A Washington state man who always loved to dig in the dirt unearths a petrified forest, covered by lava 15 million years ago while still upright.

Yakima, Wash. — Clyde Friend's life changed the moment his bulldozer hit the first tree on a hot summer afternoon in 2002 as he leveled a hill behind his workshop. Chips flew everywhere, a small explosion of brown and white shards.

He hopped off the dozer to investigate. There, embedded in the hill, was a mostly intact fossilized tree trunk standing upright in solid rock. "Well, that's different," he recalls thinking.

A heavy-machine operator for most of his working life, Friend was used to finding bits of petrified wood now and then. He'd never bumped into anything like this.

For the next several days, in the privacy of his remote 10-acre lot, Friend dug up the rest of his find by chipping away the surrounding rock. It turned out to be a petrified hickory tree, 18 feet tall and as big around as a cantaloupe.

He extracted it in pieces and put it in storage, thinking it could be worth something someday. Then he went back to leveling the hill — until he hit the second tree. It was the same height as the first, but thicker. The third tree was identical, but the fourth took his breath away: 20 inches in diameter.

What is so incredible about that?

After Mount Saint Helens erupted in Washington State, there was little "lava" as is seen in Hawaiian volcanic eruptions.

However, tens of thousands of acres and the trees and the wooden buildings on them were completely or partially buried by volcanic ash and silt.

So it was with the trees in that petrified forest. The buried portions of the trees were protected by the solidified ash and silt and were preserved by petrification. The portions of the trees that were not buried rotted away 15 million years ago.

You do not find large, standing sections of tree trunks in lava deposits.

You might want to go look at the pictures of 'lava trees' in the link at post 27. Apparently trees can remain quite intact in a lava flow.

There was an age before this one. The Bible tells us that the earth is millions or billions of years old, not 6,000 as some believe. The Bible and science are compatible on this point.

Gen.1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2.And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.

This didn't state when that was, just in the beginning. God destroyed that earth age because of Satan's rebellion and started again with our present, 2nd age.

And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. (this is when our age began)

3.And God said, "Let there be light;" and there was light.
4.And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
5. And God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

That was the first day of our age. Also factor into this that to God 1,000 years is as one day. (2Peter3:8)

If you look at the geologic record, it is very consistent with the way God has dealt with the earth during the bible records.

Alternating epocs of creation and destruction.

I don't know, I wasn't there.

There was a huge flood that destroyed the Mesopotamian civilization about 8,000 years ago. Maybe that was Noah’s flood? I think that there are things described in the Bible that we don’t understand. Did Noah’s flood happen, yes I believe it did. Do we understand all of the specifics, I’m not sure we do. The old testament uses figurative language that made sense to the people of the time but leaves us confused.

I honestly don’t know, other than I have found that as our understanding of history improves, “Bible fables” turn into historic fact.

I am a fundamentalist but not necessarily a literalist if that makes sense.

Hi, I'm very familiar with the gap theory, and I prefer to call it the crap theory.

I really don't mean to be rude about it, but I vigorously oppose it for many reasons.

God says what He means and means what He says, and the language used in Genesis is deliberately unambiguous and clear that God created the world in 6 24 hour days, and it requires major mental gymnastics to twist that into anything other than a straight forward meaning.

To try to put a gap between v1 and v2 of gen 1 seems to me to make it like God is trying to trick us or something.

When I decided to believe Gods Word for what it is and became a YEC my faith and trust in God increased much.

As for 2 Peter I believe that refers to God working for 6,000 years and will soon be taking a Sabbath for 1,000 years, also known as the millennial rule.

Just my opinion. I really don't have the desire or energy to debate any of this out, so you believe what you want and I'll do the same.
