellar performances.
Why would anyone be proud of committing sodomy???????????????? HHmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
Just had a missionary friend return last week from Zimbabwe.
Those fools haven't a clue what deep poverty really means. The poorest American lives better (and longer) than 99% of the citizens of Zimbabwe.
I well remember LBJ's War on Poverty speech. Being young and idealistic at the time I thought poverty was the shortage of money and jobs. I now know know poverty results from the shortage of knowledge and desire.
This country offers half of the equation to everybody. It is up to the individual to provide the other half. Why is that a national issue?
I think he is and I think the cancer has gone to her brain, if she has one.
NOT a good comment.

Anyone else see a contradiction here?
Yeah,a lot of the audience have “hot” buns alright, and we know why !!!
One of the “magic attractions” of S.F. that you left out is that it is the International home of the Pile Drivers Union.
Mahalo
San Francisco needs to be neutron-bombed. Keep the city; save the buildings. Lose the inhabitants.
Unreal how low this stupid city has sunk. I have been there countless times and am constantly amazed at the filth.....amidst such beautiful scenery.
Did any part of Elizabeth’s speech include the words, “As the wife of an obviously gay man,...”?
He is not gay. He's a faggot.
Fudge.
They only serve fudge.
Well packed.
At least Elizabeth knows what it is like to be in a same-sex marriage.
Oh yeah, that’s right.
So John Edwards is going to get the “I feel pretty” vote. No surprise there.
Aw, come on...doncha’ just admire the brilliant (gack!) line, “A rose is a rose is a rose...
is a rose
is a rose
blah blah blah blah...
That reminds me...how did we let ‘em steal our rainbows?
Put down that sausage.
You don’t know where it’s been.
Same way they stole everything else they use, including our language! Heck nothing is beneath them, they even steal the civil rights movement!
Yeah, be proud...stand by your ‘girly’ man...
and “RACism”! oy
I love you Alice B. Toklas Your always on my mind, I love you Alice B. Toklas And so does Gertrude Stein
