'Most severely wounded' soldier endures: blind, quadriplegic, struggling to breathe
International Herald Tribune ^ | 6/23/07

TAMPA, Florida: He lies flat, unseeing eyes fixed on the ceiling, tubes and machines feeding him, breathing for him, keeping him alive. He cannot walk or talk, but he can grimace and cry. And he is fully aware of what has happened to him.

Four years ago almost to this day, Joseph Briseno Jr. was shot in the back of the head at point-blank range in a Baghdad marketplace. His spinal cord was shattered, and cardiac arrests stole his vision and damaged his brain.

The 24-year-old is one of the most severely injured soldiers — some think the most injured soldier — to survive.

"All our savings, all our money, was just emptied ... the 401(k)s, everything," said Joseph Briseno, who took a new job a year and a half ago to make ends meet.

How much are we spending on pork projects this year?

No, he' home, believe it or not.

"If you asked me this from the very beginning, if we can handle it, I wouldn't lie to you. I would say no, that there is no way. There's no way that we're going to learn all these things. But my wife and I, we learned everything. We are the respiratory technician, we are the physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists ... his wound care nurse," Joseph Briseno said.

Shameful. Absolutely shameful.

"I am disgusted by our government at every level"

I share in your disgust .

How can we spend millions/billions on pork projects, the Pali's, illegals in the streets- waving their flag, while extending the middle finger of ingratitude to our country, and I'll add: congress-member's bloated salaries ,and cushy retirement/medical benefits, when fallen American heroes and their families need anything, ANYTHING at all?

I know, jan. I don’t know how some of the Congress critters, and some of those heading and working in gov’t agencies, look at themselves in the mirror. The misappropriation of funds, the graft, etc., in gov’t is beyond sickening and shameful, and sinful. If they worked as hard at handling the money properly as they do at collecting it....

” “...Johnny Got His Gun”. It made a resurgance towards the end of
the Vietnam War with the anti-war crowd. “

It was a good book.
And yes, I did read it as a teenager during the wind-down of the
Vietnam War.

Interesting sidebar (linked below) details the good writer,
self-appointed snitch (on the people who wanted his book during WWII)
and Communist that wrote the book:

This is nothing short of a disgrace. Billions of dollars of earmarks for pet projects of hundreds of congress critters, and this poor family not only has to suffer through the horrible injuries their son received AND lose their life’s savings.

Disgusted doesn’t come even near to expressing my reaction but it’s the only word I can think of right now.

As you said "I don't know what we can do about this, but, something has to be done".

I posted on another thread the opinion of my mother of today's politicians: She said they are awful- The worst group of people in office that we have ever had-selfish, greedy, and corrupt. She doesn't know what can be done either.

But you know, as bad as they are we have only ourselves to blame. There’s not a one of them that couldn’t be sent packing by simply being voted out of office. Truth is, we are selfish and we vote for the person who seems to be making us the best offer.

The answer is term limits, imposed by the voters not by law.

There is a lot wrong with the current system and most of the individual ills seem to reinforce each other.

With over half the population getting some sort of benefit from government it’s going to be hard to turn the bastards out, but that’s the answer. And it’s got to start at the primary level where the voters have the chance to change representation but keep the party affiliation.

The answer is so simple, and so close at hand. I think maybe a few more of the entrenched politicos will fall this next go ‘round.

The solution will be to find a way to finance and support those who are qualified and would be willing to take on the incumbent.

Some of my ideas:

Congress people should not get retirement benefits paid for by the tax payers. Let them take money from their own bloated pay checks and put it into a retirement account.

Isn't a politician supposed to be "serving" the people? And isn't it supposed to be a temporary thing?-Not a lifetime career? They have way, way, too many perks.

Any pay raise they get should have to be approved by the voters first.

Most of all they should NEVER EVER be able to exempt themselves from legislation.

Their medical and dental benefits should be temporary-Only for while they serve in office, and the cost needs to be deducted from their pay, just like the the rest of us.

They should not be able to benefit personally while they are serving as a representative. Just a few thoughts(not that the problem will ever be fixed)

These egotistical, elitist politicians are far more annoying than the spoiled rotten Hollywood crowd. At least the "stars" earn their own money.

The idiots in Washington are nothing more than a bunch of glorified Welfare Queens living off the people's money and screaming for more-even worse- They do this while looking down their noses at us- who pay their overblown salaries and outrageous benefits.

“I honestly don’t know what to ask for him in prayer, except a swift and merciful death.”

It’s been 4 years. There is nothing swift nor merciful about this. I pray his suffering does come to an end however and the sooner the better.

What frosts my soft parts is that we are sending $70 million dollars to one of the sides in the Palestinian ‘dispute’ to buy arms to ‘stabilize’ the situation. How in God’s name, literally, can we send one damned dime to these people when fallen American heroes and their families need anything, ANYTHING at all?

I am disgusted by our government at every level. I don’t know how we’re going to do it, but it’s time to give this government, starting with those traitors at the State Dept. and CIA, an enema.

WELL SAID.

Some time back there was a story about a soldier being shot in the face by a terrorist in Iraq. The round entered at the bottom of his nostril and struck a tooth. Somehow the bullet struck the top of a tooth and stopped, but the tooth was shot from his mouth (think croquette).

He thought the terrorists gun misfired and immediately took him prisoner. Later while under interrogation, the terrorist admitted to crapping himself because he shot this American Soldier in the face at point blank range and the Soldier not only survive, but took him prisoner.

This story was NOT picked up by the MSM.
