It’s not complicated:

Bush demands amnesty bill for illegals.

Republicans get mad.

Republicans get tired of supporting Bush.

We lose in Iraq.

I consider the attacks on Bush to be shortsighted. His ability to promote a firm and aggressive anti-terror policy abroad is linked tightly to the perceived support he receives from the American people. In-fighting over his immigration policies has weakened his credibility in the War On Terror. I see cries for his impeachment on this web site with regularity these days, along with postings calling him a traitor, a New World Order proponent, a member of the Global Society conspiracy, etc.

He brought it upon himself. It is of his own doing. Why did he revive this contentious issue and jeopardize the conduct and support of the WOT? He can't be that politically tone deaf not to realize the damage that is being done to the GOP. It must be intentional. The WH has been name calling itself along with its Rep supporters, e.g., bigots, nativists, xenophobes, scaremongers....

Now, I may not agree with all his policies, but I beg to differ with all the prophets predicting the end of our nation if he gets his way with immigration.

Differ you might, but we don't have to agree with you. I have read both versions of the bill, a painstaking expeperience. I have also had professional and personal experience with the immigration process. This bill is an unmitigated disaster and will be a major turning point in this nation's history. Believe it or not.

still think that if he doesn’t get his way in foreign policy, we’re screwed... and without a solid backing by the American people, or at least the conservative and moderate components, the world will ignore him, Congress will ignore him, and Republicans will be blamed, and we’ll have another 8 years of horrific liberal rule that will surely promise to kill more people and encourage global tyrants and terrorists world wide.

Shouldn't Bush be the one making that political calculation? He is the one blowing off his most loyal constituency.

Sorry, I just don’t think Bush is as bad as most of you seem to think these days. I don’t think he can possibly screw up immigration any more than it already is, and as long as he’s fighting the War on Terror, I’d give him whatever perception of support he needs to do a bang up job on that.

You obviously don't understand the immigration issue. In the long term, this issue is more of a threat to this country than the WOT. And the two are related. Why hasn't Bush secured the border [including a system to monitor, track, and deport visa overstays] since 9/11? It is a national security issue. How can we take him seriously on the WOT when he allows terrorists to cross into the US thru the Mexican border?

I wish the Right would shut up and soldier sometimes. Sometimes we have to put up with stuff we don’t like to get to where we’re going, and if we were smarter - maybe we’d be able to stop the liberals from stealing yet another march on us. The liberal media is playing you all with stories intended to incite your delicate sensibilities, and you all are falling for it hook line and sinker. It is no surprise that prior to the 2006 election the border issue took front and center on the news. It upset conservatives to the point where we lost cohesion.

This issue transcends partisan politics. It is a matter of national survival. Samuel Huntington wrote, "The persistent inflow of Hispanic immigrants threatens to divide the United States into two peoples, two cultures, and two languages. Unlike past immigrant groups, Mexicans and other Latinos have not assimilated into mainstream U.S. culture, forming instead their own political and linguistic enclaves—from Los Angeles to Miami—and rejecting the Anglo-Protestant values that built the American dream. The United States ignores this challenge at its peril. "

"Contemporary Mexican and, more broadly, Latin American immigration is without precedent in U.S. history. The experience and lessons of past immigration have little relevance to understanding its dynamics and consequences. Mexican immigration differs from past immigration and most other contemporary immigration due to a combination of six factors: contiguity, scale, illegality, regional concentration, persistence, and historical presence."

The demographics of this invasion of illegal aliens are mind-boggling. For starters, we really don't know how may are even here. How anyone can make good public policy without reliable data is beyond my comprehension. Even without this bill, the Bureau of the Census projects the population of the US to grow by 62 million in the next 23 years, i.e., by 2030, to 364 million. This is the equivalent of adding the current population of the UK. And by 2050, the projection is 420 million. If the Senate bill passes, these projections will be grossly understated.

Either we get back to basics and support our elected President to the hilt, while looking for someone more conservative to follow after him, or we can just continue as we are and start planning on how to turn the next Liberal Democrat’s Presidency into a lucrative career dissing liberalism, and dreaming about the good old days when Bush was pushing for reforms that, while unpalatable, weren’t quite as radical as what the Democrats have planned.

Our support got him elected him twice. What are his obligations to us?

Then again... Who am I to complain? Why not just impeach Bush over immigration? Doesn’t matter how he gets impeached or pilloried... Just seeing “Bush Loses Support In U.S.” must make Osama Bin Laden smile.

You reap what you sow, The entire tenure of your remarks have been related to emotion. No facts or substance. In my post #38, I asked you a number of questions, which you haven't addressed or answered. You are not a serious person.

Equating support for bin Ladin with contempt for W & the Senateers is ridiculous. If you want to defend this country, you do not stymie LE in apprehending & deporting illegal immigrants. If we are really facing such a threat, how can you justify letting unknown people run willy-nilly all over the country (whilst subjecting known citizens to the indignities of the ‘Patriot Act’) - unless some have other goals in mind.

I am sorry, your position has too many holes in it to be tenable. I wish you were correct in your assessment, but everything goes against it. There is a real threat out there, and concurrent with that we are playing footsie with an arbitrary North American Union (or whatever is being concocted), all the while denying the real threat.

Can I have a “religion of peace”?

Testify!

I think George was a better choice than moonbat Gore or Mr. Teresa Kerry, but that does not confer upon him brilliance. It was a lackluster field, and he was the lesser of two (three) evils. Now we have to deal with his dreams of the US of Mexico. NO THANK YOU.

Of all the politicoes I have voted for in 30 years of not missing one election, I have never felt more betrayed than by this man.

This is not to be misconstrued as supporting the left, in fact far from it. This is a rejection of Jorge’s defection to the left, for what reasons I cannot fathom.

GWB is doing anything but defending this country. A-Q runs about 5-7 years between major attacks, that is their history. Iraq may well be a distraction, but make no mistake, they are coming here, and when they do, there will be one clear reason: we did not secure our borders when we had the chance. ALL who support this amnesty abomination will share in the guilt.

I think I am ready to join them

Likewise. Our president has no clue what he is doing and while he is spending all his time and what little political capital he has left forcing amnesty down our throats, good men are dying in iraq because of his failure to put forth , explain and support any kind of coherent plan with a fraction of the effort he has made on his stupid amnesty plan

we have to put all of our energy into illegal immigration. these idiots have to be lead by the hand when it comes to understanding what a sovereign nation is.

The GOP has no balls, like much of the American politicians.

The US establishment is made of gays, that’s WHY the war is so hard to win.

The war is lost. Al-Q and the Demos have won with the conservative base help. If you dont like this immigration bill wait till the next one comes around with the large majority of demo\liberals in congress able to pass anything and a demo president ready to sign it.

The conservative base sounds a lot like the liberals I’ve been reading for the last 6 years.

Fit your women for burkas? Please...The Soviet Union had how many nukes pointed at us and did we turn into a communist country? The more time, money, and resources we spend on a failing policy in Iraq the less secure we’ll become by the year... and by the way, if we do continue on this path, we are going to wake up with China suddenly having more power in the world than we do... I doubt we’ll be crying about “Islamo-Fascism” then.
