Washington: Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and the other Democratic presidential contenders battled for black support on Thursday with attacks on the ravages of racism, promises to lift up the poor and pledges to do more for Africa.
In a debate at historically black Howard University in Washington, the eight Democrats condemned a Supreme Court decision earlier in the day barring the use of race in assigning students to public schools and said racism remained a defining challenge in the United States.
Clinton, the New York senator who leads the Democratic field in national polls for the November 2008 election and is battling Obama for crucial black support, noted HIV/Aids was a leading cause of death among young black women and questioned the country's priorities.
"If HIV/Aids were the leading cause of death of white women between the ages of 25 and 34, there would be an outraged outcry in this country," she said, prompting applause.
Obama, an Illinois senator who would be the first black president, said the Supreme Court decision on Thursday was a frontal attack on the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education case that outlawed racial segregation in public schools.
"If it hadn't been for them, I would not be standing here today," he said of the legal team that led the fight to end school segregation. "We have made enormous progress. But the progress we have made is not good enough."
If I recall correctly, it isn’t the government’s job to lift the poor out of poverty. I wouldn’t mind seeing the government encourage them to lift themselves out of it, though.

“Clinton, the New York senator who leads the Democratic field in national polls for the November 2008 election and is battling Obama for crucial black support, noted HIV/Aids was a leading cause of death among young black women and questioned the country’s priorities.
“If HIV/Aids were the leading cause of death of white women between the ages of 25 and 34, there would be an outraged outcry in this country,” she said”
From the June 2007 CDC report:
“The estimated number of HIV/AIDS in female adults or adolescents decreased from 11,941 in 2001 to 9,708 in 2005 [3].”
Now, who was president from 2001 to 2004?
“Fact check, fact check...”
According to the CDC, that is correct. Black women are 23 times more likely to be diagnosed with AIDS than white women.

According to the CDC it was the leading cause of death in 2005 among black women, 25-34.
There is no chance that Hussein is going anywhere with this, and he will endorse her bid after the primaries.
All nonsense.
If HIV/Aids were the leading cause of death of white women between the ages of 25 and 34, there would be an outraged outcry in this country, she said
There is occasionally an outcry but it is usually quickly squashed by accusations of racism.
The obvious question being: WHY?
19%/64% is 3.4 times, not 23 times...
“If HIV/Aids were the leading cause of death of white women between the ages of 25 and 34, there would be an outraged outcry in this country,” she said, prompting applause.
There’s not an outraged outcry? What have I been hearing for the last 25 years? And whose fault is it that they are getting AIDS?
You are correct (I think), but she still ain’t going to put him on the ticket. One big blue state liberal per ticket is enough.
What no Joe Biden screaming “It’s manly to wear a condom”?
What a bunch of pander bears, I simply have a hard time believing that my fellow Americans who are “D”’s cannot see just how utterly vapid these two really are, add in my little pony (J. Edwards) and we have the trifecta of superficiality..
If they just came out and said “Vote for me and I’ll give you more stolen money in the form of welfare” I would ahve some modicum of respect for these Kleptocrats....not gonna happen...
Maybe I mis-worded it in my post. Her is the excerpt from the CDC:
“The rate of AIDS diagnosis for black women (45.5/100,000 women) was approximately 23 times the rate for white women (2.0/100,000) and 4 times the rate for Hispanic women (11.2/100,000) [3].”

“The obvious question being: WHY?”
Good question. Wish I had an answer. My guess? Rampant, extreme promiscuity. Men and women.
That takes the number of blacks as a percentage of the population rather than as a percentage of the total women; makes a better sounding argument and we are both using the same site for our info.
Look to see a VP who can grab votes in the new battleground states of the SW and Midwest that Kerry lost.
Think richardson or such.
They might make him Sec of State if he is a good little boy and does what he is told, but I don’t know...
Uh, but isn’t homicide the leading cause of death for black MALES in that age group? Whitey sure is busy hurting all those black people.
I think you are right. Funny, I can remember in the 1950s I knew in East Texas. defending blacks from that charge by the racists. I do know that the blackchurch people in my home town had a constant struggle against the “Sportnin’ Lifes”. A black woman who had a bastard child got a lot of criticism from the people in “Ceder Top”. Now bastardy seems to be the norm.
Battle on...it matters not!
“I’m no way tired,” said with a southern black accent, Hillary, ought to do it, eh?
Also the tainted blood extracted from prisoners and sold to Canada....another toon taint
What I get from the data is that there must be more ‘bisexual’ men within the black community.
It’s primarily a receiving disease ie needle, anal, or vaginal. A heterosexual male has a very low risk of catching it.
If they actually focused on needles and anal sex as a big reason why it’s out there...then I’m sure they’d reduce it quite a bit. I’m suprised how few people realize this.
That is a huge factor in it’s prevalence in Africa. People want to maintain their virginity, so they use anal sex. Not a good option imo.
“A black woman who had a bastard child got a lot of criticism from the people in Ceder Top. Now bastardy seems to be the norm.”
I’m too young to have experienced it but Mona Charen covered that in the book “Do-Gooders”.
