Closing arguments are scheduled to be made today in the trial of an ex-lawman charged with wounding a drunken off-duty military policeman after a car chase and videotaped confrontation in Chino.

When the arguments end, the case will be given to the jury for verdict deliberations.

Former San Bernardino County sheriff's Deputy Ivory Webb Jr. could be imprisoned for nearly 20 years if convicted, as charged, of attempted voluntary manslaughter and other firearms-related offenses.

Air Force military policeman Elio Carrion was wounded three times during the January 2006 shooting. The prosecution claims Webb was emotionally out-of-control and fired in panic as Carrion was complying with two orders to "get up." The defense claims that Carrion reached into his jacket -- as if to draw a gun -- and appeared to lunge toward the officer as he was standing up.

If I remember correctly, there was a video tape of this incident...I believe the former deputy's case is weak.

I don't recall ever hearing any prior suggestion that Amn. Carrion was drunken at the time.

Article also neglects to mention that he was the passenger in the car, not the driver.

Twenty years is not enough.

At the 54-55 second mark on the tape, the officer clearly tells the suspect at least twice to get up.

Cops don’t do so well in prison, and he will deserve it all.

And then the suspect said "I'm getting up", in compliance with the officer's directive, and then the officer shot him.

Several times.

It's obvious you're not familiar with the case.

This case was posted here back when it happened? If you would like to look them up and read them. That still doesn't answer what you mean?

The first backup officer to arrive that night, Chino police Detective Brian Cauble, testified Thursday he came upon the scene to find the deputy, Ivory J. Webb Jr., standing above a wounded Elio Carrion with his gun drawn.

Cauble said he immediately asked Webb what was going on.

"He told me the subject had tried to attack him," Cauble said.

Richard Swigart, a San Bernardino County sheriff's sergeant who also went to the scene, testified Webb told him a similar story.

"He said the guy lunged at him and he shot three times," Swigart testified.

Webb's statements from that night were the central issue Thursday as his trial continued in San Bernardino Superior Court.

Prosecutors contend the statements are contradicted by a videotape of the shooting that appears to show Webb shoot Carrion just after ordering him to get up.

They also claim that after the video of the shooting surfaced, Webb changed his story to say he shot Carrion because he believed Carrion reached into his jacket for a weapon.
